Is Paying for a Monitored Alarm System Really Worth It?

We've been paying about $35 a month for years now for a Brinks monitored alarm system. I'm starting to wonder if it's really worth it.... In 7 years, I've only been called once about the alarm being set off while I was away. And I'd forgotten to pay our "alarm permit fee" to the city of Fort Worth for the year, so the police wouldn't come in response to call from Brinks -- I had to call them myself. And really, Brinks calls you first, then the police, so it's not like they're going to catch anyone in the act, since the noise of the alarm would most likely scare anyone off. SO, my question is, wouldn't the noise be enough?? Do I really need to pay for a monthly monitoring service even if I did get a small break on homeowner's insurance? Thanks!

What can I do next?

If you never have to be home alone, you may be happy without it being monitored.
We had an armed robbery, home-invasion. Since we were outside when they first attacked us, the alarm probably wouldn't have helped us. But having it now makes me feel more secure especially when I am home alone. Also if one of the boys leaves the door open when they leave and it blows open, the alarm company calls and we can decide if we think it's that and go shut it or if we should have the police come.
We are with Smith Thompson and I think they are great. They only charge about half of what your are paying.
Good luck and God bless.

We have an alarm system and it has the option of the door chime. I love that becuase I know when one of my children has opened a door if I am not with them in the part of the house they are in. I also like the security at night when my husband is traveling to know that I will know if something happens. I feel a sense of security at night and so do my kids.

1st you are paying way to much with brinks!!!! Which is now Broadview (they lincense the name Brinks was not renewed). No matter who you go with your service of monitoring is the same! Also with Brinks and ADT you are paying for the commericals, advertising etc. Like you mentioned about your permit. It is required by the state to have a permit. Most police will charge you $50-100 each "false" alarm. Also the minute you would decide not to have it... something will happen. As the saying goes. I am in the Keller area and right now the big thing is ppl are knocking in the back door while people are home in the middle of the day. Holding a gun to them and taking any equipment (laptops etc) that they can get their hands on....

I am a single mom and sell alarm systems on the side for extra money. Depending on what you like equipment wise I have rates as low as $19.95 a month. I am with ASG Security which is 7th largest and Nationwide.

Please feel free to contact me as I can help save you lost of money and possibly get you some free equipment as well depending on your package.

We had a home invasion in August after living in our home in a quiet neighborhood for over 5 years. Fortunately none of us were home, so no one was hurt. We have an alarm system that triggered and after the company was unable to contact us (they only had the home phone in their system) they contacted the police. The noise was not enough to keep them from taking all they could before the police arrived 15 minutes later. Had the alarm not been monitored, we would have not known about the break-in and could have returned home to the burgulars. I'd strongly recommend keeping the system monitored during these hard economic times because folks are desperate and I'd never think something like what happened to us would take place in our neighborhood.

Hi A.,
We had someone break into our home in a nice section of North Arlington about 15 years ago and our alarm system frightened off the robbers and the alarm company summoned the police. We would not have known they had broken in unless the alarm had woken us up and we don't know if they intended to do us bodily harm. We saw two people run off from our house while the alarm was blaring. It was very scary for our whole family. So for us, it is worth it to have the alarm system on and monitored. However, we use Summit Security and it is about $26/mo on a quarterly basis. Maybe you should do some comparison shopping on the price or ask Brinks for a competitive rate.
