Itching on Breast - Maybe TMI for Some !

Hi moms -

I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue. My nipple on one breast has been itching quite a bit since before Christmas. Sometimes my breast will itch toward my armpit but none of the rest itches. No discharge, no swelling, and no discoloration. There is a small round spot under the nipple on the areola that is kind of rough / flaky. About the size of a dime. I did go see a partner doctor for my doctor (she was booked) and see didn't see anything odd. My mammogram is coming up with my annual checkup so I will get those done. The doctor that checked me didn't want to do an ultrasound right now. My regular doctor will check everything also. I completely trust my doctor. I trust the doctor that checked it but because she is not my doctor I have a little worry. Of course all kinds of weird ideas are running through my head and I try to not do that. My question is - has anyone experienced this before and what ended up happening ?
Thanks for any insight you might have !

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the answers ! I had my annual check up and mammogram. The mammo was clear and my doctor didn't think it was anything but went ahead and sent me to a dermatologist to make sure. The dermatologist felt it was just eczema but wanted a biopsy to make certain. The biopsy was clear and it was just eczema ! Yea ! Alot of relief !

I have had the same itching. In fact, I scratched it so much I got a rash! It lasted about a day and then stopped. I'm going in for my annual mamogram soon as well.

Wishing us both the best of luck!

No no. Don't wait for your mammogram. Go to the doctor now. I really am not trying to be over-the-top here, but I really think you need to know that there is a type of breast cancer that is FAST moving and deadly that can manifest itself like this. You need to get to your gyn now. Make it a sick appointment so that you can get in.

Please don't wait on this.

Please, please, do not wait for your mammogram. First thing in the morning, go have one done. My aunt had similar symptoms and wasted a lot of time with dermatologists, her regular doctor, trying different anti-fungal medications, etc. Turns out she had a rare but very fast-moving form of breast cancer. If she had caught it even a few months before, her surgeon could have removed it. As it was, it had metastasized. She spent 5 years fighting for her life, and passed away 2 years ago.

Please, I don't mean to scare you, but go immediately for a mammogram. I hope that it's just a fungal skin infection, but do not delay getting it checked out.

It sounds like eczema. I am suffering horribly from it right now -- probably because of the weather. Mine is the worst where I wear my bra. I have taken to going bra-less and wearing cotton tank tops when I am not out in public. It is helping a little. Good luck to you. Maybe a dermatologist can prescribe something for you.

My best guess would be a fungus and/or a yeast infection.
Try an anti fungal cream on it.
When you take a bath add 1 cup plain yogurt to your bath water - your skin will love it.

Could be eczema, could be a fungal or yeast infection. However, i suffer from psoriasis, and this sounds similar. I'd either check with your regular doctor again or see if you could get referral to a dermatologist.

Just my two cents worth, but I'm not a doctor. :)

Please do not assume this is just a skin thing. It may indeed BE only that but first please rule out breast issues.

As someone else noted: There is a rare but serious form of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, that often does not show any lumps but has symptoms such as redness of the skin, burning sensations (which could be mistaken for itching and vice versa). Get your ob/gyn (not your regular doctor, see someone who checks breasts every day!) to examine you. IBC is very, very serious. It's also pretty rare so don't go nuts, just get checked to rule it out rather than going first to treat this with creams.

The fact that the itching seems to be in a distinct line toward your armpit, where your lymph nodes are, could indicate an infection since lymph nodes act funky when the body is infected. If not a skin condition or IBC, this could be a sign of an infected duct in your breast or something like that.

You said you saw a doctor but was it a gynecologist or breast specialist or just a general practitioner? Nothing against GPs, but anything to do with breasts I take straight to my ob/gyn who examines them every day.

It sounds as though this may be a matter for a dermatologist. There are a few different kinds of skin fungus which could cause this; tinea versicolor is a common one; ringworm is another ( a nice round shape is often a hallmark and it does get flaky). I'd try using lotriminAF (it's an antifungal) and see if that helps. The tinea versicolor also has to do with yeast, and might require more than the LotriminAF, but it is treatable.

Again, I'm not a doctor, but that would be the route I would try; use the lotrimin AF for a week and then, call the dermatologist.

Mine too but I have horribly dry and sensitive skin especially this time of year. Sounds gross but it helps me to only shower every other day as to not dry my skin out too much. I use very mild organic baby soap as not to irritate my skin. After I take my bra off there is always a strong urge to just scratch...
