A few years ago my daughter kept getting lice over and over, nothing was working. Then the pediatrician told me to coat her hair and scalp with Vasolene
(or mayo, but that grossed me out) and sleep with a shower cap on. Apparently that smothers the little boogers. It worked wonders! The only draw back was that I had to wash her hair in dishwashing detergent about 5 times to get all of the Vasolene out. Hope this helps!~

Try a product call PRONOT. It is usually right next to the rid. When I was about 15 I had lice so bad that it took 7 treatments to get rid of it. We always used rid and it worked like a charm, but I think with more severe cases PRONTO is a much better product to use. Once we bought that and did ONE treatment it was gone for good. Hope that helps you.

After going through this for 6 weeks with the chemicals, I finally found a better solution. Listerine, vinegar, dawn dish soap, and cocnut suave conditioner with tea tree oil in it. First, put some listerine in a spray bottle, spray on childs head and saturate down to the scalp, place a shower cap on for about 2-3 hours, after that time, remove the shower cap and rinse out the listerine, you will see the dead lice falling out of the hair, its amazing. Then do the same thing with vinegar and put the shower cap on for about 30 minutes, this loosens up the eggs and makes them easier to comb out. Rinse that out and wash the hair with dawn. Put 8-10 drops of tea tree oil in your conditioner and shake, lice hate the coconut and the tea tree oil, so this works as a repellent, put the conditioner on the hair and rinse. Next all you have to do is comb it out with a good METAL nit comb, I actually use a cat flea comb that you can get at Wal mart or pet supply store, the teeth are closer together and it works much better to remove the eggs and any remaining dead lice in the hair. We did this once with the girls, who both have long hair, and we didnt have to do it again, they are lice free! I was at the point that I was gonna take them to the doctor until I read about the chemicals that are in the prescriptions they will give you, I'm sorry but if I have to wear gloves to apply this to my childs head, WHY would I want to put it on their bare scalp!!!!??? You can get alot of good home remedies on myhomeremedies.com. Also, there is an electronic lice comb out there, we also bought one of these, its called a robi comb and you can purchase it a walgreens, its a great way to continue the combing just to make sure they dont have them. We also use the tea tree oil in the shampoo every day to repel them, and use it about 20 drops in a spray bottle full of water to spray around the house to keep them away, and I spritz the girls hair with it daily. I know it all sounds like alot, but its all worth it to be lice free, oh and don't forget to wash all bedding in hot water, and put up all the stuffed animals in a plastic bag for two weeks to get rid of any that may be on them.

Liquid lusol works. remember to wash your brushes and sombs in it, either throw away your pillows and buy new ones or wash them in lysol in the washer. The same goes for sheets, blankets and spray your mattress with a lysol cleaner, spray carpets also if you have carpet. You may need to do this three or four times.

Once a month I wash my hair and all of my childrens hair with Hartz dog shampoo. It really makes your hair shine. Best of all, my children have never had lice!! This is going to sound bad but use mayonaise. Get a plastic shower cap or 2, slather the hair in mayo, and go to sleep. Wash the hair in the morning a few times to get the smell out. After a few days do it again to make sure you got all of the eggs. My friends daughter has really thick hair and the rid didn't work, so she tried this and it worked great, plus it is healthy for the hair. The hair may smell a little vinagary for a day or so, but the lice will be gone.

Lots of people keep mentioning tea tree oil. That is true that it repels lice but you have to make sure that it is a really high grade of tea tree oil. If you have a friend that uses Melaleuca products, their shampoo has the highest grade of tea tree oil in it that you can buy. The thing is you have to be a member to get the product but chances are you know somebody that uses their products and hopefully they can just order it for you. You will never get lice again if you wash with this shampoo. It only takes a nickel size to wash a thick head of hair and even then you are rinsing and rinsing. Keeps hair very healthy too. Good luck!

My daughter came home from VBS with it a few weeks ago. My nutritionist told me to use tea tree oil mixed with her shampoo everyday. It worked wonderfully. Here are some other ideas recommended by my midwife. (I was due any day, and didn't need headlice around a newborn.) I hope this helps!!!
Shampoo (use an inexpensive brand such as Prell -- these seem to mix
more easily with the oils).
3 tbsp olive oil.
1 tsp tea tree oil.
1 tsp rosemary or eucalyptus oil.
Add the oils to a small amount of shampoo and mix well. Work into hair
and leave on for half an hour with a tight-fitting shower cap. This
mixture has a strong smell. The fumes may burn the eyes, so don't lean
forward. Wash hair two or three times to get the oil out. Repeat the
procedure if necessary.
*********************************************************
The following treatment for removal of head lice is recommended: Add
five to ten drops of pure tea tree oil to a shampoo and wash the
child's hair, massaging the mixture thoroughly into the scalp. Do this
every day until the eggs are removed. In between shampoos, a few drops
of the oil can be massaged into the scalp. Do not rinse out. To help
sterilize and prevent further lice infestation, brushes, combs,
bedding and towels may be soaked in a tea tree oil solution of 1/4 oz.
of oil added to a tub of water. You may also spray a dilution of tea
tree oil in the clothes hamper to help control infestation.

You've received some really good suggestions and I agree with most about not using Rid and other chemicals on your children. The thing I want to EMPHASIZE is what everyone said, and that is WASH ALL BEDCLOTHING, SPRAY HOUSE, CARPET, FURNITURE, CAR UPHOLSTERY, BACKPACKS after each incidence. Three of my grandchildren had lice EVERY time I saw them and EVERY time they came to my house for 7 YEARS!!! I just knew I had to treat them each time they came to visit and my husband and I stayed in hotels when we visited them in OK. My step-daughter simply did not handle the matter properly, even though I sent her detailed instructions on what to do (after the 2 girls had visited several times with heads full of lice--she shaved the boy's head). I stayed angry with her for years and it greatly affected our visits with her. When the children came, I had to treat my whole house over and over and over. Two of my other grandchildren had lice after spending the night over here when those children were here. One single parent had to miss 3 days of work (salary docked) because daycare would not let them come back. From my perspective, lice infestation is serious business. I REALLY AFFIRM YOU FOR TRYING TO GET HELP WITH THIS!!! I really feel for you, God bless you and good luck.

You have received a lot of responses, but I haven't seen this one yet... Cetaphil skin cleanser. Coat dry hair with Cetaphil cleanser, then blow dry. The cleanser "shrink wraps" the hair and suffocates the lice. We left this on overnight, then washed it out in the morning. Go through hair daily with a nit comb to remove all eggs. Also, rinsing or spraying the hair with original brown Listerine (other brands may not have the exact same ingredients) helps keep the lice away in the future. If you have a boy, I'd recommend having his hair buzzed just to make things easier. It was torture going through my daughter's long, thick hair with a nit comb! Good luck!

My 2 daughters had lice this past winter and I found that Listerine mouthwash worked great. I bought the Walmart brand and soaked their hair until it dripped, then I covered their hair in a grocery bag for 2 hours and then used shampoo to wash as normal. Changed all the mattress sheets, pillowcases and blankets. Put the stuffed animals and blankets in the dryer on hot. Soaked hair brushes in the mouthwash overnight. Vacuumed the carpets well(especially in their bedroom). I did it for 2 weekends in a row and I haven't seen them since.
We tried several things the first 2 weeks, but the mouthwash method seemed to work best and we repeated it a second time just to be sure.Good luck.

The Robi comb is the best. It is a battery operated comb with the fine teeth. It tells you when you have a bug in the teeth. It does not get all the nits, so you must use it everyday for several weeks. No messy shampoos and it is easy. Make sure you use it everyday for several weeks. During the school year, we use it about once a week to catch it before it gets infested! No chemicals. We have also done the Mayo and vasoline. We have tried everything. This is the easist. The comb can be bought at Walgreens and is about $30.00. Since I bought it 6 months ago, I no longer spend $15.00 a week on RID or other shampoos that have to be reaplied in 7 days.

I feel your pain! We dealt with this twice in the past (trying on hats not a good idea, and make sure not to have a child over who was treated within 48 hours!j). It is very time consuming and fairly expensive to treat well. It's very important to vaccuum and spray your furnitue and cloth car seats and headrests and vaccum carpets well (then throw away the bag or dirt). Wash all bedding in hot water. Put any stuffed animals or other unwashable cloth items that were anywhere near people's heads away in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks.
It's really important to have some thoroughly comb the nits (eggs) out of your hair with the tiny comb. I couldn't get rid of mine for a long time in my long hair because my husband didn't do it carefully enough--no patience for the job. After trying the over the counter remedies and checking around, a tried sleeping with vaseline in my hair, but it didn't work. What finally seemed to work was sleeping with mayonaise in my hair, covered in plastic.
Hope these suggestions help. I'm sorry you're having this trouble. God Bless!

We like everyone else in this country have gone through this as well. With the boys, no biggie. Shave the head and pick them puppies out. But with my daughter, there was no way I was shaving her head. Even though she was coming home from pre-school with them. It finally dawned on me that neither myself, my husband or our female roommate at the time ever got these. Why?? Because we all DYE our hair. Yes, even my poor hubby. I would use any left over dye I had to help hide his greys that he didnt like! So I started Dying my 4 year olds hair. We have kept it up at least once every year since and she has never come home with Lice again! Working at the school I have seen some pretty bad out breaks. Love being the one called by the office staff to come help check heads! Ewww.. *L* But it has to be done!
I know everyone else has told you to spray the carseat. I took the carseats apart, washed the covers, placed the seat its self in the Black Plastic bag, sprayed the Rid inside the bag and BAKED that puppy in the SUN all day long! All stuffed animals went through the HOT Dryer as well, then into the Bags to BAKE in the SUN every day for about two weeks.
Hang in there.. we all feel your pain and know exactly what you are going through. You will win!

My daughter has white hair and you can't see them a friend told me this and it works. To prevent them coming back keep hair pulled back in braids or pony tail for at least a month. Don't use the dog shampoo it is different and not safe to use, cat skin is more like people skin, so the stuff if really is really different from cat to dogs. Also if you can get some real lye soap it will work pretty good too. We were really poor when my girls were young, so I learned all this stuff out of a real need.. Also you need to know that deat was outlaw at one time for the use on dogs because they found it caused tumors. Yet they want us to use it on our kids.

Unfortunately the best way to get rid of lice is to cut the hair short, continue with Rid and use the comb to remove the eggs. I used to have to pull them out by hand after washing and blowing dry the hair. Bleach the sheets in hot water and change them frequently. It will pass - cutting the hair short is the fastest way and hair does grow back.

Wash and treat all bedding, carseat, clothing, boil brushes, bomb the house if you can.

MAYO! You put regular mayonase in your hair and leave it for like 30 minutes to an hour. You may want to put a shower cap on as well so it doesn't get on anything. Do this a few days in a row and it should work. My friend did it when her daughter got lice and she didn't want to put chemicals in her hair. You can probably google lice remedy and mayo and get some more specific directions.

I know you've received a lot of responses so maybe you heard this one already, but Vaseline will do the trick. A young cousin of our had lice a few years ago, and when the RID didn't work, this is what the doctor recommended. You have to load it in and then I think put a plastic shower cap on and leave it overnight. I was told this suffocates the lice. You DO NOT need to cut the hair short. Lice actually like to live by the roots, so cutting hair does not do anything (unless you want to go bald!).

Also if you live in the country and have hyssop available make a tea out of it and pour it on the head and leave on for ten minuets and rinse you will see a lot of nits just go down the drain. I have a large family and we have dealt with lice on three occasions. The last one was for over a month. I tried many things. The last time our family had it, nothing would work. The thing that finally worked for us was LiceX. http://licerx.discovertotalhealth.com/ It is a little costly, but I was at the point to where I wanted to shave everyone's hair off including mine. I have four girls and 1 boy. All of us girls had long thick hair. I spent hours picking out eggs.
If your children have thin hair and you can pick out all of the eggs then you could probably be safe trying some of the home remedies. These methods worked for us the first time we dealt with lice. We did real Mayo with a shower cap on overnight. The mayo suffocates all of the live bugs. You can also use Orange Oil. You can but this at a raw furniture store. You put it on and leave it for about 15 minutes. I repeated these after about 10 days and looked for any remaining eggs. To wash both of these off you can use Dawn dish soap. It gets the grease out. With both of these methods you MUST pick out all of the eggs. It is much easier to get them out while the hair is still greasy. Make sure you are washing all of the bedding even the ones who do not have lice. I also used the spray that you can buy to spray on the matresses, carpet, and furniture. The last time we had lice I sprinkled diatomaceous earth all over the carpets and matresses, left them on for a while, and them vacuumed it up. I did leave some on the matresses and just covered it with the matress pad. You will want to wear shoes when you do this. It is not harmful, but it is crushed up sea creatures and it will make you feet really dry and scratchy.
As a preventative I add about a teaspoon of tea tree oil (you can buy from Wal-mart) to our shampoo. It doesn't smell great, but it keeps us from getting lice. I do not want to go through any of that mess again. The Lice X also has a spray that you can spray on your hair as a preventative. I am not sure what all is in it, but it smells like Tea Tree Oil. Good luck on your venture. I feel for your pain. Also the stuffed animals in a bag. We left ours in the garage for a couple of months. Also put your pillows in the dryer for a cycle. I also sprayed the seats of the cars with the lice spray.
