I got an IUD just over a year ago after my twins were born. I figured it was perfect because I couldn't forget to take it. A couple of months after I had the IUD in, and my twins were 4 months old I develpoed a mild depression, which was finally corrected with antidepressents (diagnosed postpartum depression). Well I have been reading up on the hormonal IUD on some other side effects like pain and bad cramps, and that it can be associated with depression. I was hoping to hear other experiences with IUD and possible complications.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had it removed in early Dec. Other than an abnormally long period I have been better. The cramping is pretty much gone, but as I am still on a hormonal birth control, I haven't truly seen much difference with the depression.

I'm having my Mirena taken out next week! Just doesnt "feel right" -like its working against me not helping me. I had the Paraguard first - hormon less- and Hated that one worse. I cant loose any weight, feeling Down, moody, just not myself. I'm really hoping that once this comes out, I'll bounce back !! GL hope you feel better soon :-)

Yeah that happened to me too! The depression started about right when yours did. I didn't even think of the mirena being the culprit till about a year later. I also got several other side effects from having it as well. I gained about ten lbs, my periods lasted for about two weeks every month which caused me to be anemic, and the depression/moodiness. I started to suspect the mirena after a year of having it in. I got it taken out, and a couple weeks later I was back to normal. It just didn't click right with my body I guess.

I didn't like my Mirena. I had some side effects (nothing as terrible as the things I read online) but I gained at least 20 lbs (boo hoo), and developed a mild thyroid problem. Some things came on gradually so I didn't even notice them until after I had the IUD taken out--like a decrease in sex drive. I'm honestly so happy to have a cycle back. I barely bled at all in the year and a half that I had the IUD. I know many women would love that, but it felt weird not to have that monthly shedding. I appreciate my period more now :)
