Aloha everyone! Does anyone know a good environmentally, pet, and child friendly way of getting rid of flies? I have 2 St. Bernards & clean up after them daily but we still have a large amount of flies in our yard. I don't want to do the "jug thing" because I think it'll just attract more flies. Mahalo for your time.

We had a large amount of flies due to a neighbor. Since we couldn't get rid of the neighbor, I went on line and ordered fly traps (hope that is not what you meant by jug). Anyway, they greatly reduced the fly problem. You can feed the dog garlic to keep the flies away from the dog.

When I lived in a trailer park I used to spray bleach on the ground. It kept the flies and fleas in check. I still spray bleach around the yard to keep the flies in check, there are no fleas here in Nevada. I was told it is too hot for them. Good Luck.

Live rosemary plants, potted or in-ground, are a natural deterrent to flies! :) The more plants the better...

This is a great website for natural products/pest control etc.
Here is the link:

I also heard that Avon Skin So Soft works at deterring flies as well, and not only mosquitoes.

You also might want to make sure the flies are not ON your dogs or causing them problems as well... I have heard of flies laying eggs on dogs as well.

Here's another product:

Try doing a Google search as well.

Good luck!

On farms fly tape is used. It's unattractive, but works. Located at hardware stores. It comes in a lipstick sized tube, open it up and it's gummy sticky tape about a foot long-flies love it! When full, throw it away.

Michelle, We have two Great Danes, and like you, although we clean up after them immediately, we still have flies. We use SWAT clear formula ointment. It is a fly reppellent ointment that is typically used on horses. Last summer, the flies were really biting the dogs' ears and this ointment helped repel the flies and heal the bite areas. You can find this at most pet stores - it is pretty common. B.
