Issues with Pacifiers and Sleep

My 4 month old sleeps in a bassinet next to my bed. He is normally a good sleeper and is beginnig to sleep through the night only waking at about 5 am for a bottle and then falling asleep again. I thought he was at the point where he could begin sleeping in his crib, but lately he has been waking up because his pacifier has been falling out of his mouth. I get up, put it in and then go back to sleep. This could happen 4 times a night. This is the only reason he has been waking up during the night.

What can I do to get him to sleep without the pacifier so I can move him into his own room?

What can I do next?

Oh man, I remember the days of having to hold that pacifier as my youngest slept in his bassinet beside my bed. What a misery. He grew out of it at about 6 months. Actually about the same time that I started giving him cereal. Good luck.

My little boy went through this. We had him in a bassinet/our bed for about 2 weeks and then he was in his crib. It seems like it a phase. Blake did that for about a month and then was fine. I think it is an adjustment to not waking up for feedings and being in the crib for the first time. My son was always a sleeper, but it could also be the start of teething, that is when Blake did that.

We found a great pacifier called a Wubbanub. It has a small stuffed animal attached to the pacifier, so it makes it easier for your baby to grab it if it falls out. I found it at BabyDagny.com. Here's a little hint. If you create a baby registry online and a certain amount of your friends look at the registry (they don't have to buy), then BabyDagny will send you a Wubbanub for free! My baby LOVES his! And he has been sleeping sound through the night in his own crib for months now.

I have a three month old son and he has been in his crib since he was about a month and a half. We just were having problems with him waking up in the middle of the night just for a pacifier, until recently when we bought a little music projector. It is the coolest thing. It plays music and projects a bear and stars at the ceiling. It has a sensor on it that when the baby starts to fuss, it turns on and plays music. It keeps my little entertained enough to where he falls back to sleep. Try it. He might like it and he might enjoy his crib. Good Luck. Oh by the way...i found the projector thing at Walmart. It was only $25.

If you stop putting in the pacifier he will eventually find his thumb or learn to soothe himself to sleep w/o a pacifier. It takes time but if you are consistant the behavior will change in a quicker time period. Right now there is no reason to change for him because you there for him to replace the pacifier during the night...
Good Luck!!

Hi,

I was right there with you many years ago. Both my kids had the pacifier and there were nights with my daughter that I wanted to duct tape it to her mouth just so I could sleep. First of all, it never came to that!! Just sounded great after being woken up every hour for a couple of nights. Personally, I would move your son to his crib in his room and then let him self sooth. It might take a couple of nights, but it will be better in the long run. You need your sleep especially for your older boy and/or work. Eventually, he'll gain the ability to find it and put it back in his mouth himself or learn to sleep without it. I used to leave 3 or 4 in the crib so they would find them in easy reach.

Good luck!

Our second son also went through this. We keep as many as possible in his crib with him. But until they learn to either do without, or wake up enough to look around for it, I would just not be very quick to respond. Give him a few minutes and see if he starts to cry or if he'll go back to sleep or find his thumb.
Best of luck,
Jen

This is exactly the reason I came on this website today. my baby is 5 months and she wakes up for it anywhere from 2 to 6 times a night. People tell me to wait and see what happens if I don't go in there, but I don't want her to fully wake up by crying. I don't know what to do either.

First -- you need to move him to his own room. If he's sleeping right next to you, you are going to respond much more quickly. Then buy a whole bunch of extra pacifiers so that he can find them. Give him time to self sooth without the pacifier or to find the pacifier. Wait to respond to him until you think "uh oh" he's waking up too much - and then go. Most of the time, they find the pacifiers if you throw a whole bunch in the crib. Also, sometimes they outgrow the pacifier and fall back to sleep. I've had one child who self soothed within a night or two (thumb sucking -- but grew out of that quickly enough -- thank God).......and the other two loved their pacifier until age one and the other until age two. My view is to let them have the pacifier after age one for sleeping/nap purposes only........then around age two -- even the sleep aid should go.......but that's been my own experience. I know moms who took the pacifier at age one and everything was fine. That's a whole other topic, though -- pacifier use:) (my cousin allowed his kids to have them until they were 4! they are now 10 and older and thank goodness they are normal & no braces and so forth).
