Hey Ladies! I know that there's an answer out there from all of you! I am currently 12 weeks pregnant, and am a preparedness type of person. I am very interested in learing how to hypnobirth. We were going to do this with our first child, however the classes were just beginning right around our due date. Definitly was not enough time to feel prepared. I tried to see if the hospitals offerred this again, but none of them around us seem to (Providence RI). I have checked out the classes, but they seem really expensive and crammed into a short amount of time. Any advice on books that anyone has learned from or classess that I may have overlooked around here? Thanks Everyone!

Hi, I took a Hypnobirthing class with Rita Quinn from Little Compton (____@____.com) to prepare for my son's birth. She didn't mind traveling to Northern RI for the delivery. We met in E. Greenwich for our classes. I can't tell you how much the hypnobirthing helped me through the early labor. Unfortunately, when we got to the hospital, he was breach, so it was a CSection for me. Two years later I took a refresher Hypnobirthing class with Ann Nashekian (sp?) from Attleboro, Massachusetts. I can't find her # or e-mail. Sorry. Both women are GREAT! I highly recommend having your teacher as a doula if you can afford it. I didn't and my husband wasn't the greatest coach during my daughter's birth. The nurses in the delivery room with my daughter thought it was amazing. Child birth was a bit uncomfortable, but I never felt like I had to scream because of the discomfort. When my daughter was born she was actually cooing at the nurses while they were delivering my placenta. I can't say enough how great Hypnobirthing was. I still use the breathing techniques to relax and fall asleep. Good luck!!!
Hi M.-
My daughter was born in March and I took hypnobirthing classes to prepare. I went to Allison Spooner- she is based by Brown in Providence. If you google Birthright in RI you will go to her website. I believe we took five 3 hour long classes over 5 weeks and it cost around $300. Some insurance plans will cover the classes. My birth experience was very good- I listened to the Hypnobirthing cd's during my 9 hours of labor and zoned out through the whole thing. The last hour and a half of "pushing" was harder, but I didn't need any drugs- just a few tylenol. It wasn't the idyllic experience that is shown in the videos you watch in class, but if you want a natural childbirth I think it is worth it. My husband thought it was very "hippie" but he agreed with the philosophy behind the techniques. Email me if you would like more information about the classes we took with Allison.

I know Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket has hypnobirthing as one of its options. I didn't do it but had my second child there. Its a GREAT place to give birth, small and personal with exceptional staff. Check it out.
