Laundry & Little Boys

Over the past 6mo, my uncircumcised 6 year old hasn't been "shaking off" as well as he should be. We're working on that...but in the meantime I'm at a loss laundry-wise. Even if I wash the offending article 2 or 3 times (in Tide Liquid)there's still the pee smell to greater or lesser degree. His underwear I can bleach to a fare-thee-well, but his shorts & pants have got me stumped. I HATE having to wash on piece of clothing over and over. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

First of all, good for you for not circumcising! I'm very grateful to my in-laws for researching circumcision and deciding against it.

Second - if it really is a shaking off issue then you can always have him just dab the tip with a single square of toilet paper (so he doesn't use it up too quickly) which should take care of any dripping problems. My husband sometimes dabs if just shaking doesn't do the trick.

I also agree that vinegar is great for pee smell. We cloth diaper and use vinegar in the wash when they start to smell strongly.

Best wishes!

Add Borax to your laundry soap. Use Arm and Hammer Laundry Detergent. Or, since it is summer-dry them out side until fall. Dry them inside-out once to see if that makes a difference. Mother Nature's cure all-fresh air.

The trick is vinegar. Just add it to the laundry water and wash as normal and the smell washes away. If it is a really concentrated odor, I would put the vinegar directly on the clothing and voila the odor is gone. I used to buy vinegar in bulk at Costco and keep it by the washing machine. It works wonders.

- be sure your little boy is drinking enough- might even check with his doctor that he doesn't have a urinary tract infection goin - I raised two boys and didn't have this problem - course there were days there ( with 3 children- was a single mom - took care of my ailing mother- and did some church work, too) when I was not sure if I could make it til bed-time- but I did and rejoice in my great kids- -

Oxyclean detergent does very well at getting odors out of clothing.

Hi Z.,

One of my kids is disabled and incontinent and on a listserve for parents of kids like mine, the issue of smells comes up frequently.

One of the most recent suggestions that I started to use that works well is to add a few drops of Tea Tree Essential oil (I also add some Grapefruit oil) to the laundry detergent. Tea Tree is a great oil - it works for so many different things.

Good luck,

C.
