I am 99% positive that my husband has sleep apnea. He snores throughout the night and I can hear when he starts breathing again. He is constantly tired, always napping. problem is he refuses to see a dr. I was wondering if I could get a c-pap maching without a dr's. help?
I am in desperate need of sleep and I am very concerned for his health.

What can I do next?

Sleep apnea is a dangerous thing...even leathal. maybe do some research for him about the problems it causes if untreated. I was with my husband for about 7 years before he went in to have it diagnosed. I slept just as terrible because he was so loud and annoying. When my husband got tested he was off the charts....when he brought home his machine i cried...it has changed his life: better sleep for both of us, he is more rested and less crabby, and it has a lot of health benefits.

URGE him to go...the results might be very surprising to him.

Why don't you have him try the Breath-Right strips first? They are cheap & easy and help a lot of people who snore.

Hi J..
(This is my first time on MamaSource!)
My husband went to MN Lung in Burnsville. I think he saw Dr Corson- might be misspelled though? Initially he was reluctant. Then my Dad started to use a CPAP. I suppose it was more acceptable b/c his very manly father-in-law was using one. :) My Dad feels so much better with the CPAP that he bought (out of pocket) a very expensive cordless charging system to take with on camping trips. :)
I just set up the appointment and told him he had to go b/c I was worried about him. He went in for an overnight sleep study. He was dx w/ sleep apnea. He is now on the CPAP every night. He is a graduate student and working. I know that he wouldn't be able to keep up without the full night sleep.
(Also, just for information), ADHD symptoms can appear when one has sleep apnea.)
Hope that you can convince him to go in.
Salaam, S.

my hubby snores real bad, minus apnea. he did go thru sleep study and everything. no apnea...but he demanded they give him c-pap because i was going to strangle him! they thought he was crazy because the whole thing is expensive. you can order them on line i believe, but you may need a prescription from a doctor. with real apnea, it is a health issue. hubby should see doctor. tell him to do it just to rule things out... or to make you happy. but it is very costly.... so perhaps it is not possible..

My husband has sleep apnea and you may be able to get a machine without a dr order (ebay craigslist, etc) HOWEVER, the pressure needs to be set to the person. It can be too high or not high enough. My husband has had to have his adjusted and had to go through sleep studies every time. I would STRONGLY recommend not doing it on your own.

I'm with you here, my husband snores so loud that my daughter is always asking me how I can sleep with him. He just resently went to a sleep study and his doctor agreed that he snores and stops breathing, but he suggested for him to lose weight, (he's NOT over weight) and to sleep on his side. (he snores on his side too.) so needless to say I'm still not getting any sleep. I don't think you can get a c-pap machine unless you can find somebody who wants to sell theirs, I'd check ebay or your local newspaper for one.
