I Just Spilled Coffee...

...all over my desk, very forcefully. Knocked the (large) mug over, and it went everywhere. In the keyboard, under the computer (we have a horizontal model), down into the desk drawers, all over my pants, the carpet, everywhere. Also, I have a glass top on the wood desk, with very precious photos underneath (of course, ones that were taken before I had a digital camera, so there is no backup copy)...pictures of my oldest when she was a baby. The coffee went under the glass (don't even know how) and got all the photos stained.

So, I've been spending the last hour cleaning, and I think the computer is okay (fingers crossed), but my bigger concern is this photographs because they are irreplacable. Anyone have any experience with spilling stuff on photos?

Really, I am just griping. I am so mad at myself, because I am the mother who gets mad when people spill because, as I always say, it's a matter of being careful and not careless. I am always so careful, I NEVER spill...is this just retribution? ARGH!!! I am so mad at myself!

And I'm pretty sure the carpet will be fine after I shampoo it, but the pants...any suggestions? Too big a stain to treat with a spray, I think.

What can I do next?

I would take a soft cloth and carefully pat the pictures dry then I would leave them in safe place to sit for a few days to completely dry.
For the pants, I would use ( Tide with color safe bleach ).

I have to say, I'm 33 and I spill stuff often.
It bothers me when my husband yells at me when I spill something because I know that when it happens it was an accident.
I have never done it on purpose.

So please go easy on yourself and your children and know that it was not done on purpose and its not the end of the world. It can be cleaned up.

I really do hope your pictures come out ok.

As far as the pic's...worse comes to worse...you can take them to a restoration company. They have the ability to restore after floods and hurricanes....it's not cheap, but not all is lost.

Sorry you spilled....you are like me...I will be the first one to say "never" and then "boom"!!!!

Look online to see about the photos. If you don't find anything gently wipe what you can off. They can possibly be scanned and photoshopped to remove the stain. Pants might need a soak with white vinegar...sort of depends on the care instructions. Another thing to google....hoping your computer is holding out!

For the photographs - I would call Kinko's. They deal with all sorts of photos. That would be my best bet at this time of night.
For the pants, I would use Basic L and Nature Bright. These are products by the Shaklee Corporation. I am a distributor, and very particular about my delicate colors and materials... e.g. - light pink moreno sweater (left on top shelf in laundry room and rust from pipes dripped on it and dried on it .
I put Basic L and a little Nature Bright in a bowl with cool water, agitated the water slightly 3x/day and after the 3rd day the stain was completely gone. I did not evern remember exactly where the stain was. I did the same with my husband's light yellow Nautical sweatshirt....it too, came clean. These products are so safe!

Good Luck....Good Night. (I know how you feel....but the keyboard might be a goner) (Be kind to yourself - you're the best Mom they've got!)

Hi, definitely pat down the pictures. Once they are dry go to a photo shop like Rite Aide or Duane Reades. I managed to get some old photos of my great grandmother, great aunts etc, duplicated and they came out looking great. I gave the copies to my aunt who had been wanting them. They might not come out as clear as the originals, but it's close.

DO NOT WIPE the pics! You could scratch the emulsion & lose some of the image! As long as you can see the image (even with stains) they can always be scanned & restored...and the prices are going down on this all the time since it is becoming easier to do!

DO NOT let them dry under the glass; the pics will stick to the glass. It is almost impossible to remove pics once stuck to glass (although I have done it successfully a few times).

If you do pat them, just be careful to not wipe/scratch! The best thing to do would be to get any standing coffee off of them & let them air dry. Then the stains can be dealt with.

I've worked at a photo lab/portrait studio/custom framing store for 15 years & have dealt with it a lot!

Good luck!
