So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your advice. I must say, My twins are adapting slowly to the sippy cup. My daughter gets the straw cup really good and my son gets the silicone sippy cup. I haven't dropped the bottle all together, we will do this gradually b/c they are still on formula and I dont want to take away from any of their nutrients and weight gain. The straw sippy cups are really neat!!

Hi. My first questions is "why does he have a choice?" I have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old. Whenever I wanted them to start something new, I'd make it exciting. If that didn't work, I'd use a reward system. And sometimes, I had to get serious. In looking back over my parenting, I can see where I was trying to make everything easy for my little ones. The problems with that are many but mainly I see how I was running myself ragged and they were like little princesses on a throne! So, sometimes I just go back to the "because I said so." adage and walk away.

So, about the sippy cup...he or she will get thirsty enough to drink from it eventually (IF that's the only choice). If bottles are still in use, forget it. Who wouldn't rather drink from a bottle? One more way; if you want to ease into it, give water only in the bottle but yummy juice or milk from the sippy.

Good luck!

Can you give him a bottle instead?
How 'bout drinking from the sippy cup all the time yourself, so he will try and emulate you?

My advise I know it sounds mean, being his mother is hard but getrid of the bottles and only have sippycups. If he cries let him cry he will eventually get thirsty and drink out of it.It really worked for me.I learned to getrid of what needs to be gone,I did the same thing with his pacifier.

My son is 3 1/2 now and he had trouble with those sippy cups with the hard tops on them. I finally found some called "NUBY" and the nipples are silicone and are more like a bottle nipple so the transition seemed easier. You can get these sippy ____@____.com't give up - he will start eventually!

I took all bottles away so my daughter didn't have an option. She soon realized if she wanted something she would have to drink from the cup. If you give in to him he will continue to refuse the sippy. Try a few different ones, I know my daughter has her favorites. GOOD LUCK!! and don't give up..

Try a cup with a straw. my son preferred that over a cup. he did eventually start the cup but started with a straw.

K.,

My son used to do the same thing. Sippy cups are like pacifiers, you have to find the right one. That is what I had to do.

If you go to Wal-Mart, they have some special sippy cups that have rubber tops on them that are similar to the texture of a nipple on a bottle. This is the type of sippy cup my 14 month old uses. I found that it was a much easier transition for him than going straight to the regular plastic-top sippy cups.

Why not try taking to valve out of it to make it easier. I know it won't be spill proof then, but you can do this at mealtime with supervision so there is not a big mess. Seems like he is getting frustrated by not getting anything out of the cup. Once he gets the hang of it with no valve then put it back in so he can carry the cup around where ever he wants.

My 11 month old is having the same problem, but I found a sports bottle by Nube at Wal-Mart that is leak proof, its shaped like a bottle with a nipple and my son loves it, he would rather have the sports bottle than his own bottle.

Hi K.,

My two boys had the same problem and we went to straw cups immediately. They loved them and it seems to be easier to drink from the straw cups. So try the straw cups and hope it helps you too.

Try different kinds of sippy cups. Some kinds are easier to drink from than others. My kids did well with the Avent cups. They have different kinds of "nipples" that you can change out as the child grows. The early ones are soft like a bottle nipple. Later, they go to a hard spout kind of nipple. Hope this helps.

Hi K.,

I had the same problem with my twin girls. They didn't want anything to do with sippycups so i gave them plastic cups with a straw in it and they had to sit in their chairs or on the floor to drink from them. It wasn't as practical as a sippy cup but in the end they never walk around with a drink in their hands.
I hope this helps.
Good luck

K. I agree with the pp's about trying the straw kind or taking the bottle away. It will be hard to take the bottle away, but you have to do it eventually! At 12mo my oldest took about a week to stop crying for the bottle. My youngest was a pro with the sippy at 10mo so I took the bottles then. She didn't cry once. Good Luck!

The dispossible sippy cups from walmart with the soft nipple, shaped like a dumbell are the best for training. They still have the long nipple like a bottle, they do not have a spill proof plug, but they make very little to no mess and they are reasonably priced. I kept mine for several years, so you don't actually have to throw them away. I think that they are 96 cents each. I have used them on 2 of my own, and 5 of my sisters kids. They are great!!
