Large Pore on Son's Nose - Gross-out Alert

It seems like you mamas have seen everything so I hope you can help me out. There has been a noticeable large pore (only one) on my 3-year-old son's nose since birth. I've asked several of our pediatricians about it and they called it a "pit", I believe, and said to leave it alone. Periodically it becomes swollen and red. Sometimes my husband and I squeeze it because, let's face it, it's esentially a zit. Even if we don't squeeze it, it will get so full, it eventually squirts out on its own. The substance is white and the foulest smelling stuff I've ever smelled.

Has anyone else encountered this and what did you do? I'm hoping I get a little more info so I can share this with my pediatrician. Should I just tell my pediatrician I want a referral for a dermatologist?

I really apologize for the ick factor here, but I really need to do something for my poor son.

What can I do next?

Absolutely. Get a referral and get someone who specializes in this. As someone who has dealt with acne for years, I know what you are talking about. It's clearly a pimple and very likely cystic. Either way, the question remains. Why is a 3-year old getting this and why is it re-ocurring?

Hope this helps. IF it were my son, I wouldn't wait any longer.

Hi. If your doctor called it a "pit" - then it is not a pimple. You should definitely NOT squeeze it - even though it looks like a pimple. (I know, it can ooze on its own, but don't squeeze it.) If these get infected, then your child may need an antibiotic. It can take surgery to remove it (and our doc said, it most likely will take a series of surgeries to remove it all). Definitely go see a specialist. I can't believe your doc didn't tell you more about it.

I agree with Nicole. Get the referral. It may be or may not be something, but it's best to hear that from a specialist.

Good luck!

Hi B.,
My 7 year old has had one of these gross pits on his ear since birth. Years ago I took him to a specialist who suggested surgery in which case they open it down to stitch it closed. We chose not to do the surgery mostly cause he's never had it flair up or had any pain. But also cause a couple of mom's with grown children told me that their kids had them and outgrew them. I too squeeze every now and then and get that stinky stuff. His looks like a sort of piercing. Anyhow just wanted to let you know you're not alone. Of course each case is different, I think you should get a couple of peds opinions and do what you think is best for your little one. good luck.
