A friend of mine said that his iPhone isn't get iMessages, but just text messages. What is the difference? He's got an iPhone as well as I've got one too, but said he can't get iMessages, just texts. I was just curious to know what the difference is.

TIA

He probably has it but doesn't use it. It is completely useless unless everyone you know has an iProduct. You can only iMessage with iProducts.

iMessage is free from iPhone to iPhone whereas texts count toward whatever text plan you have. In and out text both count.
iMessage needs to be turned on in order to work.
There are some issues where it will turn itself off. I would suggest going to the Apple support page and follow the directions.
It is worth it if you are sending messages iPhone to iPhone or any other i-device.

Also it depends on how old his phone is. The 3G doesn't have iMessage.

And, not only does HE have to turn it on (in the 4S it's settings/messages/ and then turn iMessage to "on") but the RECIPIENT has to have theirs on as well.
So, for a while I could iMessage my daughter but not my mom, until I went in and turned hers on.

iMessage pulls from your data plan. So, if he's not grandfathered in to the dataplan and he iMessages when he's not on wireless it counts against his data allowance.
Also - since it works on the network - if you are somewhere with not great access, your messages won't go through on iMessage (like when I'm at work and the signal is low - thanks AT&T).

Hope that helps.

imessage works on 3g my hubby has 3g iphone4 and it works it will only work as an imessage from iphone or ipad users. If not its a text to a non iphone user and both have to have the imessage enabled. when using the ipad it goes through as a email address from the ipad to ipad and a phone # from phone to ipad. so if you have an ipad with wifi you can also imessage.

You also have to have the lastest operating system to use imessage. I have a 3g iphone and since I installed iOS5, I now have imessage when texting others with iphones, ipods, etc.
