Ergo is the best I've used and I went through a few before I found that one. I love it!!!! You can use it on the front or back.

I have LOVED my Sherpani backpack. We used it for walking about town, but mostly for hiking and backpacking. We love it because it has a storage compartment below the seat for bring along diapers, etc. In addition, the seat itself is adjustable to allow it to last beyond the time you want to carry the child on your back (I think it holds an child up to forty pounds). In addition, it was the most comfortable to wear for a parent. A friend of ours gave us a Kelty. We couldn't stand it and our 4 month old didn't like it either.

The Ergo Baby Carrier!! This is the best, of course in my opinion! But, I've used many and this is the one that I used the most. You can wear your child on the front, side or back. I used the front mostly until about 8 mos or so then wore my kids on the back almost daily!! They slept great in the Ergo and it NEVER hurt my back. I highly recommend it! I used it with my first two and wil use it with my third. We own two so my husband and I were able to each carry a kid.

As infants, both of my daughters and I loved the Sling Eeze baby sling. I got it from a lactation consultant to does her classes at Los Alamitos. And other companies have similar slings using UV protection fabric that breathes a little better.

Personally, I think it all depends on you and the baby, as my kids didn't like the ones where their legs dangle at the bottom when they were really little. When they got bigger, I still used the sling, but had them straddle me and their legs could hang out (if you look it up online, there are photos). Your best bet might be to take them to a baby store and try them all on.

I picked up a used Ergo I really like. It's on the rugged-looking side (IMO it looks better with age), but isn't too large to keep handy. (http://www.ergobabycarrier.com) My 2y7mo old is getting a little big for me to carry her for very long, but my husband doesn't seem to mind. And I can carry my 6 mo son for hours in it. I'm still carrying him on my front, but could easily switch him to my back if I ever took the time to practice it.
I also have a Babyhawk mei tai I used with my daughter from 10 mos to 2 yrs. For shorter errands I can carry either of them in a sling with a hip carry, but that's not a backpack.

We have the Kelty Kids Pathfinder and find it sturdy and comfortable (adjustable traps for back support) for long hikes, it also has pockets for storing small items. It also feels safer because the baby gets strapped in. My husband has an issue with the Bjorn, he doesn't think it's "manly," so this works for him. For small walks or mom outings I did take the Bjorn (my son is to big for the Bjorn now).
