I Need a Pediatrician to Listen!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting--

I live in Redondo Beach and am looking for a new Pediatrician. My 11 week old daughter is great most of the time. She sleeps for seven to eight hours a night, eats well, and loves to laugh and play. About every two weeks, she will lose her mind for about a week. She is in obvious pain and screams a high pitch scream for 10-20 minutes at a time throughout the day, lasting about 5-7 days. I truly believe it is gas or cramping because she will be crying and tooting the whole time as well as straining and pulling her knees into her chest, even though she poops fine. I thought she may have been lactose intolerant so I put her on soy and there is no difference. I have been to the Ped three times for help (in addition to countless calls to the office and after hours care) and now they have her on Axid, Mylecon (sp?), and prune juice and Tylenol as needed. I keep telling the Ped that she does not have reflux, and mylecon doesn't work. I also don't like the prune juice. I am just told to do the usual --hold her for 30 mins after feeding, bicycle legs, propped mattress, ect.. All of this is not working and the Ped is not listening, and actually called her a "difficult baby". Now I am upset and confused. I would appreciate it if anyone has some insight into this situation and/or who can vouch for a Ped in the area (Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, Torrance).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the postings. I appreciate your words. Just a little update-- I took our daughter to the Ped and expressed my frustration (kindly) about what she said and how she is kind of putting us off and that we felt that we should see a specialist. The Ped was receptive and examined our baby and then admitted that the baby does indeed have extraordinary gas but she wouldn't know what specialist to refer us to. She suggested Nutramigen formula (hypoallergenic) and for her to remain on the reflux med. I must say that I still feel like something is missing here so I called the GI Doc that was recommended on one of the postings and made an appointment on my own (thank you Kim M.!)--just to be safe. Thank you!

P.,

My son had intense acid reflux as an infant and we did not know it. For two months, he would pull his knees up and cry himself to sleep. The best Doctor to start with is Eric McCloud in Torrance. He is a Gastro Pediactric Doctor and can quickly find if that is the challenge. At five months, my son ended up with liquid Prevacid which saved his life. I still work with him on some stomach challenges but he doesn't have the pain like he did after seeing Dr. McCloud.

His number is: ###-###-####. Call him right away and ask to talk to him first. He will listen and then tell you the next step!

Hope that helps...K.

Ask the pediatrician for a complete blood workup. If you little one has alergies to preservatives or some sort of additive, most will show up on these tests. Tell your Pediatrician that you are not going to give your child a medication that has nothing to do with her symptoms and if he can not find out what is actually going on then you need to find a specialist. This is harder than it sounds, but be vigilant. It took me 2 year to get a Pediatrician to acknowledge the fact that it was not normal for my son to have patches of skin turn blue. I ended up looking for a specialist on the web and took my son right away. It took that doctor less than a minute to tell my that my son had a blood clotting disorder and that he was lucky I had not listened to all the other doctors.
Too many doctors these days get kickbacks from the pharemsutical companies for perscribing their medications. It has made them lazy and unwilling to do their job to the fullest.
I will pray for the health of your little one.
Be strong

Dr. Nancy Blumstein in Culver City-we have taken my son there and he is 11 months old. We have not given him any immunizations and Dr. Blumstein works with us on that. Her approach is holistic as well as medical. She is very good and I highly recommend her.

Commonly, if pediatricians are unfamiliar with symptoms, they just give some suggestions and go on to the next patient. It took me a year and a half of going from doctor to doctor to finally have one take me seriously about my 1 and a half year old's eyes. Finally when she was three, the doctor I was at said he did not see the symptoms I was describing, but he knew enough to trust a mother's instincts. So, he gave me a referral to a pediatric opthemologist. The pediatric opthemologist could tell right away that without glasses she was nearly blind. All I can suggest is that you ask a pediatrician (which is basically your regular family practice level physician) for an appropriate referral rather than a solution.

P.,
What you are experiencing is very normal for a baby the age of your daughter. Rest assured any baby that sleeps 7 to 8 hours a night is NOT a difficult baby. What I found with my kids was that about every five of six weeks they would change schedules a bit and at about 12 weeks is common for caulic (sp), from what I understand is a maturing of the digestive system. My guess is that the prune juice has really not given her any relief.

What helped with my children was to put into practice the SSSH method; swaddle, swing, the shhh noise(what they hear in the womb) and suckle. I then would lay them across my knees tummy down and bounce gently and sway back and forth.

Hang in there. My children are now 15 and 11 and believe it or not doing great. I hope these suggestions help.

Because of all of the gas, I was wondering what kind of bottle you are using. Have you tried the Dr. Brown's bottle?
If you haven't, I highly recommend you try it. I truly believe that is what worked for my daughter. It might relieve some of the gas. Just a thought!

She could have a milk allergy-very few children are lactose intolerant, i's the protein that bothers them. About 40% of children who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy! Try a hypo allergenic formula such as Nutramagen sold at grocery stores. There are also Rxformulas like Elecare Plus. It worked great for us. Mylecon doesn't do much. Are you sure she doesn't have reflux? Sometimes being stopped up can cause it. Why do you think she doesn't have it? Anyway, I'd ask to see a Pediatric GI or get another doc who will listen to you. You know if your baby is in pain, and your doctor should listen to you! Trust your instinct! My brother gave me some great advice, which was to camp out in the doctors office until we got help. OK, not litterally, but you get the idea. Don't let them tell you it's normal, it's not and your baby shouldn't have to be in pain. Good luck! E.
