My daughter just started preschool 2 weeks ago. at the end of the first week she got sick. Which I knew was going to happen and thats ok. It's been about a week or so and she still has a runny nose and a cough. The cough tends to be more in the morning when she wakes up. She seems to be feel besides those two things. Could be shes not sick and she has allergies. If she does have allergies do I take her to the doctor and when.

What can I do next?

I would talk about it with your pediatrician. My eldest daughter was the same way, and after many doctors visits we finally went to see an allergist. They tested her for many differant types of allergies and did an xray to check and see if her adnoids might be enlarged. Turned out she had several allergies to outdoor pollens, slight allergies to differant pets and enlarged adnoids. They also found out that she had asthma, that is what the cough was, the trigger being the outdoor pollens. We started her on allergy medication, an inhaler and removed her adnoids. She was almost 4 when this all transpired. She is now almost 12 and is on no medications. She has pretty much outgrown her allergies and asthma. Sounds very similar to what she had. Talk to her doctor.

It could be allergies. My daughter had these issues often her 1st year and we tried all kinds of things, but finally bought her a small air purifier with Hepa filter for her bedroom ($70)and ran it 24/7 and she hasn't had a cough or runny nose since (about 7 months ago). She usually had a runny nose about 40% of the time with a cough sometimes. When my daughter does get a cough from the bad air outside we put infant Vicks on her chest and bottoms of her feet and the cough usually goes right away. She could be sick, because she may have been exposed to all kinds of new germs at the preschool. Coughs can sometimes hang on for a week or two, but if the runny nose persists it could be a sinus infection.

This isn't medical advice but in my experience once they start any kind of school the whole family gets sick for months. It's probably a virus she picked up at preschool.

K.,
With our sons allergies if they aren't kept under control
we end up on antibiotics for sinus infections. So, yeah,
you might want her to be seen. If it is just a cold, the dr. always told us to wait 10 days, if it hadn't cleared out by then, then come in and get looked at. So, the choice is yours to make.

Hi there,
It's problably not allegies.. my sons both go to day care, and let me tell you, my 11 month old get sick once a month. It's terrible.. I thought he had allergies too because his runny nose and sneezes never seem to go away after hes is sick and the doctor said that its the day care... He doesnt have allergies.. runny noses and coughs can last a few weeks after a cold starts, and just when they start getting better, they get sick again... but the doctor said he will get sick less often when he gets older because it is bulking up his imune system... If you hear weezing when she breathes, then definatley get her checked out, that could be asthma... but it is hard to detect in younger children my doctors said...
well good luck and I hope your little one gets better.. It's an awful feeling when you cant make them better and have sleepless nights because they cant breath.. etc. etc.
ask her doctor at her next check up what she thinks.
Take care.

It seems too early to say - a cold can hang on for several weeks, but an allergy can go on and on and on. If she's never shown any signs of allergy before I'd think it was a cold and just wait and watch. She's probably coming up on her four year old well child visit in November, at that time you can ask the pediatrician what they think if you still have concerns. We can't give over the counter meds now with the new FDA recommendations, and even before, I noticed with my own allergic child that they never worked on toddlers very well anyway.

The one symptom I would not wait on, if you notice it, is wheezing or if you see your little one seeming to have any difficulty pulling in a breath (the hollow at the top of the chest will sink as they inhale, that is a symptom of asthma). If that should occur I would definitely contact the doctor.
