Ideas for Picky 10 Month Old

I need help/ advice for 'meal' ideas for my almost 10 month old. He recently went from 4 bottles a day to three 8 oz bottles. He is getting 'bored' of baby food and will only eat prunes, squash and peaches. I am trying to give him more solid food, he loves cut up bananas, watermelon, vanilla yogurt and is addicted to puffs. I have tried cheese, mac and cheese, chicken, blueberries but he just spits them out and almost gags. I know I have to be patient and I have tried numerous times. Does anyone have ideas/ suggestions that have worked for them? I am a picky eater too so I think he takes after me!

What can I do next?

My son is not only picky but has the most unusual eating habits. He enjoys having a variety of different tastes at any given meal. So, I may have a can of cut up fruit, jello, a jar of diced carrots (he loves those) and perhaps some mashed potatoes. I would then let him choose each bite. Also, once he started eating table food he didn't like baby food anymore either, however, I found that he would eat the baby food if I dumped the jar out into a bowl and fed him from there. My doctor also said that if you decide to try him with spaghetti and sauce you could mix baby food in with the sauce. Have you tried instant oatmeal? My son loves the apples and cinnamon low sugar oatmeal. If all else fails he would eat that. Sugar free pudding provides a good source of calcium. Also, just to make sure my son was eating enough vegatables, I would buy V8 Fusion for him to drink. It provides a full serving of fruits and veggies in one cup. Infant vitamins is something also I give him everyday also. My son also loves canned beef stew over rice. If the can has large chunks of carrots, potatoes and meat you can always cut those up. Hope this helps and good luck!

First, keep trying to offer the foods he won't eat. Don't just assume he'll never eat them and give up! This will only cause you more headache way later down the road when you are fixing two different dinners every night, one for you and hubby and one just for son!!! What stage baby food are you giving him? He should be on 3 by now so you could make your on from what you eat every day. If you have chicken and green beans for dinner, cut some of the chicken up on small pieces and toss them in a blender with some green beans and their juice. Grind it up don't make it a smoothe!!!! See if he'll eat that!! My son didn't want anything to do with baby food when he was 10 months. If it even looked like a baby food jar at the table, he refused to eat it!

Good luck!!

PS, and don't increase his bottles either!! You'll only be filling the void with formula and not getting him on table food and preparing for whole milk in a few months.

Well you have gotten some great ideas- maybe this will help- again- don't stop with the foods he won't eat. keep on trying. My daughter won't eat meatvery well- but she loves crackers and bread. So we used to take meat, a veggie or two, and crackers and grind them into a pastry dough consistancy in the mini food processor (really cheap). then we would make the "dough" into marble size balls. My daughter loved it. Also pancakes work really well! you can put most any fruit into them. I also like smoothies for my little one. A little yogurt, formula, frozen fruit and a sneak of squash, zucchini, or some other mild flavored veggie. blend in a blender and serve in a straw cup or bottle with a large opening. Oh, and mine loves oatmeal- one of the best foods on earth and you can add soo much to it! good luck!

My daughter seemed to have the exact same likes and dislikes as your son when she was that age - she was very picky too (good news is that she has since grown out of that and she eats larger portions now finally!). Anyway, some things she liked were black beans and corn mixed together, also toast with cream cheese or butter, and nutrigrain bars or Sesame Street cereal bars. GOod luck!!!

Maybe its the consistency of the other foods he's denying that he doesn't like? Have you tried mixing things like banana and blueberries or some of the others? My baby is now 18 months and eats regular table food, he pretty much feeds himself now. But when he was on jar food he loved the ones that were mixed with other fruit. And its very normal for babies to reject foods. The key is to not offer the food for about a week and then offer it again. There will be some he starts to like and others may take awhile.I never liked popcorn, any kind, any form. That dislike lasted until I was 16 or so. I also didnt like any form of corn until I was around 5. Im not saying your baby will be that picky but tastebuds change and you just have to keep putting those foods out there until his become adjusted to them.

Well, I can tell you when I had WIC and my oldest now 7 was starting out on table food he was picky (and still is) the nurse at WIC told me a great stand by that always has many needed vitamins is cereal. She told me not to rush it and try to be creative..whatever that is with kids...so when all else would fail I gave him cereal he loved it still does. You might want to look into the Sneaky Chef I don't know if there are ideas you can use just yet but I know some of her ideas maybe helpful on up the line later..I haven't gotten her book yet but am asking for it for valentine's day instead of choc and flowers. Oh, I used to make pancakes with bananas mashed into them, pastas with a little sauce but I chopped them up fine. I made veggies in a pan cooked until very soft and then I'd break up little bites of bread into it and funny my kids would eat some of the strange things I'd make but I'd put effort into a dish and they wouldn't touch it at all. Best of luck finding something all kids are so different....
