I Need Help with My Daughter's Curly Hair

I have straight hair, so I am almost clueless when it comes to curly hair. My daughter's hair is full of curls. Everyday, I dread combing out her hair because it is always full of tangles, and she cries the whole time. I put detangler spray and leave-in conditioner in. What else can I do to ease the pain? Also, does anyone have any styling ideas? I am tired of the same old thing. She usually has a ponytail or three pigtails (with the back of the hair loose). Her sister's birthday party is this weekend, and I would like her hair to look nice. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!! TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went with Ouidad. It has helped her hair. I think one of the best ideas though it combing the hair while she is still in the tub. I leave some of the conditioner in, and it combs through a lot easier. Thanks for all of the ideas!

I have natural curly hair, 1st thing: DON'T comb hair, it makes it frizzy! when it's wet, "comb" through it with your fingers. add products for curly hair, like mousse w/no alcohol, the best is Dove it leaves the hair soft not hard and sticky. if you wash her hair daily then this is gentle for her hair. also, Finesse for curly hair mousse is great too, it's soft never hard or sticky.
Pantene has great products for curly hair too. Leave in conditioners work the best to keep hair from getting frizzy, again never comb or brush her hair it makes it worse to manage.
as for styles, you don't mention the length of her hair. I would suggest a headband, be sure it doesn't have a lot of "teeth" because it might get tangled in her hair and hurt once removed. Use those little tiny clips, usually come in flower, or heart shapes and pull hair from sides and top crown area while wet and clip in the center of head, when dry the hair will fall in place and frame her face with her lovely curls.

I have curly hair and so does my daughter. I have to wet it every morning. I use a spray in gel that is made for curly hair. I have also found a wonderful product called Biosilk. You can get in any hair salon. Ir is not cheep but it is worth the money. it comes with shampoo, conditioner, and a serum that you leave in to calm the friz and makes it very easy to comb through. My daughter is very tender headed and this has been great.
I try to braid her hair at night and sometimes during the day. I also like to twist her hair. I pick up the sides like a 1/2 ponytail and twist it tightly from the front to the back. It is cute to part it in the middle or on the side and then twist it. I also love to do dog ears or 2 french braids. Headbands work good also, but I have found if you leave it all down that it tangles easier. Another good thing I have found is to wash it in the tub using a removable shower head. My daughter's hair is very thick and I could not get all of the soap out, so this was a great cure to that. I hope this helps.

my daughter has the same type of hair! full of ringlets! the first thing i can suggest is to get it trimmed often, i've noticed that my daughter's hair gets split ends very easily, i guess from getting tangled, and split ends make it even harder to manage.
also, wetting her hair thoroughly before brushing should help, and also using a very wide-tooth comb instead of a brush.
as for styling ideas, i found that pigtails (either pony tails or braids) work really well. also, if you are good at french-braiding that can work well too. i also use a kind-of half-pigtail, where i use only the top half of her hair for 2 braids or pony tails. i can't think of anything else right now, but i hope this helped!

My mom is a curly (like ringlettes) haired woman. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend "Curly Girl" by Lorainne Massey. It breaks curly down in to three different types, teaches all about care, cutting, and styling for curly hair. I am very wavy, and still found it very helpful. It even has a special section for ethnic curls. Always brush the hair from the ends up, holding the hair in your fingers before the scalp , so the pull doesn't hurt the head. Try a larger tooth comb, it is easier to pick the curls into shape and take the knots out, than to try to brush it smooth. I don't recommend a thick brush, like boar bristle style. A couple braids over the head with the loose curls at the end are always cute. Good luck.

I have very curly hair as my brother and my youngest. The 1st advice i have for you is don't use a brush, it will make it hard to brush plus it will frizz. Use a wide comb or your fingers and crunch it to style and Never blow dry as well cause it will frizz and make it hard manage.

Good Luck and i hope this helps.

There's this stuff on the market called Curly Pudding. Google it and see what you think. It was created by 2 biracial girls who's mother couldn't control their wonderfully curly hair. They loved to go visit their grandmother because they knew she'd give them a wonderful style using her curly pudding recipe. Now they have marketed the stuff and are doing well with it. I haven't tried it but if you do, let me know how it works.

My daughter has curly hair. We use Infusium. That seems to take out the frizz and make it more managable. My daughter doens't like her hair up so we bought her the thicker headbands. She really loves them.

I have really curly hair and so does my 6 year old son. Mine used to be ringlets but has gotten straighter with each time I was pregnant. My son's is still in ringlets, btw he LOVES it!!! And is lucky!
We both condition our hair and let it sit for 5 minutes. I have never used a brush on his hair. And only use one on mine when I straiten it. Then it is a 3 inch round and a hairdryer. I don't need a flat iron or a curling iron. We use a comb in the shower under water but then fingers after that. We both use Pantene leave in conditioner, and Zero Frizz Hair Serum, both are in Wal Mart and not expensive. Only a dime size amount for him and a quarter size amount for me. We both have thick hair. You will want to play with how much you use. Not too much it will weigh it and dull it. You only want to get the ends so it doesn't frizz. My mom always used headbands. One of my friends uses clips that have the metal part covered in fabric so the don't slip. You can probably google that. The store is near the Hulen Mall.
Good Luck!!

My oldest DD has super curly hair. I don't wash it every day. When I do I'm condition it too but with my condition b/c the ones made for children just don't work. I use Pantene's for curly hair and Frizz control.
I either give her a half up half down with the the hair to one side in a little pony tail or a full pony tail. I have also let her hair down with just a headband. When we do have somewhere to go- church, parties or the such] I spray a little gel in her hair or use mousse.
Now my hair would be the same way but every day I put it into a bun and at nite when and if I go out it looks great b/c it's wavy and many people are always you have such great hair. It's a lot of work yet I won't want to change it.
BTW My 4 y/o has super curly and my 3y/o has super straight... just think it's funny!!

I also have very curly hair. I use a shampoo and conditioner called Curls Rock. It comes in blue bottles and you can only buy it in salons. I love it. I also use the biosilk. You need to comb it while it is wet and I also use a spray right after washing it. The spray is called thermasilk and I buy it at wal-mart. The Curls Rock shampoo and conditioner is a little expensive but it is worth it to me. Hope this helps and good luck. S.

Both my little girls inherited their daddy's fabuous curls. He taught me that we have to condition it and comb it while the water is running on it in the tub. There was a time I thought I'd have to cut all her hair off because it became so narly in the back I couldn't even see through it. So we brush it everyday with tons of detangler and when we wash it we run the water down her hair as we comb it with conditioner in it. Good luck. Also you may want to check on chemicals in adult conditioners which may be not so healthy for kids. Lots of conversations out there on that issue. I try to use Pureology because it tends to have more natural ingredients. Many of the kids conditioners don't work, I agree.

H.,

My daughter has curly hair also. What we do is get a spray bottle and dampen her hair with water. That's makes it a bit easier to comb out. I personally don't use a detangler, but that's just my preference- the water seems to do the trick. She's pretty tender headed, so I try to be gentle.

Style wise, you may try using barretts for something different.

Good Luck.

My daughter has curly hair also and we use Johnson's shampoo for curly hair and I put some shine, like biosilk, in it and it makes it easier to brush out the tangles and it looks silky and shiny when dry. I also put gel in it when we go out. She's still a baby though and ,although she has a pretty good thickness to her hair, it is short. It just hasn't grown past her collar yet. When she sleeps on it it gets really ratty and tangled. We always laugh because her hair looks like an old ladies hairstyle when they try to rat it to make it look thicker to cover the bald spots. One of my friends has a son with really curly hair also and there is something by suave that she swears by. I haven't checked it out yet, but it's inexpensive and worth a shot. good luck

I have curly hair, but it's much looser (more on the wavy side) so I don't have to use a detangler. I have found http://www.naturallycurly.com to be a great resource. They have product reviews and lots of advice. They also have a site for kids - http://curlykids.com/. There are lots of tips and articles on that site.

You may want to try shampooing her hair less frequently. I condition daily but only shampoo about once every three days. It really helps my curls.

The best advice I can give you is find someone who knows how to cut and care for curly hair. It makes so much of a difference. I found someone using the salon reviews on the Naturally Curly site. They have reviews on the kids' site, as well.

Good luck - curly hair is wonderful, but it's definitely a challenge somedays! :)

Hi H.,

My daughter has very long waivy hair and every night before she goes to bed I dry her hair and comb it out and put it in a braid. In the morning it's very easy to comb out. You can also try putting a little conditioner on her hair after shampooing it and you can use a detangling comb. It looks like a comb but it's larger and has very wide teeth spaces. Or you can brush her hair with a brush that has 100% boar bristles when her hair is wet NOT when it's dry because she will have a great big poof. Always brush from the bottom up. These are some tips that work for me. Hope they work for you too. Sorry no styling ideas, I'm in the same boat on that one.

I have curly hair and my 2 year old daughter does too. It is a chore! I spary her hair down with a water bottle in the morning and comb it with a wide tooth comb. The trick is to hold the hair closer to the root while combing so it doesn't pull and hurt so bad. Not to say that she doesn't scream during the process but I do know it doesn't hurt her as much. I use Ouidad Kids products(www.ouidad.com)shampoo conditioner and spray gel on her hair.
Sorry, I have no styling tips, I usually leave it down. But, I do have to suggest making sure the person that cuts her hair knows how to handle curly hair. From my personal experience, if they don't understand curly hair they will completely ruin curly hair!
Good luck!

I have curly hair and love it! I wish my daughter had gotten my curls. The trick to curls hair is not to brush it. While in the bath use lots of conditioner and run your fingers up under the hair to isolate where the tangles are, then use your fingers to detangle starting at the end and work your way up. Most will untangle as soon as you touch them. Leave the conditioner in while you wash bodies and face and then rinse it out last so it has a little while to penetrate. I love the pantene for curls. After the bath while hair is still wet, put a golf ball amount of mouse in hair and comb it through with your fingers. Touch the hair as little as possible to minimize friz. If she has enough hair, put it in a scrunchie at night to limit tangles. Good luck.
