Leather Sofa - Do You like Yours?

We are thinking about buying a new leather sofa. My husband has had negative comments from a couple men who said that the leather sticks to their skin and is uncomfortable. We have a leather chair and think it's great. What are your experiences? I want leather because I find that the cloth sofa's smell after a while and get dirtier.

What can I do next?

I have all 'soft leather furniture and it wears really well and does not stick. I got mine at Becks and it's chocolate brown. I got the whole set - couch, love seat and chair and they all have electric recliners. It is very nice. It is just a matter of preference. A friend at my work got the same set and loves it!

We have leather sofas. The first time your kid spills something, you'll be glad you got it. Sticking to it - only certain men sit long enough to stick to it. We have never suffered from that because we have kids! They are very comfortable. Our only complaint is that one sofa can be cold at first, but that is purely because where it lives in the house - cold part of the house. Young kids - well worth it. Older ones, you could go either way.

Yes. We like ours a lot.

But even with fabric sofas... DO NOT sit on it, without a shirt on. Per Men.
I mean, even a fabric sofa will stain from their stickiness/sweat, too. That is not pleasant. And yes, it will smell. Again, from Men sitting on it all sweaty or without a shirt on.

Anyway, we like our leather sofas. Have had it since we got married and ever since we've had kids. (about 14 years). We have had NO problems with it, nor with out kids.
Much easier than fabric.

I just tell my Husband, do NOT sit on it without a shirt! It is common sense. Or it will get, stained/ruined because of his sweaty back... and he'd be wasting money! That, sank in with him.

I mean, in our van, after working out, he'll put a towel on the seat, so his sweat doesn't mar it and get it wet/sticky.
So WHY not do that at home too, on our LEATHER sofa??? Or just put a shirt on.

If he does want to sit on the sofa without a shirt on, then he should put a TOWEL in the back of him. Ha, ha!

We are in fact, getting some new leather chairs.
Because, our leather has done so well.
It is a good quality though. Not suede either.

Our friends have leather too. They have kids. It has lasted very well and still looks nice.

You just have to care for it, it is an investment.
No shirtless sweaty backs on it. Sweaty shirtless backs, will ruin any furniture, after awhile.
I use the leather care kit, on ours too, occasionally.

Anyway sorry for rambling. My pet peeve as you see, is/was when my Hubby sat on the sofa, without his shirt. Ick. Poor sofa!
Who'd want to sit on the sofa, after some sticky/sweaty guy(s) sat in it, without their shirt on.

Love it! I will never have anything but leather in my family room. It is easy to clean and always looks clean. My couches are very traditional looking too with nail head trim on the arms and bottom front of the couch so it does not have to look modern if that is not your style. Re: sticking to leather....We do have central air so sticking to the couch is not a problem, even in the heat. Is it possible they are sticking to vinyl though not leather?

We just purchased a leather set from Costco vs cloth because of the reason you mentioned. The issues of it being uncomfortable depends on the quality. Poor quality will stick to your skin a whole lot more than a good quality. Also, a cheaper grade of leather will wear out pretty fast and crack.

Our frineds have had a leather recliner for about 6 years and there is a dark stain on the head cushion where he sits from the oils in his hair. Something to consider like the earlier post of making sure you wear a shirt.

I am so loving reading all this advice because we are in the market for a new sofa as well. We were thinking leather, but we have cats. I know leather is great with dogs, but what about cat nails? I always figured that they'd poke it too much when they put out their claws to jump up on it. And our cats are allowed in the living room where the sofa will be, so I can't prevent them from jumping up, and we can't be here every minute to watch them. Any one have any experience with leather furniture and cats?

GOOD leather does not stick to your skin! It's FABULOUS!
I had an ivory, good leather sofa & love seat that breezed through a husky, a toddler and a husky mix puppy. If it had been fabric, it would have been toast long before it was. It was extremely good leather--it was cool in the summer and warm & cozy during the winter.

We have a leather sofa, recliner and chair. We have had it for 8 years and we love it. We have 2 kids and a dog. It stays clean, doesn't smell (believe me lots of milk has spilled over the years) and still looks new. my legs never stick to it. Just make sure you get real leather. Watch out for "Leather Match". Its leather where you touch and vinyl everywhere else. If you are fine with that, good, just make sure you are getting what you are paying for...

LOVE IT. We have 3 sets.

We have a higher middle grade in the family room that has help up well for 10 yrs! Just wipe it with a damp cloth to clean. We paid about $3000. We opted for 2 ottomans and that was a great decision.

We have an old Natuzzi that is about 15 yrs old in a game toom upstairs that has taken a beating and still looks great. paid about $1000

We have a custom set we had made (Leather Sofa Company) in the formal area and Love it as well. Paid about $6000 (custom made).

We have 1 daughter and 3 dogs. Our dogs are confined to the family area and not in the area with the custom set.

I LOVE my Italian Leather couch - ours has recliners at each end...we have a matching love seat as well as the recliner....

Yes, skin can stick but I find that if you wear longer shorts or pants you are fine....especially since most men DO wear longer shorts...

We had decided on a leather sofa and love seat because we had 2 cats and thought it would handle the scratches and age better....we were right. It does depend on what color your get. We went with brown and any little scratch just gives it character like it belongs there. You will have to condition it though a few times a year, maybe more depending if it's in the sun. We did find the areas we sat in got darker because of oil from your skin but again, if you stay on conditioning the whole thing it will blend in...and again look natural.

Good luck!
