I just found a gray hair on my 10 year old!. Has anyone else expericed this?
Just a note...When she was younger we were concerned that maybe her body wasnt absorbing vitamins/minerals correctly since her hair is very dense. Not sure it the two have anything to do with each other.

What can I do next?

I think vitamin deficiencies might have more to do with hair loss rather than hair color change. Does either you or her father have a family history of going gray early? That will be your best indication.

My brother developed a tiny gray patch on the back left side of his head around that age (and by tiny, I mean no bigger than the size of a dime). He's had it ever since (and he's now in his 30s). His hair is blonde, so the patch was never very noticeable unless you were looking for it. And he never had any health problems. Sometimes I think our hairs just come out a little crazy - could be stress or diet or even environment related.

I've had a grey spot since about that age - it's like a big highlight... with no other problems. If he suddenly starts GOING Grey - I'd take him to the dermatologist, but one grey hair - or even a small (less than a quarter sized) patch is probably nothing to worry about.

I had some gray hair as a child and then starting going really gray in my early 20's. I think (not 100% sure) it is genetic. My dad has a few sisters that were totally gray in their 20's as well.
All I can say is, "thank goodness for hair dye"!

I read recently that scientists think they know why we get gray hair. It's because there is a build-up of hydrogen peroxide in our body. The body usually processes the hydrogen peroxide into something else, but when that part fails, a build-up occurs. Thus the graying of the hair.

Kimberly,

I had a few gray hairs when I was a child, my mom always told me I had a set of gray hairs like a small bunch if you will. I dont think it ever had anything to do with lack of vitamins, I was healthy as a horse.
