I Want to Get a New SUV

I will be in the market for a new car soon and I’m looking for a small SUV, preferably under $25K. I would like to ask your experience with the following, considering it will be a purchase that should last for the next 9-10 yrs:
• Subaru Forester
• Toyota RAV4
• Honda CRV
Have any of you owned any of these cars and how do you like it? What about gas consumption? I want something that has good mileage per gallon. I will have a car seat for my youngest and a booster for my oldest.
I currently have a minivan that I love, but its getting old and I want a smaller car so it’s not too expensive.
If you have any suggestions about something else, please let me know. I LOVE the looks of the Volkswagen Tiguan, but it seems to me that even the basic is pretty expensive.

What can I do next?

I don't have direct experience with the models you listed, but I wanted to suggest looking into one of the Ford models. We have a 2003 Expedition (I know that's bigger than what you want, but maybe the Explorer or Edge?), and it has nearly 200K miles on it. We have NEVER had a problem with it - never. That's a lot of miles to drive with zero issues. Also, it feels pretty good to be driving an American car, designed and built here, providing jobs to Americans. Just a thought! :) Happy car-buying!

My Mother has a Honda CRV and loves it! She has had NO problems with it, it is a newer model, 2010, I think?

I have no experience with the smaller SUV's, I am sorry. I have a large family and have a 2005 Chevy Suburban, it seats 9 and it was the FIRST brand new car we have ever bought and I am still in love with it 7 almost 8 years later!!

We still have/drive my 2002 Honda CR-V. I will say that the newer ones look much "cooler" though! :) For a small SUV, I think the mileage is great. My hubby actually drives the CR-V now (I get to drive the new Subaru Outback) so I don't know the exact number. We fit 2 convertible car seats in the back just fine. It's a little loud on the road noise, but not much more so than other SUVs. We considered getting another CR-V for our "new" car, but my husband wanted the "better" resale value on the Subaru....

Go for the CRV! A really reliable SUV. You can definitely get 9-10 years of use out of a Honda.

Do NOT get the Subaru. We had a real lemon of a Forester. It was constantly in the shop for one thing or another. A money pit.

I traded my 2007 CRV in last month for the 2012 because I love them that much. You can get one for under 25,000, mine was 28,000 but I wanted some bells and whistles.

The 2007 averaged 23 MPG the 2012 seems to be averaging 24 MPG.

I did not trade it in because of anything mechanical, my dad wanted to buy me a new car. Otherwise I would have ran it into the ground. I see no reason why it wouldn't have lasted another five years.

My husband has a Honda CRV and loves it - no problems at all (so far, it's a 2009) My friend just bought a Ford Escape. It's a cool little car, but I don't know anything about it.

We have owned 2 CR-Vs they are great. We have owned several hondas and have never had a problem out of any of them. You can easily get 200K miles out of them.

I had a Forester years ago. Bought it brand new (ordered it, actually). It was a 1999, 5 speed. I drove it until 2005, putting about 170,000 miles on it before trading it. No major issues. Really, pretty much routine maintenance and new tires. Near the end it started to get a bit of oil leakage, and I have heard that is not uncommon among Subarus. But, it was all wheel drive, and the gas mileage sounds like it was about the same as the CR-V's (from what I see posted here). I averaged around 24 mpg. Mostly in town driving.

It was extremely reliable and easy to maneuver. Good visibility. I'd own one again if it were just me in the car all the time. We moved up to something with more cabin space because with 4 of us (and the kids growing) it was getting kinda crampy on family vacations.

I have heard good things about the CR-V's, too, but I have not personally owned nor driven one. I have owned a couple of honda's, and they were good cars, but that was YEAAAARS ago.... before they even made CR-Vs, lol.

If AWD would be an asset to you where you live, then I think a Forester could be a good option.

I have a 2004 RAV4 and I LOVE it! We have a booster and car seat in it and it is a bit tight if the front seats are all the way back. The current models are larger than my model. I have only paid for routine maintenance...NO other repairs, which ismore than I can say for hubby's 2009 Chevy Traverse. Be sure to try the car seat and booster in whatever car you look at. That made our decision when we bought hubby's car. Good luck!
