Laundry/Mud Room Rug

My laundry room is small and tight and takes a lot of traffic...a LOT! Especially in a Minnesota winter! I am looking for a good rug to put in the room that will catch the water/sand/rocks/salt before it gets tracked through the house. I had one but water would get trapped underneath and smell. And it didn't seem to trap as well as I hoped. I do have an outdoor type mat before you get in the house that is supposed to help but doesn't seem to do much. Anyone have something they love and works well?

What can I do next?

I'm a fan of FLOR carpet tiles. In particular, the House Pet line for heavy traffic areas. They look good, have a heavy rubber backing and don't show all the water and grit that comes through our back door. Easy to install and the colors are beautiful. But according to the website, they are not recommended for heated floors. Good luck!

I have a couple of thicker woven "rag" style rugs which are washable. I use them at the front door and in the kitchen or sometimes wherever else necessary. They seem to collect a lot of junk really quickly, stop dirt at the door... I can take them outside, shake out the junk and then wash'em.

Here are some examples:

And make sure they're washable.

I would suggest an 'outdoor rug' that's designed for California Outside Livingrooms/kitchens/etc (super pretty options) woven of fade & weather resistant stuff like soft olefin or plastics.

http://m.frontgate.com/mt/www.frontgate.com/outdoor-decor... has some pricey options.

Home Depot has similar but much much less expensive options ($50-$200).

In either case... When they get dirty... You just take em outside & hose em off!

In winter, if they get caked in mud/salt, you can let dry, then roll up & wack with the handle of a broom as you roll to knock off the dried mud as you go, then sweep up the knocked off dried mud/dirt off the floor.

I like LLBean's waterhog mats. I have two in my mudroom, small and large. They pick up water and dirt well. I have my kids stand on the big one when they come in from outside and just leave all their wet clothes on it, works well and they look nice.

You want a rubber or fabric mat with rubber backing.

I have a trail of rugs that are in our laundry room (which leads to backyard) and a 162# mountain dog that loves snow and dirt!

The rug I have by the back door is a heavy duty indoor/outdoor commercial "rubber" rug. It has groves to catch water, sand, dirt, etc. They are heavy, wash up with a mop. I purchased one at Home Depot for $25.00 and one at Sams for $17.00

The other rug has a rubber bottom and the top has the fiber carpet.

They have different sizes, so measure the size you would like. Measure the clearance to open/close the door too as many mats have different thickness.
