Leaving My Baby Who Doesn't Take a Bottle! Help!

My three moth old refuses the bottle. At a few weeks old she took it, but for the last 6-8 weeks, we cannot get her to take it at all. She responds with extreme frustration, crying, and gagging (we've tired different bottles, mom leaving the room, begining of feeding, middle, and end to no avail). Today I had a dental cleaning apt. and left her with dad. It was nerve racking and even though hungry, she didn't take the bottle while I was gone. So now I find I need to get a crown. I'm agonizing how I"m going to take care of my dental problems with my little ball and chain. Any thoughts? Worst case scenario I bring her along, but really, thats not going to be good. She is a slow eater, so suppose I do nee to feed, it will take an hour. I'm almost ready to let my tooth rot? Anyone have a better solution?

What can I do next?

Try the playtex latex (brown) slow flow nipple, you could try cup feeding or syringe feeding her while you are away from her.

Maybe you don't need a different bottle but just a smaller flow nipple. Playtex has slow, med, fast and tricut nipples for their bottles. Go with the slowest flow nipple you can find. The problem is when she nurses, she gets nothing unless she sucks, with most nipples (not the tricut) the constant dripping flow can gag a baby that's not ready for it yet.

schedule the appt. for during her nap time.

feed her right before your appt., then have someone stay/drive around with her til your appt. is done.

When I was in a similar situation I would make sure my husband or mother could come along and stay with the baby during the apt itself. I would make sure I fed them as close as possible to leaving the waiting room for my apt and as soon as I left the office I'd feed them in the car or waiting room if they were hungry again. I've got 3 kids. If I didn't do it this way I would never take care of myself. If there isn't room in the waiting room they can sit in the car or dad can push them around the area in the stroller. Adding driving time to any doctor or dentist apt was always the part that broke the bank so to speak for me. If I got stuck in traffic or anything I was screwed. I never pumped a single time with any of my 3 and they never got anything until they started solids and I introduced water so they had something so they didn't choke on food. I had to have a crown myself and this is how I did it.

Good morning, This problem comes up often with nursing moms, if breast milk is the only thing you will give your baby, sometimes it's god to pump and put it in a bottle, the breast is addicting just ;like the bottle and breast feeding is not always conveinet like sitting at the dentist office. You just have to keep working with her with the bottle, how are dads supossed to be abvle to spend time with the baby's while moms out of the house if you always breast feed? let this serve as experience for when you have your next one. Feed her right before you leave. And when you are back. Make sure she is full and content(preferably sleepy) when you leave and get back before her next feeding.I would be more worried if you were going to work or something everyday and she refuses to take a bottle all the time.. This is will be just couple times and also your appt wont be that long , that she will starve. Maybe if she gets too tired and hungry from all the crying , she might decide to take the bottle when you are gone.
In case your dentist is a long drive from home , you can leave early and take her with you.Feed her in the car or anywhere you are comfortable right before your appt, Leave her with dad until you are done. Dentists generally do it in 2 or more sittings.Maybe talk to yours if it's possible to get it done in different sittings, that would be better for you if she can get hungry again too soon.

My daughter never took bottles and I began working before she was able to take solids. The helpful advice I received was: The bottom line is your child is not going to allow themselves to starve. She might be upset...really, really upset and she might be hungry by the time you return. But nothing more than that, especially as you're only going to be gone one afternoon at a time.
