You might want to try calling a local grade school or district office. Ask if they know the names of any in-home childcare providers. Most schools will have a list of providers who watch children after school and in the summers. Those same people may also watch infants.
You could also call some churches in your area and ask them if they keep a list. Very often churches will keep lists of high school students who baby sit, but they often have lists of childcare providers of all kinds.
Have you talked to any of your neighbors or coworkers? When I went back to work we started talking to neighbors, coworkers and other members of our church. We were thrilled to find so many people we knew recommending the same daycare center. That daycare didn't have any openings right away, so we followed the advice of a few of my husband's coworkers and used another center while we waited for an opening. I did visit the center and was very pleased, but just knowing that people we knew recommended it made the transition so much easier.
