Ideas for Wedding Anniversary Trip This Weekend

I know that this is short notice as well as a tall order, but here we go...My 11th wedding anniversary is on Monday. I have nothing booked and don't know where to go.

I live right near the beach, so a beach vacation seems like a waste of money. I was thinking of going up to Big Bear, but I'm worried about the air quality because of the fires. It's seems that the smoke is being blown toward the mountains.

My little person can only handle 2 hours in the car before having a complete meltdown, so I need to be mindful of distance. I can leave today and come back on Tuesday.

I'd love some advice. It seems that every year my husband and I don't do much to celebrate our anniversary. Last year (Our 10 year) was the saddest anniversary yet. We went to visit my dying aunt in New York. I got to say goodbye to her and she died shortly thereafter. I want to make this year special somehow.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful responses. I now have many ideas for many anniversaries to come! I think we'll try Ojai next year.

Just got back from Big Bear. The air quality was just fine just like the personal message that someone sent said it would be. We stayed in a 3 bedroom condo right at the base of Snow Summit for $135 a night. My friend came with her daughter as well as my mom and her friend. We had two separate "cabins." Had a ball. Took the chair lift up to the top of the mountain. What a view! Had sourdough pancakes for breakfast...yum!

You could try Ojai. There is a really cute hotel there called The Capri. Just Google "the capri ojai" for the website. It's kind of last minute to get a hotel room on a holiday weekend but you could try - it has a pool and a little kid's splash pool and is dog friendly too. There are nearby hikes/restaurants and spas. Also good mtn biking if he's into that.

Or you could go to Catalina for the day! You could take him wine tasting in Temecula (day trip). (My husband wouldn't want to go wine tasting but...)

Ojai is a nice quick get away from LA. It is inland from Ventura and is a beautiful town. The Blue Iguana is a great B&B or its sister property, The Emerald Iguana. You can arrange for in room massage. Great restaurants. In the foothills. Very relaxing.

First of all, congrats on your anniversary! This past year my husband and I celebrated our 5th anniversary and went to Avalon on Catalina Island. It is a beach vacation of sorts, but you really have the sense of being away from it all. It is manageable and close. Our son did great with the vacation. We did have my parents with us so they watched him so we could have our anniversary dinner and go kayaking. So, without that it may have been different. It would still have been nice, though.
I just read the other suggestions and Ojai and Monterey Bay are great possibilities also. You know, North County San Diego is also great. I used to live in Carlsbad and it is a great place. Encinitas, etc are fun, low-key places. Legoland is right in Carlsbad. So, there is little one fun to be had. Let us know what you decide to do. Once you decide, let me know if it is any of my suggestions. I might be able to steer you in some directions. Esp with Catalina, Monterey and Carlsbad. Good luck with your plans!

Here's a few suggestions off of the top of my head: you could day trip to Ventura and then take the ferry to the Channel Islands for the day, or take the ferry out of Long Beach to Catalina for the night. Avalon is very family-friendly and picturesque. Also, flights to Monterey (CA) are not expensive these days. Lastly, you could take the train to a semi-local destination - perhaps the central coast/wine country. It's longer than 2 hours, but you'll be on the train so you can play and talk and relax. Good luck and keep us posted!

Maybe you should peek on 5401Olympic(http://5401Olympic.com). It offers a 2-storey house located at Historic Miracle Mile, Los Angeles. It has huge front grass lawn with benches that is perfectly for wedding reception with a built-in surveillance outside-inside for security purposes.

I guess it's too late, but even though you didn't really want a beach vacation, I'd recommend The Inn at Playa del Rey.
