I would like to start working on getting my son potty trained. I have heard that there are books on potty training in just a few days. Does anyone have any experience with these methods? Any success? I am pregnant and due at the end of November. I would like to have my son out of diapers by the time I return to work after this pregnancy.

So What Happened?

Well I went out and bought a potty. I did not get any of the books because all of the reviews on the internet were mostly terrible. I have been working with him and now he is telling me when he has to go "poo poo". When he does, I put him on the potty and he goes. Great so far but "pee pee" is way futher down the road.

I have 3 boys and I was told by so many moms not to start until they were 3. I listened to them and have never had one problem with it. It took 2-3 days and was over! They say that their body is not really 100% ready until they are 3!!!

Just a suggestion! Good luck

I highly recommend the Amer Acad of Pediatrics Potty Training book (you can get the name on their website and order it from amazon.com, etc). It is a great guide on how to watch for readiness signs, step by step instructions, etc. We also read ptrng children's books to our kids and watched Big Bear in the House video about potty training to stir the natural interest.

We began the process by letting the kids use the potty before bathtime, when they woke up, etc to get some success. After that, we just encouraged them and used a sticker rewards chart (sticker for sitting, sticker for trying, 2 stickers for peeing, etc) with an exciting prize at the end for completing the chart and being potty trained. With all that said, both of mine had interest starting at 18 mos so we "trained" off and on, but when they were truly physically ready, they were trained for day, naps and night in a couple of days. (we also never used pull-ups, just naked and underwear for the training days). Both my son and daughter were trained before 2 and a half.

Good Luck!

We all would like our kids to be out of diapers sooner than it happends. BUT, the reality is that your child will potty train when he is ready. If you force the issue, this might turn around and do the opposite that you had intended.Usually, not all the time, boys potty train after 2. Maturity levels etc are involved.

I second the post from Annie - my son, now four, resisted early attempts and then mastered the potty in about two days on his own timetable, when he was almost three. We still use diapers at night, although he hasn't had an accident in months and we're planning to eliminate them when we finish the current pack. There are lots of books and systems, but in my admittedly limited experience and what I've heard from friends, the best solution is to make them aware of the potty and wait until they're ready. We talked about it all the time, but we didn't force it, and as I said, when he was ready, he made the adjustment pretty seamlessly. No public accidents, for example.

Both my Aunt and my cousin have had their boys potty trained in 3 days. What they did was have them sit backwards on the toilet seat so they were straddling the seat and looking at the back of the toilet. My Aunt said her son would say as soon as he got on there "all done" so she told him to talk to Mr Peter maybe he wasn't done after all. He looked down and said you have to go Mr Peter? And then he started going. Took three days and he was in underwear exclusively. Now my cousin is trying it because she has been having difficulties and so far she has had good luck with having him sit backwards. I guess it is when they sit backwards they don't have the pressure of us staring at them waiting for them to go. Sitting backwards they don't see much and just go. Good luck with it. I know what you mean to want to have one out before the other comes. It is expensive to have two kids in diapers

I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Potty-Train-Your-Child-Just/dp/0743...

I would read it first and then decide if your son is ready. Boys statistically take longer before they are ready to train - mine waited until he was very nearly 4 before he was really ready for it, but each child is different too. We took a two-day weekend and made a big production out of it with all the reinforcement, although we didn't do the final "party" per se - we just continued stretching out more small "gifts" until a final gift when he'd been dry for a long enough time without accidents.

Good luck!

Everyone I know who has tried to potty train their little boys ended up having to wait until he was around three. Good luck! I'll be in your shoes before long.

Hello V.,

Well to be honest I don't remember the name of the booklet that I read, but it claimed to potty train my child in only 3 days and it worked. My son was a little over 2 years old when I started to potty train him. He was able to do it in 2 days. You do have to foucus your time to your child for those 2-3 days. You will have to take them to the potty every 30 minutes so be prpared for that. A friend of mine let me read the book b/c she tried it on her son and it also worked for him (PT in 2 days). This book is written by a woman and the reason I call it a booklet is b/c it is about 15 pages long and it repeats alot of the same things over and over again..but it really did help.

Good luck and Congrats on the pregnancy!!
