Buy movie tickets and put in a basket or something with candy and bag of chips/ pretzels/popcorn. Or... Just give movie tickets.
My family made the decision not to exchange gifts this year. It gave me the false sense that I didn't have any gift shopping to do this year. However I swore I would not be shown up this year by my husbands business partner's wife. She is so sweat and for the last two year in a row has bought the cutes JP's for my daughters. Then I find myself scrambling because i forget to give them something. As a mom of little ones, I left my husband's business affairs and gift giving up to him. But in this situation I needed to step up. Its not that i have not thought of it, or that i'm out of time for the season. But, tonight is their business christmas party and here I am again, without a gift. I don't want to copy her gift idea, and her kids are older. I don't want to show up without a gift for them because there is no way she forgot. I'm so lame! Help me come up with something. Her kids are middle school age (8 and 12 ?). All I can think of is a restaurant gift card. Oh help me, someone have a better Idea than that? Oh I hate myself.
movie tickets is a great idea. I think i"ll do it at the Cinopolis which is high end theater with reclining chairs!

Think family game night. Make a basket - or a wooden chest (you an buy at a craft store in a pinch - buy games like Pictionary, Apples to Apples, Would You Rather. Then include a cute bowl with microwave popcorn packets, some popcorn spice (at the grocery store next near the chips & popcorn), maybe a family-friendly comedy DVD, and soda glasses. You should be able to get it all in one trip to Target or WalMart.
My kids are 13 and 16 and it's a treat to be able to have everyone home on family night and play silly games like Pictionary. We laugh alot and still kid eachother about some really bad drawings.
BTW - don't think of youself as a failure - it's just a gift and not one of the big things in life!
I buy a lot of Godiva chocolates this time of year and I will pair some chocoloates with a gift card, ITunes, etc.
At ages 8 and 12, movie tickets with snacks is good too.
We have a goumet popcorn place that has really cool tins as well.. favirite sports teams, college teams, etc.
For couples, we give a nice bottle of wine.
Good luck.
I would totally do a family gift that they can enjoy together. NewYorkMetromom's description is exactly what I would do. Put in a little gift card that says something like "May this season and the New Year bring your family many hours of laughs and wonderful family memories!"
Have fun at the party!!
Can't go wrong with boxes of fancy See's chocolates! What kid wouldn't want to get a whole box of chocolates to themselves for the holiday? If the mom is a Sugar Nazi then I'm out of ideas. When it comes to other peoples kids who I don't know very well, it's either candy or cash. Both are always well received.
Any chance they have iPods? How about some Apple gift cards?
iTunes gift cards are great, too!!
I would go with iTunes gift cards. Those are always a hit with my older kids. They don't even have iPods but you can still use them to download music to a PC, buy apps, etc.
