Infant Eye Contact - Albuquerque,NM

I may just be a paranoid mother, but I'm a bit concerned as my 9 week old seems to avoid eye contact. He will look at us briefly and he does smile sometimes - once in awhile at us and then at other objects. His other development milestones seem to be on target. Perhaps I'm just comparing him too much to his older sister, which I don't mean to, who if I remember right made much better eye contact and smiled a lot more at this age. I'm just wondering about other mother's experiences with eye contact and smiling at this age. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Oh, I remember that too! And I was just as paranoid! She didn't really smile either, just in her sleep.
If I remember it correctly, my daughter didn't really make eye contact and holding it until she was about three months old... she is a perfectly happy and healthy 2.5 year old now, a social butterfly and hit all her other milestones right on target.
I think at 9 weeks, there really isn't much to worry about. If it hasn't changed by your next well baby appointment, I would bring it up.
Good luck and congrats on the new baby.

Babies eyes are not well developed until 3-4 months. He will develop this skill shortly. In the mean time, ask your pediatrician next time you're there just to put your mind at ease.

I always seemed to remember this too, and if I remember right, the baby's peripheral vision is better and so he could be looking at you, just through his peripheral vision?

No need to worry, this is a normal pattern for babies that are that young, they only look at other things for just a little while then its eat and back to sleep for a little while, when they get older they will look at you a little bit more. :)

Babies don't make eye contact at this age because they cannot focus. Give it another month or so and I bet it will change. Just don't expect him to stare at you for a long period of time just yet and the smiling also doesn't start until 3-4months.

Take a deep breath and don't worry! :-) If your child was 9 months old, it might be something to be a little concerned about, but it's totally normal for a 9 week old. Lights, ceiling fans, shadows even are more interesting to a 9 week old than a human face. Good luck!
