Hi Everyone,
Can any one give me some help with Intramuscular shots, I am looking for anything that may have made it easier on you while giving yourself the shots. My friend is having IVF done and is extremely nervouse about the shots and was wondering if anyone had any ideas or knows of anything that may have made it easier.
She is a major stress case as it is, and she is doing accupuncture, and therapy w/massage etc.
Any other ideas would be great.thnx

Hi B.,

We've done IVF four times now. Each time for the shots I used an ice pack (frozen pack of venison if we want honesty here) on the area for 5-10 minutes. My husband always did the shots for me, I never did them myself (I'm way too chicken!). He always did a great job, only a couple of times did he ever hit a nerve that I felt. It's very important that after she does the injection to massage the area where she did the shot. This helps to massage the progesterone oil into her muscle. She should alternate hips each night for the injection and if at any time she starts to feel as though it feels hard in that area, like a huge knot, she should apply a hot pack on it and massage the area really well. It means the progeterone is not absorbing where it should be (and we don't want that!).

Good luck to her!!

i always did my own shots and for me a huge part was mind over matter. the advice given is great...do it where the pockets would be and its very very important to put all your weight on the side you are not giving the shot on...take all weight off shot side. relax that leg. deep deep breaths. i always did it very very slow, which is not what they say to do but it worked for me. i used a mirror so i could see...it was a bit hard to get the hang of it but no big deal.

also put a warm towel over the shot site for a few mins after. the leg will be sore :(

if you let your mind run wild its worse. relax and take your time is my best advice.

good luck

If you give them around the area where a back pocket on pants would be, then stand with the leg bent on the side where you'll give the shot. Do some deep breathing to relax and stab the needle in with one quick, confident motion during an exhale. This should help stave off some of the discomfort if you're tensed when you receive the shot. Afterwards, gently massage the area. Probably a lot of the shots won't be intramuscular. The others are pretty easy to give right into a place like your belly and you can use ice before you cleanse the area to help numb it. If she's very nervous, it may help to have calming music playing and hold her partner's hand. Best of luck to her.
