Hi everyone. Just wondering if there anyone had advise on how to help relieve a 5 month old with a nasty cold and cough. She is not running a fever and her mucous is clear, so I know it is viral not bacterial. Since they recalled all the cold remedies for infants, I don't think I should use them although I did with all my other children. Anyway, any advise or home remedy would be greatly appreciated, the night are oh so long if you know what i mean. The poor thing can't breathe. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I used the rest of the little cold medicine I had at home, a humidifier, and as much as she hated it, suctioned her nose and she is fine now! I hated to see her sick for Chritmas but at least she is too young to know. Thank you all once again for all the advice.

Have you tried the vicks vapor rub for infants. My neice had to use it on her 3month old and i worked great to clear her out especially at night.

We found a tearless Johnson's methol bubble bath helps too. Just let them play as long as they like. Then after, we would use qtips to help clean out as much of his nose as possible. And don't put them to bed right after the bath. The humidity and menthol will make things start draining. Better for it to drain out their nose or down their throat than for them to lay down and have it drain into their ears. Best of luck, Jen

Baby vicks is safe to use as well as bathing in the Johson's or Gerber vapor bath. You can use saline and a nasal aspirator to help clear the secretions from the nose. I have also heard people use baby vicks on the bottom of the feet, covered with socks at night to help with the cough. Hope this helps. Hope she feels better soon.

You need to take your little one to the Doctor. If you do not have Insurance go to the local health Dept.

They recalled them because people were overdosing their kids. They were providing more medication than what was recommended. I spoke with my pediatrician and pharmacist. If you have any infant cold medicine left, I would use it. Just follow the dosing recommendations provided by your pediatrician. That said, Vics makes a great humidifier that is mess free and effective (mist humidifiers need to be cleaned daily or else mold grows in the water base). I also let my baby sleep in her swing orwith her bed elevated.

I use Sambucol with my daughter. It's a combination of elderberry and echinacea. It's a natural anti viral. You can get it at any health food store.

The cold remedies aren't dangerous, the people administering the remedies who didn't follow dosage directions were the problem. Since some use drops and others use cups etc etc you have to read and make sure you are giving the proper amounts.
Anyway, I would place a pillow under her mattress so her head is elevated relative to her feet....better breathing when lying down that way. A humidifier in her room will help. The vicks rub on her chest will bring some relief. If all else fails, let her sleep on your shoulder with your head elevated so you and she can sleep.
Good luck!

Rub vicks vaporup on your baby's feet and put socks on them. It works like a charm (on adults, too). Happy breathing!

Hi D.! I can relate! My son is trying to get over a virus as well. His started out clear, but turned green from infection later. Our pediatrician recommended a vaporizer while he sleeps. It helped keep him moist and the mucous loose. It did heat up his room a bit when we kept it on all night, so we started keeping it on for a couple of hours until we went to bed.

Did you try using a suction bulb to clear her nose out? Also, we used Infant Saline Drops in his nose. Even though his nose was runny, it often helps to keep the passageways clean and moist.

I hope this helps!

Avoid dairy and sugar. Keep the head and the feet warm. Drink hot teas made from ginger, chamomile or peppermint.

You can flush the nose with a medicated saline solution (dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt in 1 cup of lukewarm water and add one dropperful of Echinacea/Goldenseal Tincture) and follow with the ball-suction syringe.

Try a chamomile tea steam inhalation. First, feel your child's feet (they need to be warm). For cold feet, use a hot water bottle. Cover your child's hair with a hat or towel to avoid chilling afterwards. Pour boiling water over a small handful of chamomile flowers (or a chamomile tea bag) and steep in a covered pan for 1-3 minutes. Pour tea through a strainer into a glass bowl. Place the bowl on the table in a heavier bowl for safety. Sit with your warmly dresssed child on your lap, or next to you. Immediately cover up with a large towel for another 5-10 minutes. Rest after completion of application for another 20-30 minutes.

Also use oil of eucalyptus, lemon, rosemary, or lavendar in a hot steam vaporizer for room humidity at night.

Vapor bath before bed. Baby vicks on chest and back. Warm mist humidifier (Wal-Mart sells a Vicks one for $12) that has Vicks Vapor Liquid you put in it. Close doors to her room and let that run for a while before even putting her to bed. I am currently using a pillow (although not recommended) to elevate but my girl is 16 months. I just keep watching her througout the night. They recommend having them sleep in their carseats for elevation. Good Luck!

Just to be safe, I would have a doctor check your baby out. Then we always put a blanket or two so that the crib had a slight incline to help keep her head up -- it makes it easier to breath. Also, a humidifier helps keep the air moist for breathing purposes as well -- and they sell inexpensive (20 dollars) at the drugstore -- vapor something - vixx?--.
And, of course, the blue bulb up the nose, if there is anything there to get -- and also, lots & lots of liquids. (If the crib incline makes you nervous, sleeping in a carseat is safe too.) Fresh air is helpful too.

I have one of those cool humidifiers and it seems to help during the night when little colds and congestion seem the worst. Also, I grew up with Vick's Salve on my chest and I still believe in it...

The biggest help is to sleep upright. My son always slept in his car seat in his crib when he was sick, he couldn't sleep any other way. Waterless vaporizers work wonders! So does a steam room before bed in the bathroom with shower soothers. A humidifier would be good now that the air is a bit drier, during the summer there is no point. I never used anything but tylenol and motrin for fevers. Even before the recall, my doctor told me that the cold meds really don't work anyway. Baby vicks is also great, only use on the chest. Some people put that stuff around the nose and that is a big no no! I really feel for you, I remember those long nights/days! Of course there is the standard saline spray and suction, but that really never worked well on my son.

cool mist humidifier, saline drops and lift her head at night i always put my kids car seat in their crib and let them sleep in that. the elevation helps keep them clear. only 1 child didn't do well with cool mist and she did wondeful with a reg warm mist humidifier. they also have bath washes with methol in them. my last had cronic bronchitis as an infant and she would sleep in her swing. i went thru a whole lot of batteried but at least she could breath.

I swear by Baby Vicks! Rub some on her tummy, back and bottoms of feet all day long and that should help alleviate some of her congestion. Just make sure you're very careful and she can't get any of it on her hands or face! You need to wash your hands immediately after applying it. Also a humidifier should help her at night and naptime.

And as for the recalls... the recall was a proactive recall, not b/c the products didn't work. If you are careful about the dosagea and always follow your doc's instructions based on her weight (and underdose a bit if you are nervous) I would feel completely safe using them. They didn't take those products off the market b/c they were dangerous, they did it b/c SOME people can't read directions or follow a doc's orders and overdosed their own kiddos! Unbelievable, really.

Good luck, I know how hard this is!

I read a post not that long ago that many mothers rub vicks on their babies feet and put sock s on them. So many mothers mentioned it that it might be worth a try. Saline mist in the nose helps. A cool mist humidifier in the room at night and I also took my babies in to a warm shower with me before they went to bed and when they woke up in the morning. It was amazing how much stuff came out of their noses just standing in the shower. You could put some toys in the shower and sit and play with her in your lap too. Good luck!!

I second the last moms suggestions. They also make a child's version of methelatim. Either that or the baby vicks for sure will help her to breath better when sleeping. If you can keep her elevated when sleeping that will help too.
Be aware that because of this congestion she may develop and ear infection. When you are congested as a baby up to the age of two the ear ducts that are connected to the nose and throat are short and tiny in diameter, which in turn doesn't allow for easy drainage of the congestion. When that doesn't drain well it becomes (stagnant so to speak) and infection develops. So, I would couple the motrin ( to help with inflammation) with the vicks, vaporizer, sleeping up right. That should help considerably. And you should try and nap when she does, so you aren't completely exhausted yourself.
Good luck

Strip her down and sit in the bath room while the hot shower is running. This will also help with the nose and breathing. I did this with my son along with the cold humitifier and nose sucker.
It might sound like you're running to the doc a lot but better safe than sorry and they can tell you if you should be giving her cold medicine.
Good luck getting over this cold.

Hi D., I know how frustrating this can be. Try propping up the end of the crib that the baby's head is on. the elevation can help with drainage. Then you can try saline drops and a nasal asperator, that helps at least in the short term. And a cool mist humidifier. It's amazing what humidity will do for drainage. I hope your little one gets to feeling better very soon. Have a great new year!

Definitely use a humidifier at night. If you don't already have one, get the VICKs Humidifier - pretty much anywhere! Rub a little vicks vapor rub ointment on the rim of the humidifier's spout for adding help during the night.

Check with you doctor if this little cold persists and if the mucous turns green for sure. For now, you just need to use the suction bulb on her before bed and possibly when she wakes at night.

I hope she gets better soon, its rough being ill during the holidays!

Happy New Year!

I had good luck with the pacifier that you put medicine in. I always gave tylenol. I used to use vicks in a vaperizer too. I don't think I spelled that right but oh well. You get the drift. Now, my boys get a flu shot. What a god send that is. Good luck.
