I Need Suggestions for Lotions for My Daughters Bumpy (Chicken) Skin.

My 2 year old daughter has bumpy (chicken) skin on her arms and legs. She has had this since she was about 6 months old. I have been told by 2 different pediatricians that it is just dry skin. I have tried lots of lotions but it has not gotten better. And now that it is summer, sun screen seems to make it worse. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good lotion and/or sunscreen that might be better? Or any ideas of something else I might try.
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank everyone so much for the suggestions! Jill's comment on Keratosis Pilaris seems to be right on. It is a hereditary condition that can be treated with light exfoliation and lotion. Jordan definately inherited it from me. I had it on the back of my arms really bad when I was in high school. It has gotten better with age but has not gone away. There is a website I found helpforkp.com it has some great information. I don't know why, but it helps to put a name on it. I'll be sure to share it with my doctors that told me it was just "dry skin". Thank you again! :) S.

I have a beutiful 2 year old mini-me too, she also has chicken skin. She got it from me, way to go mom, give me everything good! What I have found works best in the winter is Lubriderm and in the summer, cocoa butter(it has to be butter, not lotion or cream, cocoa butter, butter). I have not found a sunscreen that doesn't aggravate it. You don't need a lot and put it on daily after baths, a little more for places where the bumps are worse, on my princess it is on the back of her arms.

I have the same problem...for years I was told I had dry skin, but then I learned of a disease called folliculitis. It's a minor infection of the hair follicle with the staph bacteria. It's not dangerous....it will sometimes clear with antibiotics...but not always, and will easily reappear. It's really nothing to stress over.

My little sister had the same problem..the doctor told us that she was allergic to PABA..(which is found in all sorts of items..especially suncreen) fyi..mushrooms even have PABA in them.. :)We had to read incredient lists on every product before we used it..on her "bad days" we would soak her in a bath with baby oil..She has since outgrown the worse of it..(she is now 23) but she still has to use PABA free products..
I hope this helps..

Hi there. I just have a small suggestion. Have you tried baby aveeno oatmeal baths? My son has awful eczema and the winter makes his skin worse so we do oatmeal baths and put Keri bath oil on his skin after. In the summer, we have found that the coppertone for kids spray sunscreen works well and doesn't irritate his condition. If he does flare up we start oatmeal baths again. Hope this helps.

This is called Kerotosis Polaris(may be mispelled but is close) We were told our granddaughter may out grow it. So do some don't. Her doctor did prescribe cream but can't remember the name. It didn't really help. She also said to exfoliate with a warm wet cloth. Just water no soap. I have even used a very soft brush on her arms and legs. We use dove soap for sensitive skin. No bubble bath etc. It really bothers me to see her little arms and legs covered with this as I am sure you are the same. I hate it when people ask in front of her(adults!) what is that on her arms. I don't want her to become self consious of this when she is older. You can email me ____@____.com Maybe you have found learned something you can pass on to me. thanks

My pediatrician told me to use aveeno scent free products. They have worked wonders! I would try to use the body soap as well as the lotions. She is old enough now where she could even use the regular aveeno products which would probably provide more moisture. Hope this helps.

My experience is that eczema in infancy is due to a food allergy, nothing else. I would take her to an allergy specialists for tests. Once you figure out what the culprit is, eliminating that from her diet should be all that's necessary. Since this has been a problem for your daughter since she was 6 months old (which is exactly when she was first introduced to solid foods I'd imagine), I would bet that this is your problem, and no cream or lotion will help as long as she continues to be exposed to the problem food.

Hi, my girls have the same thing. I've found that the Johnson's Naturals works well and is a little cheaper than Aveeno brand. As long as it doesn't seem to be itchy I wouldn't spend too much money on the more expensive treatments.

Both of my children have that skin, and no lotion helps. My pediatrician suggested using a scrubbie or loofah when bathing them, and it is starting to work. I also only use burts bees products on their skin that helps too.

After using the products that I'm going to tell you about, you may want to just dismiss what everyone else has told you because these products are guaranteed to work. My 2 year old DD has had eczema since she was 6 weeks old, but since using these products as needed or sometimes daily, she NEVER has an issue again.

1. Elidel - I used this on her when she was an infant and it completely cleared her patch of dry skin.

3. TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE CREAM - Her pediatrician gave me a prescription for this cream and it has worked WONDERS. I noticed that the thing I really didn't understand was that I would take her to Caucasian pediatricians and they would suggest I use the over the counter lotions that are commonly used for eczema. However, when I took my daughter to the African American pediatrician (Dr. Wilson), she immediately prescribed this cream and my daughter's skin has never been the same. IT'S GREAT!

4. Vaseline - I use plain old vaseline on her skin at night after I've given her a bath with Dove soap (I agree with another respondee). A lot of parents do not like to use Vaseline because it's very greasy, but it works! I've also been using Vaseline on my daughter since she was an infant and her skin is so beautiful. Some parents do not take the time out to really moisturize their children's skin, but by using a great moisturizer while they're still young, it really will yield great skin later on in life.

I know these tips will work for you. God Bless and get to it!

It kind of sounds like the beginning stages of eczema. I can't use any soaps or lotions with fragrances in them for my 2 kids, or their skin will get all bumpy like that too.

I use Burts' Bees soap, and Cetaphil cream.

Hope this helps!

Auquafor and hemp lotion will work wonders. Layer them put the auquafor on first then the hemp. The hemp traps the moisture in from the auquafor and helps sooth the skin and moisturize it.

My almost 3 year old daughter has had severe eczema since she was born. We went through so many lotions and prescriptions and nothing completely cleared it up. My pediatrician finally said to try Eucerin (the cream rather than the lotion). It is over the counter but has done wonders for her skin after only a few days. Good luck and hopefully some of these suggestions will help your daugher!

My daughter has very dry skin (including rough, bumpy patches) and our doctor prescribed Derma-Smoothe/FS. It really helps her skin and has the added bonus of smelling like lilacs. I don't know if it will help your little girl, but it might be worth a try :-) Good luck!

Hi! My 2 1/2 year old had a similar problem. The bumps started on his elbows and went up to his armpits. I first thought it was an allergic reaction to something because he had no fever and acted fine and so I stopped using dryer sheets, fabric softeners, and any other thing that was new in the house and it never went away. It actually got worse when it started to get slightly hotter outside. When I took him to his new pediatrician they said it was rash that he could have picked up anywhere. they prescribed me some BACTROBAN CREAM MUPIROCIN CALCIUM CREAM 2% - 30 GRAMS. Within 2 days I saw SUCH A DIFFERENCE!!! I used it for total 5 days and the rash is completely gone!!! Ask your doc about it and see if it's right for your little one. Hope this helps!!

My 2 year old has eczema also. Here are some things that have helped her- she hardly has outbreaks now.
- No fabric softener (if you have to use it because you get static build-up, use a "free and clear" kind. Method makes a good one that you can get at Target.
- For bath soap we sometimes use Dove. But I like to buy paraben-free products so I use California Baby Shampoo and Wash or Burts Bees Tear Free Shampoo and Wash. Try to avoid soaps with fragrances or with milk in them.
- Lotions: Cetaphil cream is great. Cetaphil lotion works well too, but the cream is better. And it's less greasy than Eucerin. The Aveeno lotions didn't work as well for my daughter, plus a lot of the Aveeno lotions contain parabens, which are a preservative that has estrogen-like effects on the body and they have been found in breast cancer tumors.
- Sunscreens: I tried every commercial brand last summer and they all caused my daughter to break out. I have been using Kids Sunscreen by Alba Botanicals (I can find this in the health section at my grocery store) and the Aveeno Continuous Spray Sunscreen on her this summer (neither has parabens). We've been out a lot in the sun already this summer and I've noticed that with the Alba she hasn't had any breakouts. With the Aveeno she just gets what looks like a little rash for a couple of hours.
- Limit the dairy. Dairy can aggravate eczema. So I avoid putting any products on my daughter that contain milk or buttermilk. She didn't have any dairy until she was about 16 months old, and now I try to keep her dairy to a minimum.

I hope you find some things that help you. My last bit of advice is this: don't try every tip you've received at one time (I know this from experience). It can be a relief to find all these helpful tips so you try them all hoping that something will work. But try one or two things at a time so you can actually see which ones work and which ones don't. Good luck.

I have 5 children and 3 of them have eczema. We use Johnsons Baby soap and lotion that has a light green lid and says, Moisturizes with aloe vera & vitamin E. Aveeno lotion works great too. Eucirin is expensive but works well also, I buy the store brand of this. On days your daughter stays inside you could do a no soap bath sometimes to give the skin a break from soap. Good Luck!

I also have Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin), and my son has this crazy skin condition too. I recently started using Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Body Creme...You can get it at Wal-Mart for around 7 dollars. I've noticed a big difference in the areas that aren't as badly affected, and a slight improvement in the really bad areas on the back of my arms. I've only used it for about a week and a half, but so far so good. It's really thick, and you don't need to use alot of it, but put it on everyday after bath time.
