One word: Overalls and lots of them:) And the full one piece pj's for bedtime. The duct tape, onesies and backwards diapering will work when you don't have the overalls.

Anybody have any ideas as to how I can get my 16 month old to keep his diaper on? The past couple of days he's been taking his diaper off and walking around bottomless. Tonight he actually peed on the floor. I know he is much too young to begin potty training and just likes to play with the velcro stuff but I have no idea how to get him to keep his diaper on...help.

I had that same problem, I started putting a onesie on the outside of my little one's pj's/clothes. She can't get past the snaps.
Keep a onesie on him at all times, he won't be able to undo the snaps.
Also, he is not too young to start the process. I suggest getting the potty chair soon and having him sit on it when he does take off his diaper. He may be ready to do it. There is no set age for potty training. My daughter was potty trained BY 2, and I did daycare for twins that were 4 and still in diapers. They had no interest in using the potty.
I giggled at this one. (My little one is 16 months old, too!) I'd probably ROAR if I saw her running through the house naked. :)
A family I sit for masking tapes, or duct tapes their two year old's diaper on before naps and bed. (She'll tear it off and pee in the bed instead- lovely, right?) The mom tried this as a last resort, and it worked! :) I laughed with her as she showed me the 'diaper tape'- but whatever works.
Just make sure the tape is not too tight, and cannot come off easily and pose a choking hazard.
I think every child is different. I know I don't want to deal with potty training for another year, (I enjoy my time out with my daughter without hearing every 15 minutes- I GOTTA GO!) But if you think your little one might be ready- go for it! Some people are advocates for potty training a little early, I believe. But- again, it depends on your particular child, and their readiness.
For a 16 month old, I wouldn't start 'Potty Training' perse- just showing him the potty, and reading books about potty's, (and so on.) I think the basic concept might be grasped in another couple months.
Me? I'd prefer to let my 'baby' be my 'baby' a bit longer. :)
I don't have experience with this but since he plays with velcro it doesn't seem like those velcro covers that go over cloth diapers will work. Duct tape came to my mind. How about you put duck tape on the tabs and circle it around his back and back over so it makes a complete circle. Just an idea.
put his diaper on backwards. I know it sounds weird but it works
hi!! my 16 month old twins love to do the same thing all the time. the only way we can keep diapers on them is to have a onsie on them or to put just pants or shorts on when they don't wear onsies. it is a funny thing to see them undo the starps, pull the diaper down, and run as fast as they can. we call them our little streakers!! good luck!
From someone who just walked in on very happy but diaperless 16 month old at naptime the only advice I can offer is to find a onesie that is snaps at the crotch and is hard for him to undue. He may be skilled enough to wiggle out of it or unsnap it but it may buy you some time until you find another solution. Best of luck! :)
I watch my friend's 21 month old who is going through the same issue. Snaps on (multiple!) onsies doesn't work. She gets past them. They did duct tape, but never overlapped for fear that there would be no "give" around her belly- she still figured out how to rip it off. I caught her trying to rip off the tape AS I was putting it on one day and that's when I started overlapping it anyway. She was fine - I wouldn't do it tightly, but we're all at our wits end over this one. No discipline tactics are seeming to work either at this point - she's just obsessed with taking off ALL her clothes and is a bit too smart for her own good. I was hoping to find some good advice for US in here too, but all the suggestions to put on a onesie or duct tape... they don't always work!
My daughter use to do that and we put panties on top of the diaper. We made a big deal about being able to wear underware and bought the fun ones. It worked most of the time but not all of the time.
Good luck I hated all the laundry that came with that.

When my daughter was little we would put duct tape over the closures and at night we would dress her in her sleeper with it on backwards. It did the trick!
He's definitely NOT too young to begin potty training. I'd at least start looking into it. There are a couple moms here on Mamasource who have sons that were ptrained very young. Hopefully they can offer advice.
I don't think its too early to try to potty train. Just show him the potty and tell him if he doesn't want his diaper on to go in the potty. Give it a week... see what happens.
The underwear idea that someone else already said WORKS GREAT!! I had to do it for my son who is special needs and it kept the diaper on. I am now starting to run into that problem with my twins - the one will take hers off and then she will take her sisters off!! Good Luck!
I am having a hard time keeping clothes on my 2 yr old! We buy overalls becaues thats the only thing she seems to keep on. At night we put her in a footy fitted sleeper, and put it on backwards so the zippers is in the back and she cannot take that off either.
ROFL sorry we just went through this anddddd He will do it many many many times. It lasted 3 months for our daughter. I was soooo tired of putting it on and putting clothes back on.
They will out grow that when they get tired of the game. We put her diaper on backwards she was fine with it for one day then figured it out. I even put one thinging outfits on her and she still figured out how to get the diaper off. All I can say is we are sooooooo happy she is out of this stage rofl.
Good luck. Even Duct tape don't work.
Pull up vinyl diaper covers? Good luck!
Contrary to what many people have said, taking a diaper off isn't a sign that he's ready for potty training. My 3 year old handicapped daughter takes her's off also and she'll never be potty trained. It has more to do with velcro than anything because they like the sound.
The only thing that is full proof is just keeping pants on him or a snap crotch shirt, or both. That's what I have to do with my daughter. I've also heard of putting the diaper on backwards but I've never tried it. Sounds like the duct tape thing works but that would also be a lot of work.
Good luck,
J.
Like many others have said, put a onsie on, then when they figure that out, put it on backwards. The necks are pretty large and should'nt be unconfortable compared to a backwards diaper.
Definitely not too young for potty training, this is a clear sign your 16 month old is showing. I have been reading a lot about potty training and can't believe how old some kids are when they begin. In 1957,90% of children were potty trained by 18 months, kids are gettting potty trained later partly because of the diapers (so absorbant) and because people think kids aren't ready until their 3 which isn't the case for a lot of kids. I would a least try, you'll save money in diapers!
Good Luck!
Try duck tape !
One time I was at a carshow with my dad. I don't know what happened but I accidently ripped the tab off our last diaper and my dad was like oh let's just tape it on. He went into the trunk and found electrical tape and it worked great til we got home.
When my son went through this stage we used, you guessed it, duct tape. Works like a charm.
And please don't listen to people saying your child is ready for potty training. That may or may not be the case - each child is different. He will let you know when he's ready.
Good luck! :)
Keep a onesie on him...he won't be able to undo the snaps.
My daughter did this when she was that little and we like other moms have said put the diaper on backwards and then put pj's on that snapped at the top with the zipper . Hope this helps
My brother has triplets and one of them had that problem. He used duck tape.
