Hi. I don't know where you are, but ACar in Mountain View (at the Palo Alto border is great. They just rent older Camrys that are perfectly good. Steve is the owner and he may be able to give you a deal on a long term rental.
I need a car for a couple of months. Is there a place I can get it cheaper than National rental chains?

Go on Priceline.com and bid a car. See what the basic car is going for and underbid it substantially. if there is a surplus of rental cars, you can get it at a much cheaper rate. Because the economy is tough and fewer folks are taking vacations to sunny California, I bet there are alot of rental cars just sitting there.
Good Luck -
you can try "____@____.com" website, they email me regularly with some really good deals-
The suggestions you have received so far are great. You might also try HotWire.com. They offer really good rates for car rentals.
Enterprise! Also check with your car insurance or if you belong to AAA, they can probably help.
I've always found the best prices at Enterprise. I go for the lower end and 90% of the time get a free upgrade to what I really want.
My boss also says that Avis is running some really good deals and it practically giving cars away since gas prices have driven rentals down.
