Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any great ideas for my 5 yr old daughter's b-day party? I'm looking for any fun activities, crafts, goody bags ideas or small gifts to give out. I'm not really the creative type so any suggestions you have would be helpful! We're kind of on a budget (who isn't these days!) so we can't afford anything too over the top. Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

My sister had a party for her 7yr old son and I no it was a huge hit. depending on the amount of kids, you wet some t-shirts child size, wring them out, put them in the freezer the night before and when it is time pull them out, they will be all wrinkled, the kids then have a race to see who can put there's on the fastest! sounded silly to me but, I was there and it was riot! have fun..

Oriental Trading Compnay has craft ideas that are cheap and they usually have anywhere from 6 to 12 in one pack. You also can go to a dollar store and get stuff to put in the goodie bags and sometimes they have crafts as well.

Target has a great selection of $1 items (usually in the front when you walk in the door) good for party favors. Also, Dollar General is a good place to look.
Depending on what kind of party you're throwing, girls & boys that age like "dress-up"-when one of my daughters turned 5, I gathered all the dress-up clothes & accessories we had(and some of the mothers who are friends of mine brought some of theirs as well)for a "Tea Party/Fashion Show". We used our church parlor which was just the right size for all the fun.
Hope this helps!
Oh-I also went to garage sales & Goodwill and purchased old teacups for party favors. I filled them with candy and play jewelry-tied them up in pink tulle with satin ribbon. I put old decorative teapots on the tables for decoration.

A great little girl's theme is a princess party. Yor purchase all decorations and supplies for about 25 dollars at the dollar store at chapel hill mall or check out RSVP, near Acme at the Wooster-Hawkins Plaza. Tell each girl on the invitation to all dress in their princess best. Don't forget get a crown and septer for the lady in honor and if she has one best friend she can appoint her as a matron in waiting and she could were a lesser crown. Fairy tale stories could be told by a member of your family dressed as a fairy or princess also, after the story can lead the fair ladies to the table for tea-punch, grilled cheese wedges, chicken nugget kabos or mini pizza snacks and of course cake etc.. you could elect a video, like beauty and the beast to watch half before eating and half after with games in between. you can also take a trip to the libary if you don't like my ideas. The children. section will enchante you even further. Have fun with it! Don't let these parties stress you, save it up for sweet sixteen in ten years or so !Smile!

When my, now 14yr old, daughter was 5 we had a party theme of "Bring your favorite doll and come dressed as your mom. It was so cute. Some of of the girls wore semi high heels and lots of pearls and beads. We played games that all involved the dolls. Even simple games you can use a doll as the "ball" or use the dolls hands to pick up cotton balls to put them in a bowl.
You have to think about what your daughter likes right now, because next year it will most likely not be the same thing. So parties like spa works at older ages, we did one about age 8. But baby dolls only work for most girls for a few years.

The old-fashioned donkey pinata that you try to break open with a stick while blind-folded! I hosted a big family Christmas at my house this year. My 4-year-old daughter, the other kids, and the adults who watched all thought it was a blast! We will be doing it again in May when my daughter turns 5. There are "safe" pinatas now also available with ribbons to pull instead of hitting it with a stick, but this seemed so boring!!

Hi G.,

A very nice birthday party is the stuff n fluff workshop from Noah's Ark. I am a bit biaz since I liked them so much that I became a Noah's Ark Crew member, but these are really fun parties! It is kinda like build-a-bear but instead of going to the mall we come to you.
You can find more info at http://www.noahsarkworkshop.com/ (not my personal site) and if you are interested depending on where you are located I can hook you up with a crew member.

My standby (and I admit I need some new ideas!) is Pin the blank on the blank, depending on what the theme of the party is. One year I made a poster of a dragon minus his wing and cut out wings for the kids to decorate and then we played pin the wing on the dragon. This year my daughter had a princess party so we did pin the crown on the princess. The kids can take their craft home with them too.

You can buy craft kits relatively cheaply pretty much anywhere. They usually come with more than enough supplies for 5-6 kids to do 2-3 crafts.

Or you can make your own games, last year my son had a circus party, and we made a tight rope (tape on the floor), pin the nose on the clown (homemade), a lion jumping thru the hoop (hula hoop and a stuffed lion we already had) I don't remember what other things we did at the moment, but if you google themed bday party ideas for kids, you will get all sorts of ideas, in all sorts of price ranges, that is what we did for my sons party.

good luck

A great website for kid's crafts is: FreeKidsCrafts.com. They even have a section that is specifically for girls. Another fun and inexpensive activity is making "hobo bags" from old t-shirts. It's easy. You could use old t-shirts you have or have each child bring their own. Check out www.diynetwork.com for instructions. Good luck.

Hi G.-

I just had my son's 5th birthday party. It was a Spiderman theme so we found a pinata at Party City for around $20. It is the pull string type and my husband and I each held the end of the broom stick we tied it to. It was a BIG hit. Prior to the pinata, I gave each child a brown paper bag and had them decorate it with Spiderman stickers and crayons, as well as put their name on it. They used the bags to put their candy in to take home. I kept extra candy on hand to gice to those who didn't get as much so it was even. You can save $ by buying solid colored plates at the Dollar Tree and even the candy-the kids won't care their plates aren't Princess or whatever the theme is. Costo has HUGE awesome cakes for aroun d $16. We also played pin the sticker in SpiderMan and had relays with a marshmallow on a spoon. I would stick to very few structured activities too....they loved the free play the last half-hour. Keep it simple and enjoy yourself!

My daughter just turned 5 and we did a cooking party - made chef hats and aprons from dish towels in advance. The kids made their own mini pizzas and decorated their own 9" cake. Check familyfun.com as that's where I got most my ideas.

My daughter just went to a friends 5 yr old party that was a lot of fun. She had a beach theme at her house. They did a few crafts to keep them busy. She had the table decorated with a blue table cloth with a fishing net over it. Each child got a glass jar with sand on it. Then then put different items into the jars. Things they would find on a beach. She had little cups filled with sea shells, mimi balls, flowers etc... Then they shook up the jars & they would try to find different items hidden in the sand. The next craft was to bead a necklas with beads & one charm with a beach theme(star fish, shell). They also played a bean bag toss game she made. The bean bags were shaped like fish & they threw them at the fish cut out board. For every fish they got in they won a piece of candy. As a take home gift they all got a sand bucket with a shovel. Was a lot of fun, but didn't cost a lot of money.

At 5, my oldest daughter was still very into dressing up, princesses, tea parties.... So we tried to combine all that into her party. We invited 8 of her preschool girl friends to our house for a "Dress Up Tea Party". I asked everyone to bring their favorite dress-up outfit if they wanted, plus I had all of ours hanging out for the girls to play with. I also had her little vanity set up with lip gloss and brushes so they could have fun primping themselves. For a craft, I bought some foam princess crowns (about $1 a piece at Michaels) and had foam and rhinestone stickers to decorate them with. Then for a game we played "Pass the Purse". It's basically like Hot Potato. Everyone sits in a circle and passes a purse along to music. But when the music stops, whoever is holding the purse gets to open the purse and pick out a treat. I used fun necklaces and made sure everyone got one by the time the game was over. After all the playtime, I served the girls lunch (simple chicken nuggets, pretzels, fruit, etc.) I decorated my dining room table with a pink table cloth, pink plates.... very girly... and found some cute plastic pink tea cups at the party store for them to drink out of and take home with them. I did give an additional favor of a Barbie Fun Pad, but I think just the crowns, necklaces and cups would be plenty if you're watching your budget. Overall, it went really well, the girls all had fun and my daughter felt like a true princess! Hope that gives you some help.

How about a Spa party, beauty day.... set up little centers and get your friends to help.. You can do nail stickers at one table, makeup at another, hair braiding, tattoos.

We had a Pretty Princess Party for my daughter who turned 4 and we did this. Each child got a little goody bag with cheap treats and fun stuff from the dollar store

Or you can buy plain white bags and have the kids decorate their own treat bags with foamie stickers, crayons and stickers and then have a pull string pinata and then the kids can fillup their bags... fun game and treat bags all in one

My sons' sixth was a Bee-day party. I had 50 people and only spent about $50, but you could go cheaper if you wanted.

We had Bee Movie party wear, but that was not the focus. We had a quilting bee where the kids drew on quilt squares and I am putting them into a quilt for the boys. we had a singing bee game for the adults. We had a bee pinata, a spelling bee, the angry bee- like hot potato, and bee prizes, honey comb cereal, bee movie honey jars, and other bee things. The colors were black and yellow and we all wore those colors (yellow shirts and electrical tape!) I pinned netting on my yellow hat and I was a bee keeper! Everyone had a great time, we even had gifts that started wih B!

I am the dollar store Queen, I guess. Dollar Tree and Deals are great places!!!
We always did a spider web to start off the parties. We would tie something small to the end of a string, hide it under the couch, behind the TV stand then start weaving the web around furniture legs, etc all the way to the door of the room then tie the string to a clothes pin (or a pencil) and keep them by the door. The first game was to give all the girls a clothes pin and then have them all start unwinding the web to get to their prize together. We used sandwich bags with the girl's names on it to start storing their prizes from the games. Tie something like a plastic bracelet, flavored lip balm, et., to the end as the prize. I know you can get packs of these with several in them for a dollar.
I would pick up some of the kits they have at the Dollar store for making bracelets (all these girls can string beads) and have them each make a piece of jewelery they can add to the bag if you want a craft project. This is less messy than having them decorate head bands or barrettes and cheaper in the long run.
You can copy a blank face onto a piece of paper and set up a table where they are to dress up the face. Have them draw on the hair, hats, etc. and see who does the best one in 5 minutes. Make sure you have plenty of crayons to use for this project so they don't fight over a color!
We used the pass a life saver on a staw game, the winner got a full roll of life savers. Blind folded the girls were set down in front of a bowl of cotton balls and given a wooden spoon. The girl who got the most cotton balls out of the bowl and onto the table won but they couldn't just scoop them out they had to pick them up to move them.
Balloons, and musical chairs, pin the nose on the clown or tail on the donkey.
Hope that helps.

I have been to quite a few birthday parties for kids 4 and 5 years old at those bounce places such as Run, Jump & Play. The kids can jump and play for an hour or so and then they go into a room for lunch, cake & ice cream and presents. The places are really nice and they manage the whole party. My daughter loves going to these parties and gets a ton of exercise at them.

I went to a 3 yr old b-day party yesterday and they had a ton of fun games. The mom had a scavenger hunt where the kids had to find items of a certain color or an animal and when they brought the item back, they got a prize for their goody bag. They also had an obstacle course type game that the kids really enjoyed also. She had about 5 different games and all the kids ended up with 5 prizes in their goody bag such as crayons, snacks, stickers, a ball, etc...

At that age they should be getting their own library cards and a good project would be to make book marks. I use to do this with the kindergaten kids on the last libray day for them in school. While many oif them were already 6 I think 5 year olds could do this. You could do stamps. stickers, or crayons. II would not use markers. Also you could do heavy card stock paper (which I had access to through school) or the foamy sheets at Joann's or hobby lobby. Or maybeyou could get charms and have each chiold pick on out and braid yarn or floss in the colors they choose to make a bookmark. We always had a party and books were purchased cheaply and given out to 2 boys and 2 girls in each class. They really like this. We also diod heaolthy snacks. Pretzels rolled in peanut butter with raisins. ants on a log. The kids always had such a good time the teachers asked for me to do the classes and not the librian.
