Ideas on Starting Neighborhood Fit plus Club

Hello all who's reading this. Open for ideas and advise. I was talking to my business partner about getting people from the neighborhood and coming together at a good location to meet up before doing something positive like walking, running, or even jogging together as a group maybe twice a week. Also sharing ideas with one another. We would also have t-shirts made up to wear on these days. We could aslo plan days to go out bowling, eating, or even to a show and just have fun together. I just want people in the neighborhood to do something positive and get up off the couch and have fun! There would be no cost to get in the club, just to come together as one. Any Suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello Mamasource Family! I just want to thank you all for your responses. My business partner in 5LINX Karen S. and I are very excited about this! She is a Mamasource member as well. We are putting together a plan on getting this Neighborhood Fit Club Started. One of the things we know we're going to have to face is changing weather. We chose the color grass green, bright in color for our button ribbons,hats/caps. We're currently in the Florrisant area. We welcome not only our neighborhood, but neighboring neighborhoods to join in as well. We will start off as a small group, then eventually grow as we pass out flyers and emails and alot of word of mouth. My sister in Atlanta said she my start one up too! Our goal in the future is to partner up with other teams and do a massive run/walk. We will keep you posted! Thanks for all your support Mamasource Family! J.. Feel free to email me anytime:-)

That sounds fun. I wish there were something like that in my neighborhood. I have no idea how you would put it together though. Let us know if you come up with something. Maybe flyers in their doors?

What a great idea!! The weather is so nice now that you can start by doing things outside! The only suggestion I have is that you have some sort of organized babysitting. Maybe there is a teenager or dad around that could watch the kids while you go walk for an hour or whatever. If it's a teen, maybe each mom who brings a kid could chip in a dollar or two to pay the babysitter. I hope this works out for you!!

That is a wonderful idea! I have no idea where you live or what is around there, but I'm sure you can find a place to meet up. Maybe a local gym (since they tend to be open many hours) will allow you to "congregate" there (you can "sell" it to them by telling them it gives them exposure to "fitness" savvy moms who might be interested in joining the gym as well?) or how about a community center? They may let you use that as a meeting place (heck, they might even pick up the idea if it takes off and offer the group through them!) Another option would be a local mall (coming from NJ, we had malls out the wazoo...and tons of moms would meet there to walk, even before the shops opened), but I did notice that out here, more of the "malls" are outdoors.
To get people started, you might look into posting a flyer at local churches, gyms, supermarkets (I know I spend WAY too much time there! LOL), as well as putting a free ad in a local paper.
It sounds like a great idea and I wish you the best!
Thank you for looking to enrich the lives of others!

This sounds like a WONDERFUL idea. My only input would be to get the kids involved too? I have lots of trouble trying to work out at home without them crawling all over me or getting in the way etc. Also, the gyms here in Gardner don't have a play area/anyone to watch the kids. My husband often works long hours so I don't have a lot of time away from the kids!! Sounds great though! Keep us posted!

Love that you posted here since I was having the same idea for quite some time but have no clue what or where to start either!:)
We go for coffee with some other moms every Thursday and spend the whole morning there, I love it but I always thought that it would be great if my coffee peers or some other moms that are more excersice oriented would love to meet for excersice too! I do workout every day and know my routines by heart so I could be helping other moms getting into good shape too rather that doing it myself like I do now. Or rather than getting into pastries with the coffe:)
Many complain about how hard is to keep fit or diet but it is not really hard if you know how and better yet if you have someone that helps you and that is your friend!
Great idea!!!! Go for it! Where are you located? Do you already know a group of moms like my coffee peers that you can start with? Inviting your first friend over and share some good habits will get you starting....I think.
Let us know a little bit more about it, may be we can all pitch in and help!!!

I don't know if you've heard of the website meetup.com, but they have several groups that already exist if you don't want to start something new. Some that I know about are Strollerfit, The Mommy Movement, Fit Mommas, and others. Strollerfit has several locations around St. Louis. You might want to check out the site and see what already exists to get an idea. Good Luck!

don't you think t-shirts have been done to death. Besides depending on your climate there would be days that the t-shirts wouldn't show. Maybe someone could make small ribbon pins. They could wear them on the outside of their sweaters, jackets, or coats. Maybe flyers would be a way to contact the neighborhood. Also don't forget that some people have children, will you include them or not? I know it is getting complicated. But it does sound like a good idea. Good Luck.

Do you have a neighborhood association or list serv? That would be an excelent place to start! If not I would find a centralized park or green space, get the first few neighbors together and start from there. Your group will grow. Lots of people out there would love to be connected to their neighbors, they just don't know how to start.

GOod Morning J., What a Wonderful idea. Hand out flyers or post ads around your area. Local store, flower shops maybe a beauty shop. Maybe look for a few responsible teenagers to help with children at a park close by. You could all chip in to pay the teens for child care if they didn't volunteer. What teen doesn't need a few bucks in their pockets.

In your flyer make sure you list what your committment is all about. One other idea to get the word out is you and your partner just start walking and placing your flyers on doors, then keep on walking. People will see you every day or every few days and perhaps join in.

If you do get T-Shirts I found really nice ones at Micheal's for $3.49 I had some printed with a Pic of my mother for our Alzhiemer's Memory walk team. They have a wide varity of colors. Not sure where a Micheals in your area of Mo.

Like one Momma said Can we come play too.. :)) I think I am a little far away though living in Benton, ks.

It's a Awesome Idea J., GO for it Woman Times a wasting!!!

You can make it work
Good Luck to you always
