Ideas on How to Keep a Diaper on My 2 1/2 Year Old

I don't know if anyone else has gone though this or not, but during nap time and sometimes in the middle of the night my son takes off his diaper. The worst is during nap because he usually has a BM. He then tries to clean it up himself or just spreads it around the room. Luckily I usually find it pretty quickly because I check up on him every 10 - 15 min.but it still takes me about half an hour to an hour to clean up his room, which sometimes makes him miss his nap. I have told him that this is very icky and that he could get very sick doing this. His response is "O.K. mommy" but I don't think he really gets it. He started to do this once I began potty training him, and he does try and go before his nap but it does not help. I have tried a couple of things but nothing has helped and this week it has gotten worse so any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. : )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This weekend I tried a couple of different suggestions. The pull-ups and overalls he took off. The onesies he took the diaper off squeezing it out a leg hole. (don't know how he managed that one! LOL) What seemed to work is duct tape during his naps and backwards full body PJ's during the night. Thanks to everyone who helped me out on this problem. I'm very grateful !!!

Ok here are my suggestions that have worked for me.

first you could try letting him wear the ONEssies that they sell at gymboree and childrens place for bigger toddlers. they have them all the way up to size 4 I think. That worked with my son for a while because he could not get them off. put some sleep pants on over them.

Second you could try having him wear the full body pajamas and to keem him from un zipping them you could try one of those diaper pins that they are not supposed to be able to undo and stick them selves with.

3rd is have him wear the onesie but have him wear jeans over them and put the jeans on backwards with the button and zipper in the back. (he wont be able to get the jeans off)
I know that one sounds crazy and uncomfortable but that is the one that is for the die hard poop spreaders and it really works if the other suggestions fail.

Good luck with all that...

I have never had this type of problem, but if it were me, I would put my child in a sleeper (one piece) that is difficult to get out of and difficult to get to his diaper. I would even do it at naptime for awhile until he got out of the habit of taking off the diaper. He may just feel like he shouldn't be wearing a diaper since he is potty training and feeling more like a big boy...Does he do the same with training pants? He might refrain from it if he knows the trainers are for big boys, but made just in case "big boys" have accidents, which he needs to understand is normal when learning to potty train...Good Luck, wish I could offer more.

My advice is to keep him up until after his BM, then put him in underwear (you're potty training anyway right?)

What a busy little boy. I have a friend that had the same problem and she used duct tape - by the other responses this is common. Another thing she did when potty training and using pull-ups, was stress to her child that they come off in the bathroom only. You may have to camp outside his door and catch him in the act so you can get him to the potty immediately.

Good luck

When my 2 1/2 year old starting doing this at about 28 months old I taught him to sit on the "poddy chair" whenever his diaper was off.

He's not poddy trained by any means - but now if I put his poddy chair in the bedroom with him during nap times he will make his deposits THERE instead of on the floor, to his hands, to the walls, etc.

We've also taught him that poop is "yucky" and encouraged him to not play with his hands in it. :-D

My son does the same thing. My twins are the same age as your boy which makes me think this behavior is somewhat age appropriate.

I've found that putting his diaper on backward helps a lot. It definitely slows him down. If we duct tape the diaper on top of putting it on backwards, we're certain to make it through the night without incident. Good luck!

Does he know how to undo onesies? Like if you put him in a sleeper all the time, would he still get his diaper off?? My daughter was a stripper and took off her diaper, too. I started wrapping masking tape around the top (advice from a friend who had to do the same!)!! It's not too difficult for an adult to undo, but kids have a little more trouble. Good luck!!!

I have twin 3yr old boys who did the same thing...The only thing I found that worked was putting pants or shorts on them b4 they went down for a nap or to bed this restricting the easy access to the diaper....It's perfectly normal and he'll grow out of it...Also if your still using diapers you may want to try the pullups that helped alot with my boys also, for some reason their not as confining on them as the diaper...

Put his diaper on backwards- they do not have the manual dexterity to pull the tabs open on the back. I suppose he could still possibly just pull it down- but this worked very well for a friend of mine whose child did the same thing.

You are not alone! I have gone through this as well as my friend w/triplets. (Imagine 3 BM diapers smeared around the room!)

After putting your son's diaper on wrap the top of it in duct tape all the way around. You could go several times around if you think once won't hold him.

Good Luck!

I had the same problem with my daughter. I finally tried putting her down with overalls on and that did the trick. After about a week of that the problem was fixed...now, she wasn't very happy and would fuss when she couldn't get her diaper off, but she got over it.

Hi P.,

I had this same problem with my son. I made sure that when I put him down for his nap, that he only wore things he could not get out of like overhauls. They worked great! Or anything else that makes it hard form them to get out of like(zip up pjs) This is so much better then cleaning up that mess! I went through that and had to call the carpet cleaners and was charged $200 to get the stains out! This way you won't have to worry and check on him every 15 min. Hopes this helps let me know if you have any questions.

Have you tried the pull on diapers ( I think Pampers makes them) then he wouldn't be able to pull the tabs on the regular diapers. Another thing you could try is to leave him dressed in at least a onesie or sleeper pajamas. My nephew was the same way except he thought it was hilarious when he painted the walls.

Have you tried rubber pants? Or one piece pajamas that he can't take off at night? I saw an earlier post that mentioned diaper doublers, but I couldn't find them when I ran a Google search.

It might be time to start potty training. He may have a BM during his nap time because he is able to relax. Then he doesnt want to be dirty so he takes off his pamper. But he doesnt know what to do with it.
Take the BM to the toilet, dump it and make sure your son starts to get that BM and toilet do together. He may even enjoy to flush.
Try not to pressure him, but at the same time, if he is ready, it might not take too long.
I has a similar problem with my two year old. He would either put his dirty diaper where ever he had his BM or he would take it off and do his business in a private corner of the house where it would later be a smelly surprise.
Hope it helps,
M.

I have a 19 month old daughter that takes her diaper off and pees in her bed. She has also taken a "dirty" diaper off and made a mess several times.

We have to make sure that she has shorts or jammie bottoms on at all times, or she will take off her diaper and go on the floor but she usually does this in her bed. Keeping some type of clothing on over her diaper works for now.

This is a perfect time to start introducing "the potty", which we are working on routinely.

Use duct tape, you can also give him a doll or teddy with a diaper so he can put it on and off, I read that somewhere.

We were having the same problem with our little boy, who is also 2 1/2. That's when we decided to go ahead and put him in "pull-ups" instead of his diapers. For the most part, the "ripping them off" has stopped, but he is in the process of potty training (on his terms, not mine), so occasionally, he will still "strip". He also is delayed in his expressive speech, so we are having to make allowances for that. I am not going to get "serious" about his potty training until this spring, just before he turns 3. Right now, when he tells us he needs to go, we go in with him, and if he doesn't tell us, we just have him change his pants and sit on the potty (in case there's more), and don't make a hugely big deal about him "not telling".

And you're right....2 1/2 year-olds just don't "get" that spreading their poop all over their room or putting it in their mouths can make them VERY SICK, so you will still have to be diligent about watching him on this issue. For the days he has to miss his nap because you're cleaning his room, make sure he goes to bed for the night that much earlier.

Your son is probably also having his BM's at nap time, because that is when he is being "forced" to relax, so try to have him go in the potty as part of his afternoon nap routine. That might help, too.

Hope this helps!
