Job Opportunity-what Would You Do?

I am close to graduating, and started an intern position this semester. I have been given the opportunity to intern with the same company next semester. Apparently, the head of another department has noticed my work, and has asked that I intern with them next semester. The department I am in now also wants to keep me, so I get to make the decision which way I want to go.

The department I am currently with is great. I LOVE the work, and am seriously considering continuing my education in that direction after I graduate. I have learned a lot, and there is still plenty TO learn. I get along really well with my co-workers, and my supervisor is really good about being cooperative with my school/child scheduling needs.

The other department is related, but different. It doesn't appeal to me as much on a personal level, but I do think the experience in that field would contribute positively if I do wind up perusing the first field as a career. The new department is in a field that will only grow in the future, and goes hand-in-hand with the first one.

The pay and hours would be the same whichever way I go.

What would you do? Stay with the department that seriously appeals to you, or spend som time in the other department that would give you valuable diversified experience?

What can I do next?

Can you go to the first dept for a full time job when you're done with school? If so, stick with that one. They may tell you that you can come back but I've seen people go elsewhere for the experience and the people in the first dept typically resent it deep down. They won't believe you aren't on some level looking for something better. If you're going to move on to another company, if this experience can really help you do your job better in the first type of department work, then try it. But it really needs to obviously help you do a better job or people will think it's an excuse to try something and find "better". At least that's how it's usually viewed where I work. We want people who are super committed bc we have plenty of applicants.

Sounds like you need to just listen to your heart. Talk to the boss of the one where you intern now. Ask them if they think the experience gained in that other department is worthy of your time, that you want to know how it intermingles and helps one have a better idea.

I would probably go and get the additional experience. It will give you a better resume. I am sure you will still be able to go back to the first department if you choose but who knows if you'll even want to. I think most department's will "get" that you are trying to get experience in different areas, if you return to the first they may even appreciate your added experience.

I tend to buy quality over quantity. I have invested in about seven outfits to wear to work for winter, seven for spring/fall, and a few for extremely hot weather. I've gone to simple colors for shoes that complement the majority of clothes to avoid having dozens of pairs of shoes. I have two pairs of jeans and four pairs of shorts and four winter nightgowns. The biggest update I have made is I bought quick-drying hiking and travel clothes because we went to Europe last year and only took one piece of luggage as we traveled by train. I do have a bit of choice for nice tops for work, somehow, over the years, so I've stopped buying clothes except to replace my neutral turtlenecks that go underneath most of the outfits.

I just took inventory over the summer with an eye on the environment. Less is more. Just one look at resale shops, Value Village donated clothes shops and articles on the internet about what happens to T-shirts that are donated to charity organizations in the US and then are sold and sent to Africa to be sold there, and any thinking person also becomes minimalistic.

My hub buys his work shirts second hand because they'll get dirty anyway, and his job is tough on his shoes, too, but those are important for safety, so he buys those new. Dress clothes, he has had clothes for twenty years. Luckily we bought classic styling so that they can still be worn.

Now my 8-year-old. . .buying clothes to keep up with growth spurts has been a good time. I cannot believe how much bigger she is this year from last year.

I want to be 70 miles or more from Wal-Mart, you lucky person!

Happy Thanksgiving.

Ooh that's hard. Since I don't know what you are doing, it's hard to answer. My first thought it to stay in the work you love.

You could discuss your dilemma with the department, and see if they have any good suggestions. Your interest in personal growth can only be viewed positively by this company.

Congratulations! It sounds like you have worked hard.

I'm letting personal bias get in the way here, since I'm quite unhappy with my current work situation - but I would say, if you love your work, and your boss is great, don't let that go. That's very hard to come by. Good luck with your decision!
