Joint Party for Boys 15 Years Apart

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions on how to do a joint party. I have 2 sons who share the same exact birthday but are 15 years apart. My oldest will be 16 and the baby will of course be one. Just not sure how to go about it. We really can't afford to do two parties. My oldest doesn't mind having a joint party and said the theme is not big deal.

What can I do next?

I would let the 16 year old choose the theme and everything. Then, around cake cutting time, have a little mini cake and do the 1 year old's little cake moment, then the 16 year old can have his cake moment.

As long as the oldest doesn't care then go for it! I would go with solid colors, seeing how they are both boys that will be easy, invite family and friends, good food, some cake and your golden. I would probably go with NO theme...just colors and I am seeing a sea of helium balloons in the shapes of 1's and 6's :)

Happy Birthday to your boys!

Will you be having a lot of guests, or mostly a family deal? We would probably let the older pick his cake, and make a cupcake for the 1 year old. Pretty much the whole thing will be lost on the younger one, so I wouldn't worry too much about theming it. Unless, your older son is into cars or something. You can do muscle cars, etc for him, and something cute like matchbox cars for the younger.

Is the driving age still 16? It sounds like a stupid question but honestly, I don't know...with all the changes in legislation I know they are making it harder now! Anyway, I was going to say you should do a car theme! So fun! It'd be fun, albeit cheesy for the older one and perfect for the little one. But, it really depends on who is going to be there, etc. Honestly, if you can't afford both I would suggest giving the older boy a party with a couple close friends and then just doing cake and presents with the family for the 1 year old. I am all about parties, believe me, but it might mean more to your older son on this milestone to have something special.

If you still decide on doing it together I'd probably make it so the older boy and his friends can have the inside and play video games or whatever and do outdoor playing and food for the little one and his friends. Congrats on 2 big milestones and have fun!

I would focus my attention on the 16yr old's bday and do a simple family gathering of cake (home made) for the one yr old. This is a bday that teens male/female look forward to. He may be trying to down play the whole thing, but I think it would be best if he had the attention ... no offense but he only has a few more "at home" bdays left, let him have the "glory" if you will. You are the only one who will remember that the younger one's first bday was a small simple gathering at home.

Don't do a joint party! Make a fuss over the 16-yr-old! He'll be out of the house soon and then you can make a big deal over the young one. The young one won't know the difference. The older one has probably had to make some big adjustments lately, so honor that, if you want my opinion....

The only important theme I see in a birthday is love . Surrounded by people who love and support you and want to celebrate another year of you . 2 of my children have a birthday very close and we celebrated their 1st and 10th birthday together. They had a cake with their names on it . It was really special to just be a family ( grandma, uncles, aunts, cousins, siblings, a few close friends) together marveling over how much these two mean to us. My 10 year old picked the dinner grandma made which is tradition for everyone's birthday, and they each got a few gifts. No money wasted on fancy plates and napkins that get thrown away. We had some balloons for decoration. We've gone back to simplicity with birthdays and we love it. Turning 1 and 16 are special milestones so maybe have a wishing box for both children and everyone can write a wish for them , a few words of wisdom or reflection. Congratulations to you. Have fun and don't feel you have to go broke doing it.

The 1 yr old isnt going to remember, or care much, except in pictures someday, so have the 16yr olds party and bring out cake for both, and get lots of pictures of both, and then go back to the 16 yr olds party. Baby can go take a nap. You can do this for a couple years and slowly work more into the toddlers birthday and by then the older son will be off to college or wont want moms parties anyway. Youve got it made!

Wow, my first thought is that is pretty cool...

Well the theme could be "Milestones!" The big Sweet 16, is he getting his driver's licenses? and the Big 1! Are you having family or family and friends??? I think you could incorporate both actually... Have separate tables for gifts, and two different cakes of course... I think the key is to make sure the 16 year old feels special, the 1 year old will not remember, only see pictures...

Congrats Momma!

I have 4 kids who have birthdays within 3 weeks of each other. Since my little girl was born and all the kids were living with us we have always celebrated their birthdays with the same shared party. We try to have special cakes etc. for them but besides that it seems to work out well.

I would also try to spent special time with each of them outside of the party, just so they can have that special individual time with you.

Good Luck!
