WE love this gate from one step ahead http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId...
It fits a wide doorway, easy to manipulate and looks nice!
I am looking for a good baby gate that will fit a wide doorway, that will keep my new crawler where we want him, but is easy enough for my 3 1/2 year old to manipulate and open so that he can come and go as he pleases, so he can easily get to the bathroom and his bedroom.

Hi A.,
I had my husband make me one a few years back because when my son was young I had a hysterectomy done and it was nearly impossible for me to climb over the gates and a pain to keep opening and shutting the regular gates. If your husband is handy making things, he could easily make one out of wood and use piano hinge so that it could fold nicely against the wall when it is not needed. My husband used a regular hook for it to stay closed, which most 3 year olds could use. Hope this helps.

Check out One Step Ahead online. They have tons of safety stuff and gates.

We got several larger gates off of Amazon.com. We just searched for "baby gates" and then weeded through all the results to find larger ones. The brand of our gate is Summer. The gates are very large and there are different latching systems so you can get one that your boy can operate. Check it out. Hope this helped.
I had a good one that I bought at Babies R Us for $100 (best money I ever spent). It could expand up to 16 feet, with a little gate in the middle that my friend's 5 year old had no trouble operating. I can't remember the name of it, but it was the only super-giant one they had.
This is the one I have which covers a pretty wide area and you can buy extenders... http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=226580...
Your older child should be able to open it if he is tall enough. You just have to use your thumb to press a button while lifting the gate up.
There are also some that you press your foot down on to open the gate which I really like too and your older boy should be able to manipulate.

Here are the gates we have. We have 3 very large penings that just do not work with the regular baby gates. Plus a woodstove that needed a gate around it. These have worked great for us.

I like my easy step baby gate! We bought ours at Burlington, but I'm sure you can get it else where and I know there's one jsut like it in the One Step Ahead. My 2yr old can work it and until you little one can reach it you don't even have to officially latch it! It's either pressure mounted or can be screwed in. I don't know how big of an opening you're talking about, but this one has extentions you can buy to go with it!
Check out onestepahead.com. It's a wonderful resource for things you didn't even know you needed for babies and toddlers! I love their products and their prices are reasonable.

I used the evenflo wood expansion swing gate from walmart. I think it was 30 dollars. We had a very wide stairway and it worked great. However, you have to have sturdy walls if it is going to be used in a heavy traffic area. Other than that, it did it's job, sometimes keeping me out as well.LOL
