Itchy Throat - Allergy?

For the past few weeks, I have been having an itchy throat on and off. The itching/irritation starts usually after eating something or drinking coffee and it seems to be mostly on the right side of my throat. Although I take my allergy medication (Allegra), I still have postnasal drip, watery eyes, ear pressure and running/congested nose, so my sense is that this throat irritation/itching may be due to the hay fever season.

I would really appreciate if you could advise whether this irritation/itching could be related to my hay fever allergies and perhaps suggest anything that could alleviate it.

Thanks a lot in advance.

So What Happened?

I have just realized that I posted a similar question in Dec 2013, I am so busy that I have forgotten I had similar issues back then. However, your answers/suggestions are highly appreciated.
My dr. believes this is allergies related and advised me to increase the Allegra daily intake. I guess it affects more the right side as I feel more postnasal on that side. Plus, my right nostril is runny while my left one is a little congested. And of course, when I have more drainage on the left side, it is that part of the throat that itches.
In terms of OTC meds, I am breastfeeding and do not have lots of choices: Allegra, Claritin and perhaps Zyrtec. Claritin does not work for me.

I could have written this post until I discovered nasalcort. It is an over the counter allergy nose spray. NOT like afrin. I was taking allegra twice a day and now I just do one squirt in each nostril in the morning. I was also addicted to again. Now I don't use it at all. It takes about a week to fully take effect. It's worth a try since you are so miserable.

If it was allergies it would not affect just half of your throat or only happen when you eat or drink. Maybe start by switching allergy meds, it doesn't look like whatever you are taking is working anyway. Good luck.

We've been told that for allergy and sinus issues, you need the holy trifecta: Flonase, Afrin and allergy meds.

Good luck!

I find that in the spring Claritin works best for me but it doesn't help me at all in the fall.
Zyrtec works best for me in the fall but not in the spring.
Different seasons means different pollen and I have to switch meds accordingly.
Allegra use to help a bit years ago but does nothing for me now.
Try some of the other OTC allergy meds (one at a time) and see if it makes a difference.
Sipping ome echinacea tea and/or chicken soup can't hurt and is very soothing.

I get seasonal allergies and my two main symptoms are itchy throat and ears, and ear pressure. Summer and fall are the worst for me. I take a store brand allergy pill once a day and it clears right up.

Absolutely could be because of allergies. That being said, your meds are simply masking symptoms and not doing a very good job either. You need to get to the root of the problem. Allergies are reactions to things that our bodies should be able to handle...God given grass, flowers, dogs, etc. If you are attacked by allergies, then your immune system is not working well at all. There are multiple ways of boosting your immune system. Detoxing your home, taking an multivitamin that is absorbable, and if you still need help, there are additional supplements that will jump start your body to make the antibodies it needs. I used to wake up to a hot wet compress to get my eyes open in the morning. I know have an inside dog and have my windows open! Detoxing is simply and can be inexpensive if you do it the way I did.

Hope this helps!

I take a daily allergy pill, have an inhaler and just recently discovered that a nasal rinse once a day has been helping tremendously! It is kind of weird at first but now I am a pro at it! I think you should try it! it works!

If a food is triggering your symptoms you probably need testing. It will tell you if you need to avoid certain foods.

I take Allegra daily but this time of year I suffer a bit. Try taking a Mucinex D twice a day. Get it from BEHIND the pharmacy counter. That's the good stuff. You can use it in addition to allergy meds.
