Impulsivity in a 10-Yr-old

Hi...I need help with my 10-yr-old son who is ADD...he's on medication which helps him when he's at school. The problem is he can't seem to control his impulses...he'll reach out and grab someone, or ask two or three times for someone to move out of his way or stop doing something to him, and when they don't, he'll give them a little shove or a push...and then is in trouble at school. This seems to be getting worse. We don't really have many these issues at home, he is over-stimulated in the classroom. He was playing too rough at school today and kicked a girl and is now suspended for one day. Help!

And please...if you don't know anything about ADD or ADHD...please don't tell me about disciplining my child more...that's not the problem...he's not an ill-mannered or ill-tempered child...he's overstimulated in the classroom.

What can I do next?

I know I may be blunt, and you may not want to hear this, so if sensitive, STOP READING NOW.

When we were growing up we didn't need perscrip drugs and neither does your child. Those perscript always have side affects and that is what you're experiencing.

Use discipline. The school used it. He is suspended.
Try grounding or removing privileges. If all else fails, get out the belt. That's what the parents did back int he day, and the kids shaped up P-R-E-T-T-Y QUICK!

Spare the rod, SPOIL the child.

Get him off the drugs. It's affecting him.

Know one understands unless they have been there...for years I was in deniel that my son might have ADHD...I thought he just needs to be disciplined. My mother didn;t hesitate to pull out the belt when my brother and I got out of line, but my son not only had impulses, he also had low grades and his behavior was very distracting to the other kids. He wasn't bad he just couldn't focus or concentrate and couldn't learn like other children. My husbadn had ADHD as a child and so did his father. Anyway the school said if I didn't do soemthing he was gonna be kicked out and sent to a alternative school, and of course it broke my heart. Twodifferent schools had the smae problems and evaluted him. I took him to the docter because I had no other choice. He is nine years old and he takes concerta...his grades went form c's and d's to A'B homor roll and NO behavior marks on his report card. He has been doing great for half of last school year and this school year, but now he seems to be getting out of control; again. His impulses are getting bad, being mean to his 2 year old sister, getting in some trouble in class fro not listening,a nd this hasn ;t been ahppening. I don't want him to move up again on his meds because although he hasn't lost any weight since taking the meds he still looks boney and frail. It does worry me and he has been having different things happening where he wasnt feeling well. I am like you I don't know wheat to do either...I dont want him on more meds or two different ones either. I think maybe we should both get a second opinion form another doctor!!

I have a nine year old little girl that has ADHD. I do not know what kind of medicine that your son is taking, but one of my biggest concerns as a mother with a child with this kind of problem was that I did not want something that was going to make her act weird. My docotr prescribed her Strattera, which is a non-stimulant drug. Maybe switching his medicine would be good.

People that have no personal knowledge of dealing with children like ours, shouldn't comment!!!!Remember to take it all with a grain of salt on this sight.
My son with ADHD is also 10 and we're having much of the same problems. I have fought hard to have intervention at the school or at least some understanding. Because of the diagnosis, you can demand an ARD meeting with the school and have the diagnostician present. They can offer the teacher advice on handling these situations and it helps the school to see that it's not these kids just 'being bad'. They have a handicap that needs to be addressed, just like the special ed kids. That's the way I look at it anyway. Good luck and keep talking to your dr.

Change his sensory diet. Give him more stimulus at home...more of a chance to get that physical impact that he needs. It sounds like he needs more compression and deep impact...for instance, I know this sounds crazy, but wrestle, or get couch cusions and sit on top of him. Get a therapy peanut ball and have him lay down on the ground and somebody lays on top of it and rolls on top of him. Occupational therapy might also help.

I know that you can't control the over-stimulation at school, but maybe more impactful actvities at home can give him the input that he needs to make it through the hours at school.

I just addressed this issue with my son's doc. He was on concerta & strattera and still having impulse control issues (lashing out, dangerous stunts on his bike that ended up with 7 stitches, and picking holes in his bedroom carpet). We ended up switching to a new drug called Vyvanse which hopefully will help him with impulse control. Good luck -- I feel your pain -- I'm there myself most of the time. :)

the medication he is taking may not be the right kind
i have a daughter who is 9 almost 10 and she is adhd
she was taking concerta and we have changed her to vyvanse and we have noticed many positive changes
one being her appetite is better
which is a big concern because she is so small
but we have also notice more control of her impulses
talk to your doctor because the dosage may need to be changed or the med changed to another kind
hope i have been some help
