Ideas for Odd Paint Color Choices

Hi Moms~

My sons (2 and 5) want their room painted. They have chosen brown and red. I picked up some samples and I think I can make it work, but I'm not very creative when it comes to paint. The room is plenty big for the darker colors, and has lots of natural light. There are 6 surfaces (due to a little 'nook' where the crib sits perfectly). Any ideas other than the standard 'opposite walls/opposite colors'?

Thanks
L.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback. They (I) chose "cup of joe" and "sundried tomato"...they really look nice together. The trim is already cream so I'll leave that. They currently have blue and yellow wide stripes so I'm not looking to do that again. I do like the stripe at the top idea, or the idea of just the nook in red. I have also thought of the squares in lighter/darker colors...I am leaning toward that. Oh yes...and my hubby is an electrician and a builder, we are well versed in paint, etc. We will use Behr, as always. I hate to offend, but while 'green' is great, lead-free latex paint is perfectly safe for interior walls after the initial period of drying and ventilating! :)

Hi L., I love the colors!! Good choices from you boys. You could paint on wall brown with red sponging with the boys can help do, and another wall red with brown sponging. I love mirrors in kids rooms and so do they. If you can IKEA has inexpensive mirror tiles that another wall could have. Play with the idea and see what the boys like. Good luck.

I'd use the brown everywhere but the nook. Painting the areas of architectural difference in red will make the room pop out and look interesting. If you do it opposite the red might overpower the room, as psychologically red raises your blood pressure, makes you hungry and agitated...that's why most fast food restaurants use it in their decor...get you in and out fast. ;)

Good luck, sounds like you'll have a great room when you're done!

It really depends on what shades they picked... Our living room has a cranberry red wall and 3 oakish brown walls and looks great...

Maybe do the trim and or stenciling in a creamish color to help the visual aspect of it...

Or put a bunch of time into it and make it a checker board design. :-) sometimes its the colors you wouldn't think go together that really pop in a room when together...

And don't be scared at first... The light will fade the colors a bit and they won't be so WOW!

Check out this website called voiceofcolor.com. It has a section called Vision at Glance which will allow you to color any room in your house with different colors so you can see what it will look like before you paint.

What if you did brown on all the major walls (especially if you could do a brown on the lighter side, almost a deep khaki), then accent with the red. Paint the nook all red and do red accessories.

You could do the nook in one color and the rest of the room in the other (because I know how hard it is to get red to cover evenly I would do the nook in red). The other option would be to paint the bottom half of the wall one color and the top half of the wall the other. The third thing that I have seen done is to paint one wall in one color and the rest of the walls in the other.

Hi L.,
Because they have picked dark colors that may take more than a few coats to get an even look I suggest picking 1 wall to accent that is painted the full color and choose a lighter color to cover the other three walls. I would also paint the nook the opposite color than the walls that surround it. You can also paint the darker color the lower portion of the remaining walls and add a border.
Good Luck!

it's great for you to give them the choice. i hope you claimed final say on the shades of the colors! ha ha.

how about doing the top 2-3 feet of the walls in red, with a lighter brown on the rest, or even a foot wide stripe around the room about 3/4 up? or, you could even do the brown all around, with red shapes, like large circles/squares scattered throughout the room. or, keep it neutral and get them red comforters?

L.; yes this can be very difficult but it can also be very fun, ive done a few things with color that turned out well, one is you can do a wainscoating thing where one color meets up the wall to the other color, instead of this wall this color and that wall that color, you can do all walls half like top half one color, bottom half another, or you can do a shape thing on the wall, i did a room with polka dots on it, in a contrasting color, but that more for a girls room, we did one wall with large dots that we drew around bowls i found around the house 7 diff sizes, and then painted in the circle with other color, turned out great, but you can use other shapes as well, like brown walls with red squares or triangles intermixed with each other on one large wall, or you can do a splatter effect, i did this with a white room, and then splattered the color they wanted in the middle of room all the way around, i used my hands to make the splatter, i dipped my fingertips in the paint and splattered them like at waist hight it formed like a border around the room, a white wall with brown and red splatters could be cool looking accented with sheets and pillows and blankets, you dont have to paint all the walls, you can accent white room in those colors, keep your splatter even all the way around, also in one of my boys room i made a large stripe but not your average sideways one like a border, i made a continuous stripe that went around the room but broken, like / on one wall, and connected that over the ceiling, and down the other wall \ like this angle, i broke it up some walls had partial lines through it, but it appeared that they connected it was a 1 foot stripe width went up on angles up one wall down another as if it were bounced off itself at the edge of wall, if you need more ideas or want to talk more about these feel free to contact me at ____@____.com thanks D. s

YOu could do red walls with brown trim and maybe some brown stencil or sponged design along the walls, or 1 brown wall and 3 red walls. You could do the nook a cozy brown and the rest red. Whatever you do, if they helped decide, they will love it!

When I painted the nursery in our house I couldn't decide between yellow or green. So, we went with both. I have green on the lower half of the walls, then a border, then on top are one foot stripes in yellow and green. I painted the closet one solid color inside - no sense putting all of the work into a closet that is going to be covered up with clothing!

I think someone else already said this, but it really depends on the color. Red is a really hard color to look good on the walls and usually requires mulitiple coats to cover and look good. You don't want to dominate the room with brown, especially if it's a dark brown. I would suggest throwing a cream in with it. You could paint all the walls a cream color and then just do big red and brown cirlces. You could also do cream and brown think strips with little red strips in between. Or there is a chairrail option and just do one have brown and the other red. You could also choose to do the nook red and the rest of the walls brown with a cream trim accent. Good luck!
