Information on Double Strollers

I currently have an almost 3 1/2 year old and am pregnant with my second baby. My son will turn 4 about a month after the baby is born. He weighs about 30 punds now. I am looking for information on whether or not a double stroller will be worth the money. I have done a lot of research on them and can't seem to figure out if it will be worth it. My husband works a lot so I will be with the kids by myself a lot. There are also a lot of walking areas where I live and I will be walking my older son to preschool. Any advice I can get would be great. Advice on good strollers would be helpful also. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I have a 3 year old and 12 month old. My mom got me the sit n' stand and so far it has worked for us. I would love to have a double stroller BOB but that would not work for trips to the mall. My 3 year old is very active and like to walk most of the time but still loves the option to sit or stand when we are out for a long time.

When I was pregnant with my second, my husband and I decided to get a "Sit and Stand" stroller. My older daughter was 2 1/2 when we had the baby, and it has been nice. She can walk with us or sit or stand behind the baby. She enjoys it as well.

I have a Joovy Caboose sit and stand stroller (and have since my daughter was born) for my 4 year old son and 18 month old daughter. It was nice when my boy was younger and I had the baby in the seat. We still use it fairly often, but now my daughter wants to walk everywhere and it ends up being a bag and coat holder for a lot of our walks. My son still likes to ride on the back (he prefers sitting to standing most of the time. He's never fit in the front- since he was nearly 2 1/2). I would think, given the age of your children, that you wouldn't need a double stroller. You can use a baby carrier and pull a wagon or take your older kid's bike or trike with you...

If you decide to get a stroller, the pros of the Joovy are: nice and light, easy to manuever, fairly easy to fold, five point harness in front seat, baby carrier, you can buy a drink cup holder for the handle. The cons: the canopy and snack trays, though removable, are a HUGE pain in the @@@ to take off!; you can't really use the front restraint without using it as the 5 point harness, and the front seat is pretty small: my daughter's legs hang over the bottom of the narrow footrest and there's not a ledge for her to rest her feet on. Also, the seat doesn't recline very far, so if she falls asleep in the stroller she slumps.

Hi, I had the sae issue, and my husband kept asking why we needed ANOTHER one. I love the Joovy Sit 'n' Stand! It even fold us nicely, and if your older one needs to sleep if you are out....you can (CAREFULLY!!!!) Put your car seat side ways on the handle (it's acutally pretty secure ONLY if you are RIGHT THERE!) and the older child can sit in the front. I know it's not recommended, but we did that at Disneyland when my oldest needed a nap. Baby trend also makes one! Good luck.

I have a 11 month old and a 3 1/2 year old and I could not live without my Sit n stand Lx stroller. Everywhere we go people ask where I bought it. It allows you to adapt the front to use with an infant car seat/carrier and the older child can sit in a regular seat in the back, use the jump seat or stand. It's a tandem, so it fits through small spaces unlike double joggers. I cannot stress just how much we LOVE this stroller! I got mine at Target, but you can check Craig's list or Ebay as well. It cost about 170-180 new, but it's a worthwhile investment!

Hope this helps

I recommed the sit and stand stroller.......that way the older child has the option of getting out and walking (which is great training), but if he gets tired, can hop on and either stand or sit and rest while you go at a faster speed. They're also less bulky than your typical double stroller.

As far as going somewhere like Target or the grocery store you wouldn't need a double stroller because you would just use the cart they have at the store. If you are walking to and from school more than just a block away daily maybe you should invest in a double. I have a double-Evenflo stroller from Target that was not a bad deal. One seat is higher than the other, both recline, lightweight compared to some, only 1 tray. (Side by side doubles would be impossible in a department store.) I only take it when I go to the mall, on long walks, and to all day events like fairs or Disneyland, ect. I would use it more to go on walks, but I've been working full time. I did use it quite a bit more when my youngest was an infant than now (always putting her mouth on things, trying to teeth on the shopping cart-gross). It is nice to have but not necessarily a necessity (It does save the arms though).

Save your money!!! I had my 2nd child when my son was 2 years 3 months old and he only used the double stroller for a short time. All he wants to do is walk when we are out so the double stroller ended up being a purse and bag holder. Also most double strollers are very hard to manuver. If you are going to purchase one I would buy the tandem ones ~ where the older kid can either sit or stand.
Good luck!

I have a three 1/2 year old and a baby due in two weeks. I got the Graco double stroller that allows the older one in front, up to 50 pounds, and the infant car set on the back untill he can sti in the back seat too. It's great, and contrary to what other mothers have told me, easily manueverable and easy to fold up. check the graco web site. It was expensive though. $250 I think.

I would highly reccomed the Sit-And-Stand. My daughter was about 2 1/2 when my son was born and we stuggled with spending too much on a double stroller since she was using one sometime and not using one on shorter trips. With the Baby Trend Sit-And-Stand the older child faces you and can still be buckled in or they can stand facing forward and there are straps behind them to keep them safe. It made my daughter feel like a big girl. It also has a good storage area that is fairly easy to access. The front seat has a tray and has a two position back and also comes with an attachment to use with infant seats. Unlike some double strollers it is still easy to stear when there is only one child in it. Both of my children are pretty big (height and weight, not over weight) and it still met our needs. I used this stroller for quite a while and loved it. It was money well spent.

I do have a sit and stand and really like it, but my son is only 2. I didn't get on with my second child, my oldest was 4 and over 40 lbs. I liked the umbrella stroller, and I also had a sling. That worked out the best. I put the baby in a sling for almost a year and had hands free for the 4 year old. My boys loved the sling, and they can be in it for a very long time.

Hi A.,

I'm in a similar sutuation as you too! I a SAHM with an almost 3-year old and another one almost here. We've been looking at double stollers too. There is a real nice sit and ride stroller at One Step Ahead. See link below. I am also looking for a double jogging stroller that is not 2-wide, but 2 deep! If you hear of anything good, please share! thanks and good luck!

My son was not yet 2 when my daughter was born, and a double stroller was indispensible. But when he was 4 we found that it wasn't as useful anymore. We then went back to the single stroller and put a Buggy Board on the back for him to stand on. So the recommendations for the sit and stand stroller for you are probably right on.
As for the expense of it, I rationalized it like this: The money spent on the stroller was definitely worth how it made my life so much easier. Also, there is a great market out there for good-condition, used strollers. So once you figure out the type/model that you want, look on eBay and Craigslist for a better deal, and then resell it in a year or two to recoup some of the cost.
By the way, the double stroller we used was a Maclaren side-by-side. After trying them all out in the store, I decided I would rather push a wide load than a bus. Maclarens are among the narrowest around, and it was perfect for us--no problems at any of the stores we went to, even department stores.
Best Wishes!

Hi A.,
I also have 2 children, and since your son will be 4, he still may want to be part of the stroller ride, just because the baby is in the stroller, but not all the time, and I have to tell you, I hate pushing a double stroller with one kid in it. It dosn't push straight. My advise would be to get a nice single stroller. At OneStepAhead.com, they have an attatchment that you can clip on to the back of the single stroller so that your oldest can stand while you push, or the Sit and Stand Stroller also found at that online store. I love that website, because it grows with your childrens needs. They have neat things. Good quality and good prices.

I am having a similar issue right now. My baby girl is due in August, and my son will be 3 years and 4 months then. He already weighs 34 pounds and he isn't even 3 yet! I know that he will not sit in the regular double stroller, so I know that is not worth it for us. I have considered the Sit n Stand ones, but some of the reviews I read are negative. People say that when the infant seat is attached to the front that the older child can't sit down. I have also read that the seat is not comfortable for the older child.
I haven't made a decision yet either, but I'm curious to see what sort of responses you get.

I believe double strollers have a weight limit, but Im not sure. My boys are closer in age, so I did use a double stroller for them. I do believe it depends on the size of your son.

Hi A.!

Yea, I would think that trying to "shop" for a double stroller would be hard now-a-days because there is so much to choose from.

I absolutely LOVE my double stroller. It's just the Jogging kind, but it has SAVED me so many times.

When we went to Disneyland, Marine World, etc.. my 10 year old could even sit and rest in it! My youngest is now 5 and I won't get rid of it! I hardly use it anymore, but I know I would regret it.

The things that I loved about my stroller are:
It folds up easy and FITS perfectly in my van. The seats in the stroller "recline" for when they were little and fell asleep. There is SOOO much leg room, so for family trips you can fit your older daughter until she's 12! Easy to clean. The fabric dries so fast that I can hose the whole thing off!

Anyway, that's my opinion for you. Hope it narrows down your choices :o)

Good Luck!

I would recommend a Babytrend sit & stand stroller. It has a normal front seat that you can also buy the matching baby trend car seat that snaps into it or once baby #2 is old enough can sit in the seat. The back part of it has a little bench & platform that your older son can either sit or stand holding on to the frame of the stroller. I love mine! I have 4 kids my youngest being 1 next week. My 4 & 6 yr old will sometimes take turns on who gets to ride in the back of the stroller.
