The first season of Thomas the Tank, the British version. They are kind of snarky. And Ringo Starr is a brilliant narrator. The US version of the show is awful, by comparison.
Little Bear is sweet and calm.

DS currently is a fan of yo gaba gaba. I hear that kids kind of cycle through shows. What did your toddlers/ preschoolers like?
we'll get gaba gaba on netflix, he'll be playing elsewhere, but he really likes to dance along with the characters. He'll race over to learn the moves and dance along with foofa and rex.
He's still in love with yo gaba gaba, but hubs and I are not sure how many more times we can endure this. Any tips and suggestions for what might resonate with the toddler set, but not be too sachrine for the adults would be appreciated.
Thanks for your tips.

My kids are ob-sessed with Yo Gabba Gabba. I actually dont mind it, since its all music. They have the stuffed animals, shirts, even bedding and blankets. Its been going on 3 1/2 years, though my older daughter is starting to ask for something else instead. Without that show, Id never be able to cook dinner or do any house cleaning without them under my feet constantly. For some reason its the only show that holds my lo (13 months) attention. He carries the little stufties around the house and snuggles them.
Oh, and the robots name is Plex, not Rex, lol.
As for how long it will last, when my dd started getting closer to 3, she stated getting more into movies, or shows with more plot, but she will still watch the baby stuff if it put it on for brother.
Have you seen the lady that shows up in the sparkly gold jumpsuit yet? Shes a semi-regular character on the show. If not just wait, whoa is that lady something. Oh, and the drawing guy is the lead singer from Devo, as in 'whip it'.
Try Bubble Guppies or Little Einsteins, my lo will sometimes watch those. So funny to me people love Max and Ruby, everytime I hear the grandmas voice it makes me want to tear my ears off, the only thing worse is the map on Dora. You could also try Go Diego Go, lots of music in that one too.
I would say stick with PBS (Curious George, Clifford, Sesame Street, etc) Way less annoying than cable network kids' shows ,and my kid loves the programming.
I enjoyed Backyardigans. The music was catchy.
I was a BIG fan of The Backyardigans (search for 'Pirate Treasure' episode, it has really good songs in it!) as well as Max and Ruby and Charlie & Lola!
Our all time favorite kid cartoon has got to be The Berenstain Bears! Forgot about Little Bear, it is good!
~I truly dislike Yo Gabba Gabba the first time I saw it but then I saw one episode that had THE best songs in it...wish I could remember what the name of the episode was so I could find it again, would love to hear them again!
Both of my children cycled through several shows. They each get to choose one show to watch per night after dinner so I can get things cleaned up and ready for the next day.
For my son, he really didn't watch anything until he was about 2 1/2, then it was Wonder Pets, the Blue's Clues, then Diego, then Yo Gabba Gabba, then Jake and the Neverland Pirates, then Team Ummi Zoomi, then Max and Ruby, and now when it is his time to pick a show he chooses Tickety Toc (he is 4). I HATE Tickety Toc, in my opinion the kids are rude trouble makers, so we are trying to encourage other shows right now. I really liked Jake and Team Ummi Zoomi.
My daughter was similar, but started at 2 with Dora, then Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, then Yo Gabba Gabba, then Max and Ruby, now it is Doc McStuffins. We both like Doc McStuffins, as it has made both kids aware of so many things with their bodies, "ouchies" and so on.
If you are ready for him to "discover" a new show, the best way I have been able to do it is to have a new one playing in the background when you are doing something else. Don't refer to it, just keep putting together puzzles or coloring or whatever you are doing. If it catches his interest, you will know. If not, try another one. We chose this route when trying to get Dora out of our daughters system. If I heard her ask for her Map once again, I may have thrown a shoe at the TV.
Good Luck.
I really miss the Yo Gabba Gabba phase! I actually liked that one and the songs. My daughter was so into it, we had a YGG theme and a Foofa cake at her 2nd b-day party.
She turns 3 next month and Gabba Land is all but forgotten :( sniff
My two girls are in a "Littlest Pet Shop" phase on the HUb on demand channel. Don't know where they found this but it's an older show with some sassy cartoon brats running the petshop. I am putting the ki-bosh on this one. They are partial to Beauty and the Beast on DVD right now so I am putting that in heavy rotation til they forget about this Littlest Pet Shop trash.
We've been through Bubble Guppies, Team UmiZumi, Gaspar and Lisa, Max and Ruby, and Little Einsteins. I was neutral on all those. Gaspar and Lisa is kinda quirky in a creepy way. I sorta liked that. I also miss the Jake and the Neverland Pirates phase. I enjoyed the songs on that one and Captain Hook and Smee's hijinks never get old for me. Just love those characters.
The WORST was the Caillou phase. Can't stand that bald-headed whiny brat and his frumpy, dweeby parents.
My 2 year old absolutely loves the Fresh Beat Band! We watch a lot of Disney Junior too.
The Backyardigans (my 3 and 4 year olds still love this and its on netflix), Blue's Clues, Little Einsteins, Team UmiZoomi, I know there are more but thats all i can think of right now. If he likes to dance along though def try the backyardigans, i can even stand to sit and watch with them.
If he's still a fan, why push? We hardly watch TV but when we do my daughter refuses to watch anything but Elmo.
Favorite little kids show of all time: Little Bear. Without a doubt. Sweet, calm, mellow.
There is also Max & Ruby, but that can get to ya after a while. :)
I LOVE Backyardigans. The episodes are fun, absolutely NOT annoying, the music and dancing are great (my toddler loves to dance along)...and I am not afraid to admit that I bought a soundtrack and listen to it in my car, even without my children. It's that good.
Check it out...it's on Netflix as well. My favorite is "Riding the Range", but I can't remember which number it is...but really, they are all wonderful. Quest for the Flying Rock has some awesome music...oh, I better just quit. They're all great!
I can also tolerate BusyTown Mysteries (again, not irritating, and really quite funny), Shaun the Sheep, Curious George, and several others. Those are all available on Netflix as well.
Two year old is also a fan of Jake and the Neverland Pirates, but I had to buy a DVD because we don't have cable.
I hated Yo Gabba Gabba the first time my daughter watched it around me and was silently cursing my babysitter for introducing it. But later, it really grew on me. We have all the CDs and I enjoy listening to them too. This past fall we saw the live concert, and that was a blast!
Right now my daughter is almost exclusively into My Little Pony, but at the same time as YGG, she loved Backyardigans (my favorite) and Dinosaur Train. She also liked Curious George and Dragon Tales a lot.
My youngest is 4 - her brother just turned 6.
They still like Backyardigans, Diego, or Busytown - all of which we watch on Netflix.
We also do many of the PBS shows on netflix.
My personal recent favorite are the "Classic" Sesame Street's - I am surprised at how much of it I remember from when I was a kid. I am loving them watching them (also on Netflix).
Max & Ruby...I honestly believe this is an adult show. Anybody who's been an older....or younger sibling...will appreciate the nuances in this show. & yes, it bothers me that there are no parents in the show...only a Gma who lives in the neighborhood. BUT the story lines are wonderful!
Little Bear was my younger son's fav until he was about 4yo. & then he stopped watching tv. The daycare kids like Little Bear, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Bill, Dora & Diego, Barney, Bubble Guppies, & Mike the Knight. They will also watch Sofia the 1st & Team Umizoomi. Now that I think about it, Team Umizoomi is a fav. But Max & Ruby still get my vote!
With my daycare, we watch 1 show per day. Rarely do we see 2. It makes them appreciate it, & sometimes I use it as a reward/special treat. When the kids return from a holiday/vacation, they occasionally have to reacclimate to not having the tv on all day. They expect it on all day!
Oh man....we have been watching the SAME 15 Bubble Guppies on a rotation for about 6-9 months. Every single day she watches 2 episodes. "outside outside, line up everybody outside!" bleh. I am so done. We just recently added UmiZoomi, so at least I don't feel like running and screaming when her show is on.
I forgot about Backyardigans! I liked my boys watching that. I have tried to introduce other show, but she is faithfull to her Bubble Guppies.
AND, I only let her watch one episode in the morning before we head to the gym and one episode before naptime....but the rest of the day she is begging for it. ARGH!

Me and my kids LOVE the "Little Bear" cartoon series. Even at 6 and 10, my kids love that show. Its cute and relaxing. It keys them down.
And I find it not too overly cute.
My two year old is currently into Doc McStuffins (Disney) and Backyardigans (Nick). Backyardigans is my favorite.
