So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all your info on the latest GI Bug. We did go to childrens hospital in which they ran 2 bags of IV fluids (we had pushed Pedilyte for days every 15 min., we were very good at making this happen) regardless this nasty virus gave us a trip to the hospital for a 2 night stay. It is rotovirus and my ped. did not recommend the vaccine. next child we have will have this vaccine!

I am sorry he is sick! Make sure he is hydrated--friends of mine nearly lost their little girl to rotavirus several years ago because she was so dehydrated. If he has dry diapers after several hours, take him in! Offer him liquids as often as he will take them. Also, the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) helps "stop them up". Hope he feels better soon!

I would have to agree with the first response. When my daughter got it she vomited for 3 days. The doc just told me to give her stomach rest and to only give her liquids in tsp amount to see if she would keep it down. If she didn't vomit after 15min i could give her more. The doc also told me that it was ok to give her gatorade. I know it's so sad to see them so sick.

Main thing is to keep him hydrated. Got get Pedialyte. I think vomiting has to the worst as they have no idea what is happening to them! Poor guy. I know when we got it back a few months ago the Dr said a child should not throw up for more then 24 hours, if he does take him in. I would say most stomach bugs are done at least by my experience in 48 hrs.

If your in any doubt of your sons hydration I would definatly make a trip to the docs because sometime its better to be safe than sorry and worth the co-pay. My oldest son had rotovirus 5 years ago and by the time I got him to the doctors he was severly dehydrated and in need of IV. He had a 3 day stay in the hospitol at the young age of 9 months.

I am wondering if that is not what my little boy has. He's only two months old... has you son been running a fever with it at all?

My 6 month old has had it for a week!! It got pretty bad and she couldn't keep anything down . .at all and started getting dehydrated. We ended up doing 3 tsp of pedialite every 15 minutes for 2 hours. She kept that down so we went to 1 oz every 20 minutes for 2 or 3 hours. After that we went to half soy formula (she's normally on regular formula but our dr said the soy would be easier on her tummy while she has this) half pedialite, 2 ounces total. We are finally up to 4 ounces total, half pedialite, half soy formula. We tried increasing the amount yesterday and she threw it all up so we went back down. We've also been doing a little bit of rice cereal mixed with pedialite during all of this to try and help settle her tummy.

It's been awful. It is really hard to see them so sick. Just make sure he doesn't get dehydrated and wait at least 20 minutes to feed him after her vomits.

Hope he gets better soon.
