My last period was in the middle of june and it lasted 3 weeks I just thought maybe it was a fluke so I brushed it off and I finally got my period again after 6 weeks and so far it has lasted 3 weeks and still is going I'm not sure what to think of this it's really starting to worry me I dont like doctors but I am starting to think I might have to break down and make an appointment. Has anyone else had something like this should I really start to worry? I read it just might be a hormone inbalance since I am only 28. If anyone can help that would be great.oh and I'm really not cramping from it there is no pain really.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I started having long, irregular periods about 6 mos after the birth of my son. I thought it was just the way it was after having a baby! I wasn't having pain, until one night I thought I was having kidney stones. A visit to the doctor, complete with a CAT scan and MRI, showed a huge, highly suspicious-looking mass on one of my ovaries. The doctor and oncologist suspected ovarian cancer and scheduled surgery. I was literally scared out of my mind. As it turns out, the mass turned out (thankfully) to be a benign, hemorrhagic cyst that resolved on its own over time- no surgery needed. As the cyst resolved, so did the irregularity of my cycle. I am not trying to scare you, but the lesson I learned from this is DO NOT put off seeing the doctor if you are having problems and are concerned! It is almost always nothing to be worried about, but let your doctor put your mind at ease. With small children to take care of, you HAVE to take your health seriously. Best of luck to you!

A friend of mine started have the same problem and it turned out she had fibroid cysts. She let it go for so long that the periods got really heavy and really painful for like three weeks at a time! It was crazy. I agree with everyone else, you want to go to the doctor and have it checked out. It really could just be your pill perscription if you are on a pill but it could be more serious. Good Luck! Please let us know what happens!

Yes, go to the doctor. Don't let them tell you that everything's fine. This is not normal. It may be a fluke and may go away, but get it checked out. I always find that my symptoms go away as soon as I schedule myself an appointment.

I think that you really need to see a doctor, you shouldn't be playing with your health you have 2 boys and a husband, I'm not a doctor and I haven't been in that kind of situation, but I do encourage you to make an appointment if you feel like you need to, you are the only one that knows your body and if you think that there's something wrong you should check it.

My advice is CALL your doctor. Even if it's nothing, who wants periods that last for weeks?!!! I had problems with my periods and had to go on birth control to regulate them; mine was just really irregular periods. Yours could be too, but get it checked just to be safe.

I'll be 28 in December and I have the same problem. I was diagnosed with PCOS and it took me 2 years to get pregnant. There's a chance you have that, but the doctor would have to do blood work or an ultra sound to determine. I've found that the phyisical description that you can find on www.webmd.com doesn't fit for me or a few of my friends who also have it. You just never know.

Since I know at least 5 people with it, I'd say it's fairly common though.

Hi, I would get to a good woman doc- start asking around. Your iron is probably low by now, make sure she checks it. If you feel exhausted, I wouldn't be surprised. It is defitely hormonal, I am sure, but you do bleed for other reasons. Just sounds like your body is protesting right now. Nothing to fool with.

You should go to a well trusted gynecologist. It sounds like you have dysfunctional uterine bleeding. You may need a trial of oral contraceptives to help with this problem, but it needs to be evaluated. There are many causes of dysfunctional uterine bleeding and depending on the cause you will get the appropriate treatment.

I had this happen to me when I was on birth control. My periods were no shorter than 3 weeks. Once I stopped I was fine.
I'm not sure what to tell you. I was miserable and I was in a lot of pain (cramping), so I'm not sure. I would definately talk to a doctor though, because if nothing else, I'm sure it's an inconveneince!

M.,
Having periods that long is not normanl and should definetly be checked out by a doctor. It may be something simple as needing a D&C or changing your birth control perscription, but it could be something much more serious. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
