Is It Worth Trying to Clean This Bottle?

Hi Moms -
Either my husband or I left a dirty bottle in the diaper bag for a matter of days or perhaps a week or more. It was super disgusting when we opened it. Is it worth trying to rehabilitate? I've soaked it in soapy water and am planning to boil it and all the parts for several minutes, but I'm wondering if even that is enough. I hate to waste what could be a perfectably acceptable bottle when sterilized, but I obviously don't want to risk my daughter's health.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Unless the bottle is made of gold and decorated with diamonds, I'd have thrown it right in the trash. When my kids were tiny, I found a sippy cup in my trunk that must have been there a week. I didn't consider trying to clean the cheese out of it, it went right into the trash. Sorry if that sounds wasteful.

I wouldn't use bleach in a plastic bottle. Bleach is really really hard to completely rinse out. But really hot soapy water will make it jsut fine. If the nipple is silicone and you can boil it I would. It will be perfectly safe to use as long as if doesn't have a bad odor.

Frankly, though, I would have just thrown it out already. My time is worth something too - how much does a new bottle cost these days?

I would throw it not. Not because of fear of hurting daughter's health... but because of the time involved.

My time = money and you will spend a lot of time and money trying to clean it. I learned a long time ago to pitch stuff like that when I found it. I've pitched many sippy cups, etc that I have found that were beyond stinky and dirty.

Is it plastic or glass? Plastic toss. Glass can be cleaned and sterilized.

Is it worth the cost of the soap, bleach, electricity or natural gas to heat the water, then washing the pan it was soaked in and then later on washed in. You'd also probably want to buy a new bottle brush.

All in all, it seems to me that the cost of cleaning a baby bottle that is this bad is more costly than simply buying a replacement next time you're at the store.

Unless of course it cost more than $5. Because heating water, paying for the dishsoap, and the added bleach to do all these things alone is more than a dollar.

No. I'd toss it. We're done with bottles but still lose a few lunch containers this way every year.

You don't have a bottle brush?
Brush it clean first then sterilize it.
It'll be fine.

there is no reason you cannot clean this bottle.. a soak in hot water and soap and run through the dishwasher.. all is good..

people are pretty quick to throw things away these days.. regardless of whether it is hard plastic or glass it is a solid surface and it can be cleaned and reused...

Frankly I am surprised by the answers on here. I had the same thing happen. Soaked it, boiled it and then ran through the dishwasher on the sanitize cycle. It is back in service. We have never had more bottles than necessary to get baby through a day of daycare:) It wouldn't have occurred to me to throw it away - that is money in the trash.

If it's truly nasty, I'd just get a new one. I threw out some moldy nipples when DD was an infant. Buying new was worth the peace of mind.

Years ago I found a bottle under the couch. Didn't know how long it had been there and the contents didn't move when I put the bottle upright. I threw it out because I didn't want to deal with it.

If you have soaked it and boiled it then you are good to go.

We have done this twice. We washed, sanitized and put the bottle back in service. We never bought more bottles than absolutely necessary so we needed all of our bottles. Why waste if you don't have to, right? Good luck whatever you decide.

What kind of bottle? Dr. Brown's or some other "fussy" kind of specialized bottle? If yes then I would do my best to save it. I would get rid of the nipple but you can wash and sterilize the bottle without any problems. Before we had a dishwasher we saved a few bottles from the depths of the diaper bag or the couch. When we had a dishwasher it was even easier since we didn't have to boil the water... the dishwasher automatically sterilizes.

If you go through cleaning it and it still smells sour then you can put some lemon or lime juice in it for a couple of hours to get it smelling fresh again.

If you don't feel like going through the effort, and it was an inexpensive bottle, then just replace it.
