In the last few days my son ( he is 10months) has started screaming for what appears to be no reason. It is happening either right before or after he goes to bed/takes a nap. Last night he was asleep for about an hour and than he began to scream in the most awful way. We ran into his room & he was just sitting in the middle of his crib screaming. I picked him up and tried to calm him but nothing worked. It took more than an hour to calm him down ( which isnt like him at all) the same thing this morning, he woke up at 445 ( which is a good hour earlier than usual) screaming the same awful way. He hasnt had a fever or been sick, he doesnt appear to be hurt and I dont know if hes scared of something. His twin sister doesnt seem to be bothered by anything in their room I have checked for bugs or anything in his crib but cant find anything, I did add an extra nightlight to their room in case it was too dark.
He is teething, but he didnt scream like this when his first 2 teeth came in. I have called the Pediatricians office and Im waiting to hear from them. Any ideas on what could be going on or what I can do to get the screaming to stop? All the usual stuff like holding him, feeding, changing, running water havent helped.

What can I do next?

Hmmm, has he ever had problems with reflux? The only times mine screamed like that were when they had reflux problems- one of the 4 had silent reflux.
Have you tried Advil or Tylenol in case it is teething? Maybe something about these particular teeth are causing him more pain? Or maybe several are trying to come out?
Sorry, wish I had more ideas. Hope he feels better soon!

First have him checked out by your pediatrician - it could be an ear infection or a sinus infection. While you are there, ask about night terrors. You can read about it here: http://www.babycenter.com/0_night-terrors_142.bc

My first son had night terrors from about 9-18 months and then they went away. He would be unconsolable but not for an hour - only about 15 minutes, although it felt like 15 days. Otherwise, continue to comfort him as best you can. It might be a "phase" where it lasts a few days and then ends.

Good luck! C.

My guess is either teething or ear infection.

My ped always used to say that because babies are so busy during the day they don't feel the pain of ears or teeth. But once settled, they suddenly feel it because they aren't busy anymore and because they are laying down.

I wonder if he has an ear infection. He can have no other symptoms (fever) and be in a ton of pain from the pressure on the ears when he lays down. I would get him intot he doc today and have him checked out. Our kids have had a TON of ear infections and they were MISERABLE.

I would have him checked for ear infection. I had two wonderful sleepers, and any time their sleep schedule was disrupted, ear infection was ALWAYS the culprit.

Could be night terrors. Could also be teething. Even if his first two didn't cause this strong a reaction doesn't mean the next ones won't.

i bet it is an ear inection. teething could also cause this. You have a pediatrician appointment so make sure you check his ears for infections and fluid.

I too vote ear infection or an allergy of sorts, you are starting solids, yes? I wonder if you have introduced something new that may not be agreeing with your little one but sissy has no issues with.

Could it be night terrors? They often occur about 1-2 hours after going to bed, and can occur several times in a sleep session.

They are often due to poor sleep hygeine. Is he going to bed at the usual scheduled times? They can also occur as a reaction to a stressor, like a move or change in day care. Finally, they run in families as well -- there is a genetic predispositon for them.

Usually, no intervention will stop the terror once it stops...the only things that help are evaluation for stressors and ensuring that you practice good sleeping habits.

Hi - Sounds like night terrors to me, but it would be good to rule out an ear infection or other medical issue. If it's night terrors, sometimes they are due to being over-tired. Could you put him to bed a little earlier? That always helped with my daughter.

Maybe he's having a bad dream (as opposed to night terrors). If he has an ear infection, he could also be having a pain when taking a bottle or drinking from a sippy cup. The sucking action would be painful. Good luck. Mysteries like this are hard.
