Irregularity in Period

Hello moms,

Sorry to be so graphic, but I'm really not so sure how to make it ungraphic. I have a 17 month old boy. Before I got pregnant my period used to be a 5 day period with the first few days being somewhat heavy and then tapering off. After giving birth when I got my period back, it's never been very much at all. Initially when I got it back I was still breastfeeding so I thought it was the hormones keeping it on the low. Now it's been 7 months since I stopped breasfeeding and I notice that my period is barely 2 days long and not too heavy at all. I'm just wondering if I should be concerned? I'm wondering if any one else has experienced this?
Thanks so much in advance for your responses.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone! This really helps. It's nice to know that things change and it's normal. I feel fine and healthy in general and I will bring it up with my OB/GYN when I see her for my annual check up. Thanks again!

Hey, don't sweat it. My period did the same thing after my first was born. My periods were very regular; a little heavy for the first two days and then tapering off. After baby they were only 2 or 3 days and fairly light too. And it stayed that way until my second baby.

So you don't have anything to worry about. It's totally normal.

Our bodies change a lot from having a baby. It could be jus tfine, but I would see your OBGYN to be sure. I had no period for 2 years after having my baby and it turned out I was extremely anemic. As soon as we got my iron levels back up, my period started again. Simple fix.

You did not mention if there was any change in birth control methods. This can have huge impact on your cycle.

The same thing is happening to me; it's been 5 months since I stopped breastfeeding and my short period could be described as heavy spotting at best. I asked my obgyn about it couple of weeks ago - she said it's completely normal (and that it shouldn't impect my ability to get pregnant again when we're ready to try for a sibling).

My period changed drastically after I got it back too. It seems to go on forever with no real heavy day. But I haven't been feeling any other ill effects, so I'm not worrying about it. You're body might still be regulating itself, or this might be a semi-permanent change.

I had the same thing happen to me and found out that I had endometriosis. Did it take you a while to get pregnant with your 17 month old? To this day my periods are like 1 1/2 days heavy...then hardly anything. I am blessed to have two children, one 17 and one 10 year old. It took over 5 years to get pregnant with my first one and the doctors told me after that, I would not have another..but 7 years later was pregnant with my second. It might be something you want to have your doctor check out.

My honest opinion is that this is a topic best discussed with your GYN. However, I will say that I used to experience very normal periods and then when I turned about 25 they went away all together. A meeting with my doctor revealed, in my situation, it was totally normal. Without a period I was still able to get pregnant twice, and quite quickly, and following my second pregnancy my period has returned...

best of luck!

Pregnancy does a lot of things to a woman's body and I wouldn't be concerned as long as there are no other symptoms, no pain, or any other physical symptoms that would indicate a problem. Just enjoy the blessing of a light period as long as it lasts. Most likely it will eventually come back as your hormones regulate, but it could be years, if you are lucky. When I was pregnant with my first child, I shrunk an inch and my feet grew a size lol. And I never got those back of course. I agree with the post that advised against mentioning to your gyn. All they will do is put you on artificial hormones that affect you and your baby, despite what they tell you. They are in the business to give you drugs, plain and simple. Just use your own judgement and intuition, it usually is right.

I have one daughter and have miscarried twice and my period has changed a little after each pregnancy. Nothing to worry about probably, but give your ob a call just to be sure.

I don't want to scare you but there are a few tests that your OB/GYN can do to assess your fertility. First, ask your OB/GYN to do a follicular count. Second, have your FSH levels tested. Most OB/GYNs do not study premature ovarian failure and thus it goes undiagnosed. At 36 I begin having irregular periods and was assured by my OB/GYN that all was normal. It was not. It took several years of self-education and a trip down infertility lane to really understand what was happening. Be proactive. I hope and pray that your case is different than mine. The advantage that you have is time.
Good luck.

Do you have alot of stress in your life? That seems to affect periods. I would check with the doctor.
