Both me and my 2 year son were just found out we have hypothyroidism. We both are on medication. Has anyone gone through this with their child. With him being So young it is a wait and she how he does on the meds. He is in the 10% for weight and height. Did your child have a growth spurt after he was on the medication? Just trying to get some support on this. Thanks for ary recommendations!

I have to disagree with the "natural" approach. You are risking possible anemia and heart problems by not getting proper treatment. Hypothyroidism is different for a child than for an adult. He may outgrow the condition by the time he is 3, or he may be on meds for a long time. But they need to get his levels figured out right away and I would not "monkey around" with "alternative" medicine! Especially if you trust your doctor. Just my input.

Hypothyroidism is easy to heal with diet/nutrition, medications shouldn't really be needed. You just make sure that you aren't being exposed to fluoride, chlorine, and bromine [which interfere with iodine uptake] or too much raw cruciferous veggies [which can also block iodine metabolism] and get sufficient iodine and selenium in your diet. Sea kelp and spirulina can supply the natural iodine and selenium. Natural sea salt can also help, it's better than the refined iodized salt because it gives you a full spectrum of trace minerals rather than an overdose of sodium. It's better to treat the causes of a problem than to be trying to cover up or compensate with a medication. Doctors generally aren't taught to treat causes because their industry is intertwined with the pharmaceutical industry and depends on continually medicating people for illness - not on making people healthy and self-sufficient. If a suppressed thyroid is causing stunted growth then fixing that issue will possibly trigger a spurt of growth to catch up.

Go to a natural/alternative doctor. They can definitely help cases for someone so young. My husband is an acupuncturist and has treated many thyroid conditions.

Good luck.

Wow! That must be really hard. I have hypothyroidism but, as far as I know, my daughter doesn't. I actually became hypothyroid after my daughter was born and that first year was really rough while my doctor was trying to get my medication right. Sorry I don't have any info or advice to give you about your son. How do you give you son his medication? My daughter is 5 and I can't even get her to swallow a pill so I can't imagine getting a 2 year old to swallow one.

It’s odd that your child would be underweight with hypothyroidism since the disease (which I have) causes weight gain. Hyperthyroidism is usually characterized by underweight. I wouldn’t try any “holistic” approaches with this. It’s a hormone imbalance and cannot be cured by “diet and exercise”. I’d follow the doctor’s orders and just monitor you child (and have follow-up blood tests to make sure the dosage of thyroxin is adequate). Best wishes with this.

I have it and we recently found out that my daughter also has it. She is 6 years old. Her level is at a 5 right now and we have talked to 4 dr's and they won't treat her until her level is at a 10. Which really makes me mad because I don't want it to get that bad. But, the only symptoms she has is hair loss and she is tired a lot and she has a hard time going to sleep. She has always been off the charts for height and her weight was off the charts but is now around 70%. She is very tall and skinny, lol! I hope you and your son feel better soon
